If I recall correctly, BC'er Mr_Bassman (aka Keith) tried one of these a couple of years ago and was deeply unimpressed. I've not seen mention of one on BC since. Maybe a bridge wing piezo - BassMax or Shadow 950 - would be a good simple quick-on/quick-off solution, coupled with a suitable preamp (PlatPro or Headway)? Alternatively the Ehrlund contact microphone is the one getting all the rave reviews at the moment on TalkBass (and from some BC'ers) but it does require a bit of playing around to find the 'sweet spot' on any given bass.

Fantastic, Lozz! It will indeed be great to see a BCer on the box

Hi all, I love the Spiro Weich strings on my basses but I am intrigued by the number of people that swap out the Weich 'E' string for a Mittel 'E'. I do notice a slight loss of volume on the 'E' so I fancy trying out a Mittel. So does anyone have a spare Mittel 'E' (from the 3/4 set, the 3885s) they fancy selling? Would have to be in good condition with little/no fraying of the silks as I am a bit OCD and my Weichs are all immaculate!

As a long time DB player you *may* prefer a Precision (ie, chunkier width) neck to a skinnier Jazz, but I could be wrong here. At your price point I personally would pay about £400 for a Japanese (CIJ or MIJ) Fender Precision or save some quids and go with a Classic Vibe or 60s Squier, like this one for example (which has the advantage of a passive/active P-retro preamp for a wider variety of tones) http://basschat.co.uk/topic/189672-reduced-squier-cv-60s-precision-with-john-east-p-retro/page__st__20__p__1906286__hl__precision__fromsearch__1#entry1906286

Dave bought a DB pickup off me. All tickety-boo and seamless, like our last deals ATB Clarky

Hi Luigi, thats a very beautiful bass. In all honesty, for £5,000 any buyer is going to want a bit more information. Can you recall the name of the luthier or where you bought it. I guess it cost you a lot of money even 15+ years ago so do you have a receipt? It may be that you need a professional valuation given its uncertain provenance. None of this is to detract from what is a lovely looking bass and my sincere hope that you manage to sell this - I'm just trying to be helpful

I bought my David Gage Realist pickup off the forum a few months back (I recall its a couple of years old but in good condition with all packaging and installation details) but I have decided I prefer the more thumping sound of a BassMax on my Kolstein bass. To optimise the pickup, I bought the matching Realist 'padded' (ie, attenuated) cable from the US for about £35 including import tax http://www.davidgage...products_id=491 - this makes the output of the pickup less hot so the Realist can be used with any preamp (eg, Headway; without the cable it distorts easily - discussion here: http://www.talkbass....d-cable-779739/) I would like £95 for the pair posted. Not willing to split, sorry.

Thanks! I also just realised (doh!) that if I play at the end of the fingerboard its one inch closer to the bridge than my 3/4 flatback (as fingerboard is same length) and of course the closer to the bridge the higher the tension. I guess a combination of that plus break angle is why it actually feels slightly higher tension with my plucking hand than on my 3/4 bass.
Can be to do with the angle over the bridge also
Good point, plus the after-length is shorter on the Kolstein accentuating the break angle. I have no intention to change the strings, I was just a bit confused as to why they felt rather different to the identical set on my 3/4 bass

I think this only just arrived in the UK a couple of weeks ago Keith. Mark at BassDirect has just listed it in his amp section so maybe ask him? Apologies for dumb question here but I assume that for any given set of DB strings they should have lower tension when installed on a bass with a shorter speaking length (bridge to nut)? I have Spiro Weich 3/4 3885s on my 3/4 flatback (41") and on my Kolstein Busetto (40") yet for some reason they feel easier on the hands (softer, requiring less left hand strength to depress) on my bigger bass. Admittedly the Spiros have only been on my Kolstein a week - whereas the ones on my flatback have been on 4-6 weeks - but I assumed they would feel significantly less tense on the smaller bass? Or have I got my logic the wrong way round, not for the first time!
Clarky: I liked the look of the Crazy 88, but wasn't sure if it had enough oomph for what I need. I'm really really interested in Mike's new cab, The Big E MA45 but the 'buy' button on Big E's website isn't working and there's no contact info for Mike Arnopol on Talkbass. Out of interest, did it take a long time/lot of effort to get your Crazy 88 over from the USA?
I have the Crazy8, which has the single 8"driver. I'm under no illusions it won't be loud enough for big gigs but I thought it would a neat, ultra-small/light cab for rehearsals and smaller gigs (most of ours have PA assistance anyway). I suspect the 2x8" Crazy88 option would cover a lot more ground but it was more pricey and lost the ultra-small advantage as far as I was concerned. I actually contacted Mike Arnopol directly via PM on TalkBass and the turnaround time was just over 2 months from order to getting it through my door (including importing from US and having to pay duty to get it released etc). Here is his profile so you can contact him if you want to go the way of one of his cabs http://www.talkbass....ber.php?u=51339
Have you used your new cab in anger yet?
nope, I had to DI at our last gig as stage was size of a small rug (the Green Note in Camden; nice little venue, mind) and there are six of us in the band. As a result I've only played the cab at home and all I can usefully say is that at home-friendly volumes it sounds very transparent and a very good match with my Acoustic Image amp. Whether its any better in a live situation than say the Wizzy 12" I used to own remains to be tested
I would have thought that a Compact would be better at reproducing the full range of a DB than a Midget.
Most of the technical speaker discussions on TalkBass' DB forum suggest that smaller speaker sizes are better at conveying DB tones. The trendy cabs du jour are carrying 6" and 8" speakers while the Audiokinesis Thunderchild 12" also gets loads of good reviews. 15" cabs don't seem to get any support FWIW
