Oasis - Whats The Story Morning Glory Album
Clarky replied to Hobbayne's topic in General Discussion
To my mind, 'Definitely maybe' at the time was a breath of fresh, attitude-driven air - the nearest thing to 'Never Mind The Bollocks' I had heard in years. Furthermore there were some very melodic, memorable tracks that still stand the test of time (Live Forever, Slide Away etc). While most fans revere it, I already thought the rot set in with 'Morning Glory' (can't stand their 'epic' Champagne Supernova for example and I hate Noel's nasal voice on 'Don't look back in anger', Liam's voice is waaaaayy better). Bass lines were always a bit meh because they were totally secondary and Noel was in charge (I recall he used to tell Guigsy which bass he could use based purely on image). -
Spiro Solo 3/4 3886 strings * SOLD *
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUBs & Double Basses For Sale
For those wondering about downtuning Spiro Solos to orchestral (ie, standard EADG tuning) the following shows that this lowers the tension to below Spiro Weichs (3885). This puts them broadly in the same ultra-low tension ball park as, say, Innovation Silver Slaps Comparative Tensions of Different Sets of Spirocores, If Each Were Installed on a 3/4 106 cm (41.73 inches) Mensure Bass at Orchestra Pitch (all in pounds)
G D A E Total S42 4/4 Light 55.2 59.3 61.4 63.4 239.3 S42 4/4 Medium 61.4 65.8 69.6 69.6 266.4 S42 4/4 Heavy 73.7 73.7 75.8 77.8 301.0 4/4 Solo @ 3/4 Orch 55.3 55.3 55.3 56.9 222.8 3/4 Solo @ 3/4 Orch 56.0 57.8 57.8 57.8 229.4 3885 3/4 Light 60.6 61.7 63.9 66.1 252.3 3885 3/4 Medium 67.2 68.3 70.5 72.8 278.8
-

While most audiences wouldn't know one bass from another surely the answer is it depends on the audience, the band/genre and the amplification? A bluegrass audience won't thank you for a growly buzzy bass sound like Danny Thompson while a folk band would probably not be too wild on a thuddy, gut-like sound etc etc. But in general I think you are right, especially once a double bass is amplified

Hi, after another bout of experimenting I have found the strings for me: Spiro Weich 3/4 3885. Have these on both my basses and they suit my playing 'style' (or lack of), and the sound in my head. On the way to this point I have been through loads of strings. Here is a low-tension set that I like but just not as much as my Weichs Spiro Solo 3/4 3886, which I downtuned to orchestral for low tension - very good condition, barring a little fuzzing, notably on E peg-end silk. On my bass for a couple of weeks only. £75 posted as opposed to new price of £123 at Thomann and £138 from UK retailer Stringmail

Well, the Danny prototypes settled down and became a bit more growly, still not as much as Spiros. Getting over my hero worship, the fact is I prefer the slightly lower tension and woody growl of my Spiro Weichs. So I just swapped back and I am happy now. Sold to another BCer

Hi Bassgalaxy, I am only aware of two Kolsteins in the UK. My removable-necked version (which I am most definitely not selling) and BC'er bassace's (he bought a fixed-neck Busetto from me a couple of months back). I do think these are the most beautiful travel basses available but there are other 'bass-looking' (as opposed to EUB-looking) alternatives, eg, Eminence - you could try BC'er Mr_Bassman as he owns a removable-necked one and has listed it for sale/trade on his signature. Here's his BC home page http://basschat.co.uk/user/143-mr-bassman/

Afraid I don't do arco so I'm the wrong person to ask. The guy I got them from said they are better for arco than Spiro Mittels, if that helps (at least a little bit)

I managed to get hold of a set of prototypes. First impressions are I like the tension of the D and G - slightly higher than my Spiro Weichs and with more volume. They will cut through nicely I think, I am a bit surprised the E and A are not very growly though as I associate that lovely buzzy growl with Danny's sound. Right now to be honest I prefer the Spiro E and A. That said these strings have only been on my bass less than 24 hours so I need to let them settle. If things don't change much, though, I can see me ending up with a half and half set of Spiro E/A and 'Danny' D/G or maybe just the Spiro E

Roberto sold me a set of double bass strings. Well packed, posted fast, can't ask for more. Happy to be the first to contribute to his feedback thread

Good shout, amazing bass line, played immaculately

Was a very good gig at Bush Hall too. S'how I feel about my band's last couple of gigs (Half Moon, Green Note) - great to end the year on a high and with the promise of an even better 2013 in prospect* * musically and for you Nige personally now that Diane's on the road to recovery

Best kit for an 'acoustic/unplugged' set?
Clarky replied to Low End Bee's topic in General Discussion
Ad, PM me your address and I'll stick an old set of black nylons in the post to you and a rubber pick. I have never had to re-cut the nut of my Precisions or Jazzes, swapping to/from black nylons, so you could change your strings in 5 minutes, ie, you could easily swap back from these to back-up steel roundwounds for noisy gigs in no time at all -

Re amp, I am sure if you only have a few gigs, Jack or i could lend you something appropriate (eg, he has my old Phil Jones Briefcase combo) rather than you spend moolah. However if you wanted to do so, you just need something relatively uncoloured and un-gnarly. There's some very cheap gear on BC that would fit the bill (eg, Deaver has a GK 200MB combo for just over £200 with gigbag, which used to be mainstay of travelling DB players) -

Good point OHM, black nylon flats sound most acoustic-y to my ears, more so than regular flats. Rotosound TruBass for example (listen to Come Together by Beatles and you'll get the low/mid warm sound these produce) -

Acoustic basses are generally a bit rubbish amplified unless you get a high-end one with a sophisticated preamp (my Takamine is the dogs but cost me a pretty penny). I would have thought some flats on your Precision would be an acceptable low-cost approach, along with careful EQing (mainly cut highs). Fretless would add a bit of buzz/mwah type action but I don't see that as Jetsonic stylee. -
Thomann does Spiros for £116 but point taken on Evahs

They've been working on them since about 2009, according to a quick google, so i guess there's a lot of developmental costs to cover. Still I think that price point could prove problematic, even though there's tons of us Danny fans around

Hey Nige, can't make it I'm afraid but hope its a blast!

Last gig of 2012 for us at the Green Note in Camden. Its an "intimate" venue but has a great atmosphere and is well known on the folk circuit. Six of us fitted on a teeny stage, helped by our drummer bringing a dramatically stripped down kit and me playing my Takamine acoustic bass, rather than the full-blown DB. Given the venue and its normal clientele we played our more acoustic-y/folk-y numbers and we got a great reception. Plus we actually got paid a decent amount for a change (which is nice). A very good way to sign off for this year

Contacted Bass Centre again today and they said they await the packaging 'any day' and that the RRP will be a fairly hefty £145

Thursday night. Bit sad its our last one of 2012. But then, its 2013 soon and lots more gigs to come, yay! Including the fantastic Hootenanny in January and the Half Moon in March
