I was reading about SC and his upright playing and came across this article. Turns out that to amplify his upright he uses an Underwood pickup through a full-blown Ampeg SVT rig, which is certainly not a standard choice for the DB community! Sounds like a recipe for feedback to me but who am I to argue with the man! Http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/Issue/2011/Aug/Stanley_Clarke_A_Bass_Man_and_His_Upright_Desires.aspx?Page=4

I use the Hercules stand and like it a lot. It runs the risk that if someone/something knocks the back of the bass it could fall forwards. However unless you have tearaway kids or a pet llama this is pretty unlikely. It has teh major advantage that its more stylish looking than many stands so it has the (all important) Mrs C seal of approval too

First winter with a carved bass... Advice?
Clarky replied to thisnameistaken's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Hmmm, hadn't occurred to me and i am in a similar boat. Maybe keep the bass in its padded case so it has its own micro-climate and is protected from the direct effect of chilly drafts? That said, the fact there are a ton of 100+ year old basses around does suggest that they are pretty hardy. -

Replacing a Silver Slap G with something slightly brighter
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Had a quick play on the bass before leaving for work and - having retuned (as Silver Slaps stretch a lot in the first few days IME) - the G sounds slightly better to my ears. Maybe its the stretching/settling phase that is causing it to sound dull as there seems to be a small amount of sustain this morning. Perhaps I was a bit hasty in my initial conclusion and I should leave it a few more days before properly passing judgment? -
Replacing a Silver Slap G with something slightly brighter
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Nice one Daf that's very kind. I have a gut feeling (awful pun ) that a slightly higher tension Super Silver might well do the trick. I am fairly sure it's down to the peculiarities of the smallKolstein body and not a duff G but this will give me the chance to rule that out. Great stuff -
Hey Daf, I have just put a brand new set of Silver Slaps on my Kolstein travel bass (which has a downsized body). The E/A/D have the usual thump and a reasonable amount of sustain, albeit lacking a little in volume (hardly surprising, given less air being moved). However, the G is really very lifeless, just a dull 'thunk' with virtually no sustain. I reckon its down to the bass' downsized body rather than a faulty string. So I wondered if there is a single Innovation G string from one of the other lines (possibly Super Silver, 140SB, 140B???) that could be fitted in place to give a little more of a singing, sustaining quality without sounding tonally completely different from the E/A/D (or ratcheting up the tension massively)? Cheers Clarky

Update from me: I tried for hours to get a good sound with the Ehrlund on my old German flatback and it simply wouldn't work, no matter what I did with putty, p/u placement, air gap etc. I decided to throw in the towel and Daf very kindly let me return the pickup for a refund. Please don't let my experience put you off, however, as the vast majority of Ehrlund users (witness those eulogising on the TalkBass thread) seem very happy - and furthermore it worked on my (mainly non-gigging) Kolstein. Just sod's law for me I suppose that my gigging bass is an awkward old b*gger! Despite its shortcomings I will be sticking with the Full Circle on that bass.

Gipsy jazz giant, Louis Vola flouting the 'rules' on DB technique
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Try as I might, I keep playing towards the neck when not concentrating on my right hand technique. In that sense, these Louis Vola vids make me feel better about my 'non standard' playing technique. Its a habit i want to shake though. Photos from last gig (taken by BC's own Bluejay) show what I mean.
PS Clarky, the photos and vids from last Weds are here waiting for you
Fab, thanks Silvia. I'll be going to PTB's gig on Friday so can I get the DVD/vids then, please?

[sub]I play at that level but I noticed on a vid the other day that Chris Minh Doky plays with the nut around the top of his head level. Not sure if that would help or hinder in regards to the previous posts? [/sub]

Last week we (All The Queens Ravens) played a late-notice, mid-evening set at the famous Half Moon in Putney and we went down so well that they asked us to headline there on 14th November (set time 10.15-11pm). It will be cool to headline at a venue that has been trodden by the Rolling Stones, The Who, U2, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison .. and of course The Jetsonics! Now I'm all embarrassed! Very kind words folks but I would like to point out a few things: 1. I have been in receipt of many favours since joining BassChat, ranging from supportive comments when my wife was badly injured through to loans of equipment (eg, Nige/silddx kindly lent me a lovely and I suspect quite valuable Spanish guitar only last week for a recording session) and - last but not least - being on the receiving end of people's time and advice, which you can't put a price on but is perhaps the most valuable thing of all. In short, do unto others is my motto (aka karma) and I firmly believe many of the good people of BC would also have helped out a fellow bass player. 2. On a windy day I resemble Boris Johnson, which is not a good thing 3. I like to pull kittens' tails Actually 3 is not true (I have two cats). The moral of this is ... yay for BassChat!

Hi, me again. My twelfty-umpteenth deal with the always charming Keith. Another double bass, and another super nice one at that. If you want DB type gear there is no finer person to deal with (advert: he has a rather nice Eminence bass for sale as well)

My newly acquired Fender Jaco Tribute bass. I prefer a scratchplate and I don't want to emulate/hero-worship Jaco so I have added a tort plate from Howard the Bass Doc and ditched the roundwound strings in favour of meaty-sounding TruBass black nylon strings. Very nice!
