1. All the bands I have been in since my return to bass playing in my 40s have had strong points - my death metal band got me out there gigging and understanding musicianship and the quirks of playing live and recording, my punk band was closer to music I enjoy and we had a few great gigs (sadly too many with virtually no audience), and Rattlin Bone got me into double bass and playing festivals (I got on well with several members as well, although it went pear-shaped in the end for me). However, All The Queens Ravens is a different proposition. All the other band members are younger than me, all are very talented, there's no inflated egos, and when the incredible lady singers are at the top of their game (which is nearly all of the time) the music is sublime. We don't meet up socially that much but when we do we all get on as -while we are a mix of very different personalities - everyone is pretty easy going. I do think I have struck it very lucky with this band and - although I am way less competent on double bass than their previous classically-trained bassist - I bring tons of commitment and the occasional much-needed kick up the @rse to get things done. I hope sincerely that this is the start of a long running association as I am truly enjoying myself with this band.
2. Yep, me again Keith just bought some DB strings from me and put me in touch with a buyer for another set of strings I had. A true gent
3. Although he hasn't posted (yet!) on BC, Dave is a good friend of our very own Mr_Bassman (Keith) and a fellow double bass player. Anyhow, Dave just bought a set of DB strings off me and all went swimmingly I know DB strings are sometimes a bit hit-and-miss on any given instrument but hopefully they are exactly what you need Dave!
4.

"pumping a sperm whale" was Nigel's creative description of his unhappy attempt to play double bass at one of your get-togethers, Jack It does not allude to any unusual nocturnal aquatic proclivities that I may (or may not) like to indulge in
5. Setting aside double basses: Fender Precision x 12 Fender Jazz x 7 Fender-alikes x 2 Alembics x 4 Warwick x 4 Wal x 3 Rickenbacker x 3 Alleva-Coppolo x 2 Takamine x 2 Ibanez x 1 ESP x 1 Eko x 1 Aria x 1 Ashbory x 1 Thats 44 I can think of, of which I have one P, two J's (one a fretless) and my Takamine acoustic left
6. Bought a nice amp from Michael. Well packed, as described, functions perfectly. All good Cheers!
7. Loz, you're selling this over one of your fancy dan Alembic collection? Blimey, there's no accounting for taste
8. Is it really only 4% of sellers make a donation? I tend to make donations randomly, when I remember, rather than sale-related. I guess others do similarly which would mean the 4% figure is understated in reality. Nevertheless its very low!
9. Just to be clear regarding the interest I mentioned above, this amp is still available
10. I bought these strings a week ago as I have been experimenting with strings for my Kolstein travel bass. As solo strings, they are normally tuned A/E/B/F# but are often used by Latin bass players (and by Miroslav Vitous) down-tuned to the standard E/A/D/G as they become quite low tension (similar to Silver Slaps; see tension chart below). After initially feeling great, they loosened up and settled down and I find they are actually a bit too low tension for me (not helped by the fact the Kolstein travel bass has a relatively short scale length of 40", nealry 2" shorter than my full 3/4 flatback bass). I have replaced them with a set of Spiro Weich strings which seem to fit the Kolstein's shorter scale length rather better. So here is a set of strings that cost £138 last week at Stringmail (link below) and are in vgc (very minor fuzzing of silks at peg end - the unavoidable minor fuzzing that comes from installing once). FS at £95 or - preferably - trade for an equally very good condition set of Spiro 3/4 Weich http://www.stringmail.co.uk/dbass.htm Spirocore tension chart: http://www.talkbass....os-sets-724598/
11. A couple of BCers have already expressed a potential interest here chaps and I'm waiting to hear back. But for the record, its 40cm wide by 34cm deep by 9cm high and I am guessing it weighs just under 20 pounds (similar to the iamp800). In terms of provenance for "the white face" or UK-iamp500s, Ashdown made a run of 100 of these amps for EA around 1995 I believe but it turned out Ashdown were not making money on the deal, hence that was the lot - meaning these are pretty rare beasts. As for the fans they are very unobtrusive, unlike say a Mesa Walkabout which sounds like a wind tunnel when played at home volumes!
12. Also listed in amps section but favoured by some double bass players. Bit too many EQ controls for me and a little on the large size compared to my usual micro amp fare! £270 posted for 500W of quality tone
13. Pics from previous seller (sure he won't mind):
14. Bought a few weeks ago on the forum, one of the rare Euphonic Audio "white face" iamp500s that were briefly made for EA by Ashdown in the 1990s. Its in very good condition (just missing one adhesive rubber foot which I'm sure is easy to replace for pennies) and in perfect working condition. I bought it due to its excellent reputation as a 'doubling' amp (for DB and electric) but its basically over-specced for me in the EQ department and a bit big for a wuss who has grown used to micro amps! Looking for £270 posted, which is what I paid Here is the previous sale thread with a link to photos - it looks identical as it hasn't left my house since I took ownership http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1
15. A double bass is bigger than a Precision, that is what I meant. So what were you thinking, Silvia?
16. There's a BC thread abut them, lovely looking basses http://basschat.co.uk/topic/112080-xylem-basses-guitars-build-progress/
17.
Mine's a large one.
Mine's bigger
18. There's a load of threads about pickups eg this one http://basschat.co.uk/topic/190082-double-bass-pickups/ I like the Full Circle and Realist best of the ones I have tried but neither is cheap (unless you find one s/h) and the FC (which has the reputation of being very feedback resistant compared to other piezo pickups) requires fitting into an adjustable bridge. The cheap and cheerful choice is a BassMax or Shadow/Underwood. The latest favorite of many on TalkBass and some BCers (eg, thisnameistaken) though is the Ehrlund contact pickup. Thats up there in FC territory price-wise but if it works on your bass it apparently sounds fantastically natural.
19. I read that guy's comments too (think it was in one of my threads on TB). Strikes me as rather dodgy as you run the risk of damaging the core, especially if its a thin filament of wire or other such breakable material.
20. Takamine B10 or TB10 comes close: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKEtECsF8To For a more traditional solid body, I would say a Fender J or P plucked over the end of the neck with black nylon tape strings (TruBass or La Bella's)
