Never heard of him before but that was really good! How can he chat and play at the same time!? Gonna have to get me one!
I cannot underemphasise how much this clip fills me with enthusiasm when I am losing interest in playing bass. Such a lovely, infectiously charming and accomplished bass player

Yep, I do indeed have one on my old German flat back and it's a very neat solution. Plus Roger (aka Bassace) is one of BC's true gentlemen so this ones highly recommended by me

The only major currency that has weakened against sterling in the past year is the Yen. So Japanese instruments should be coming down in price quite appreciably. MIJ or CIJ Fenders should be opening up a big gap in terms of affordability vs US made. Also Japanese manufacturers such as Ibanez should be getting cheaper.

Annoying sound - and not just my playing ( hopefully !)

Not SE London but would South London be close enough? If you can get to Clapham, Laurence Dixon is excellent, details here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/194067-contact-details-for-excellent-london-based-db-luthier-laurence-dixon/page__p__1899529__hl__laurence%20dixon__fromsearch__1#entry1899529 -
Marc bought a Takamine B10 bass from me. All went very smoothly. Good communications, prompt payment and Marc is now the happy owner of a beautiful instrument. Recommended
It's all down to ability and a healthy dollop of luck.
It also depends what type of music you are wanting to play - clearly playing complex jazz or prog rock (for example) is going to require more work and technical ability than pumping out 16th root notes a la Ramones. What I will say is there is no substitute for playing with other musicians. All the bedroom practice in the world will not take you half as far as developing empathy with a bunch of like-minded musicians. My advice is to find other people as soon as poss and you will get better much quicker than you think and much quicker than playing on your own

I recently got me one of these (as a very light alternative to my now-sold Takamine B10) and I am now the owner of this lovely 1970/1 Precision (hope Gareth/walbassist doesn't mind me using his pic, its better than I could do!) which now has original pots and P-Retro removed

There's an audio clip in post 19 of the TB thread in my OP which sounds much better than the video clip. Oh and here's a second thread which has feedback from people using the mic, all of which are positive! http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f4/troll-ribbon-mic-931425/

Anyone else coming along, other than Pete (PTB) and Mrs PTB? -
A guy on TalkBass called Brandon Essex has started up a new line of ribbon mics (Troll, as it lives under the bridge!) which he claims are more feedback-resistant and better sounding than current alternatives (DPA etc). The first few feedback reports have been very positive from users. Here's a vid demo'ing the mic - sounds good to me, although I would worry about the volume of my band being too much for this mic. Thought you DB'ers might be interested in this new alternative. I emailed Brandon and he told me its $325 plus shipping - it does need a signal-enhancing preamp (Fethead, another $100) or an amp with DB functionality (eg, Acoustic Image) PS, here's the thread on TB http://www.talkbass....rophone-920907/

I have read on TalkBass that Realists have a definite life, whereby the pressure of the bridge foot on the piezo element eventually leads to lower output and sound issues. Maybe yours has unfortunately run into this at a much earlier stage than is usual (most people seem to think that Realuists have at at least a few years before the sound deteriorates in the threads I have read). If so, a new pickup has to be the sensible option if you have a long string of dates coming up, at least as a backup. Maybe look for a wing piezo (eg Underwood, Shadow, BassMax) so you have the choice?

Always liked the look of this and fretless Ricks sound excellent, eg this dude playing some jazz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7ivOkt6Ya4 -
I am frustrated as (1) I am not very proficient (2) I wish I was motivated to practice to get better (instead of sit on internet ...) and (3) even when I have tried to understand theory (like whats Aeolian, Dorian etc?) I forget the whole lot a week or two later. All of the above means I am very much a root-5th-octave type player with an inferiority complex when I see a cracking bass player! That apart I absolutely love playing live with my band and am proud of the recordings we have done

My contribution is "Topplue, Votter & Skjerf" (hat, coat and scarf) by the ECM jazz trio of Terje Rypdal (guitars), Miroslav Vitous (double bass) and Jack de Johnette (drums). Shut your eyes and you will be on a boat floating across a misty Norwegian fjord. Honestly! The double bass solo at 1:29 is just sheer beauty to me
