1.
Umm, not wanting to sound negative, but I tried a double bass a few months ago, and despite Clarky showing me the correct technique, it felt like playing a f***ing sperm whale.
The joke was on you Nige. It actually was a sperm whale
2. Haha, if being very well informed, unfailingly helpful and friendly qualifies someone as a geek, then you are indeed a geek! My kids tell me I am a neek, which is altogether less good
3. Thanks Gareth for your comments. You are always a fantastic source of info
4.
You can do the IEM relatively cheap with small mixers and cheaper ear phones. I've tried this with an acoustic duo playing large venues. It was just too fiddly for our short setup times so we reverted to pickups and monitors and it was more stuff to carry. How big is the group? Have you tried just using one or two central mics and standing in semi-circle around them with out backline?
OK, thanks. Sounds impractical and too fiddly for us too. Our line-up is drums, guitar, mandolin, DB and two vocals. Think I will just stick with a piezo pickup for simplicity's sake!
5.
I reckon IEMs would help to reduce it, as you're taking the back line out of the equation.
There's a thought. Unfortunately a thought that - with decent microphone thrown in - becomes a pricey one to test out. Has anyone on BC tried this perchance?
6.
Is this question posed in the context of running the mic to backline? If this is the case then feedback will generally follow whatever the quality of the mic and its amplification chain. But if you run the mic to front of house and not have monitors too close it will work very well. Only trouble is the audience will enjoy the great double bass sound but you won't! You will have to run a pickup to backline to hear yourself.
Unfortunately I was thinking primarily about the former - ie, to backline
7. Its just such a shame as no pickup ever conveys the true sound of a double bass IMHO
8. http://www.cliftonbasses.co.uk/doublebass.html Here's the link. £58 sounds good value compared with strings if it really sorts out tension issues
9. Try BassDirect, closer to Buxton than the Gallery and they have shifted several fretless Wals to my knowledge. Thinks its 15% comm
10.
Really enjoyed this! Nice work Clarky. Gonna have to try & catch you live.
Many thanks. We just played our best gig yet, tonight at the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen. We were really on form but, my word, the main act (Phillious Williams, a mix of country/blues and rock) were fantastic. They are bound to be signed soon
11. Best gig yet with All The Queens Ravens. Played the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen. Great sound on stage, appreciative audience and we just clicked really really well. This is why I do this, still buzzing We were support act to a new Country-esque act called Phillious Williams. My word are they good, they will be signed to a record label very soon I predict
12. These came on my old German flatback that I bought from BC'er Emlyn several months back. I took them off immediately as they are too high tension for me (I prefer Kolstein Heritage and SIlver Slaps very low tension strings). They are a bit ragged on the silks (not very) but completely useable. I am fairly sure they are Helicore Hybrids as that is what I recall Emlyn telling me (they have green silks at the ball end with golden thread if that helps identify them). New these are £104 a set at String Express, so how about £35 posted to reflect the somewhat used state? You can see pics of the strings in situ in Emlyn's FS ad http://basschat.co.u...circle-pick-up/
13. Oops, sorry Al I have scoured the house and cannot find it - or for that matter my Ray Brown double bass tutorial book. Guess I must have lent them to some one and forgotten who ... I do have a couple of other DB books I will bring along on Wednesday, one a very basic beginner's DB book and the other a bit more involved (walking DB bass lines). You are welcome to have those for as long as you like!
14. I love Burt Bacharach's 60s/70s output As well as Look of Love, here are my two other faves http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ63MCd7jPE&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6inwzOooXRU

16. Me, trying to work out which string is which mid-gig
17. Been reading about mic'ing a double bass (eg with DPA 4099B, which seems to be the most popular) and - whiIe I understand that this risks picking the sound from other instruments on stage (and monitors) - I don't understand why various sources talk about trying to avoid feedback. WIth a piezo I can understand that if the bass starts vibrating (eg from a boomy stage or monitor nearby) it gets picked up by the pickup and a feedback cycle can ensue. But an isolated mic (the 4099B is just attached by rubber feet to the strings below the bridge) surely only picks up sound, not vibrations, so why does it feed back?
18. FWIW I just tried my new Bass Max on my Kolstein. It sounds hugely better than the nasal, reedy mid- heavy sounding Planet Wing pickup I had on it before ( the stock pickup with this DB). Nice coverage from deep bass through to the upper registers, without that horrid finger noise or middiness I had before. I am really quite happy with this. I can only suggest Kev that your Bass Max is damaged or alternatively that it's just sods law and it simply is not compatible with your bass/string/bridge set up.
19. Beautiful Nick. My fave colour of the non-standard 'retro' schemes, just trumping fiesta red. Hope it plays as well as it looks mate
20. Still nothing as scary as hearing a shrill female voice yell "Clarky, where are you?"
21. A number of you know Malcolm Healey, the best repairer of DBs in SW London who also makes a rather nice DB or two. Just as an FYI, when I took in my bass to get the soundpost and bridge fixed, Malcolm said he is semi-retiring and closing the shop in Sutton down. He is going to concentrate on building DBs from his home in Boxhill, Surrey (near Reigate, just south of the M25) but will also need some repair work to help pay the bills. For those who want to use his services (or indeed order a new hand-built DB) his new details are as follows: Malcolm & Jane Healey Violins and Basses Boxhill House, Boxhill Road, Tadworth Surrey KT20 7PW 01737 844164 Google map: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?client=safari&q=Boxhill&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF-8&ei=p7ASUITyNPOb1AXYg4G4BQ&ved=0CEcQ_AUoAg
