Hey Chris, no these are polished nickel flats with purple silks. The blurb says "FLATS authentic in every way. Constructed over a round core for increased flexibility and lower tension, the RB FLATS are wound with a pure nickel flat wire, which is then polished to a high shine, resulting in a string that is both supple and comfortable to play. With the RB FLATS, Optima have created a flat wound bass string which echo’s the classic tones of yesteryear."

When some BCers say they're not much cop at bass.....

Being the bassist in a band requires so much more than ability on the instrument - enthusiasm, learning parts for rehearsals, practice before gigs, maintaining communication with band mates, turning up on time reliably etc. I am a very basic, untechnical bass player but pretty good at the other stuff.- 166 replies

Having read up how accurate these German made strings are to the flatwounds that were standard issue on 4000/4001 models in the 1960/70s, I bought a couple of sets. Unfortunately the tension is a bit too high for my knackered left hand (its definitely more tense than TI flats, which I previously used, and feels more like a 'standard' flatwound such as a Chrome or La Bella 45-105). The gauges are 45-57-77-100. One set is brand new and unopened in the packet, the other has been on my bass for two days and the ends were trimmed for use on my Ric (note: on removing, some of the silk immediately fell off the tuner end of the G string, grrr, though its 100% usable). A Strings is the cheapest UK-based retailer and sells at £47.99 per set. So how about £40 30 posted for the brand new set and £30 posted for the briefly used set?

In general I have had good experiences with BD and I will continue to use them. I did have one major beef which was them mis-weighing a bass. I have a glass back and weight is important to me (even more so now, after busting 13 ribs plus shoulder/sternum/left hand in a horse accident in March). The bass I bought (a Ric) was heavier than advertised and I ended up having to sell on eBay for my usual loss. They do now weigh basses individually and I am prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Not cheap either, £45 on Amazon!

FYI, the Rick standard strings are nickel rounds and have an unusual set of gauges with 45,55,75,105

I wondered the same. A quick google turned this up

^^^^ my latest band (goth/post punk) has been a breath of fresh air after playing blues rock/Americana (mainly), hiphop/funk and cowpunk in last five years

Reviving this thread with my recently acquired 1973 4000-to-4001 conversion. Loads of mods (tuners, bridge, bezel, controls and extra pickup) but loving it - even the crudely carved "Crue" in the body! Nice slim neck and ultra low tension TI strings to suit my knackered left hand.

Don met me at a typically BC strange place, under the watchful gaze of Holly Willoughby's security guard, to buy my JMJ Mustang. The whole deal was transacted smoothly and in a thoroughly friendly manner. Can't wish for more than that! Enjoy the bass, Don!

I felt very similarly during lockdown and again after May 2022, when my main band went on an extended hiatus for various health/other reasons (not me, for clarity). I have reinvigorated myself - and started buying/selling basses again, haha - by joining a band from a different genre that I am used to (goth/post punk) but which I have fond memories of from my youth. Found them on "Joinmyband" website. Maybe a short break is in order and then check out the 'musician wanted' sites and try something a little different, Andy?
