5-string basses - how useful is the 5th string? POLL time, yay!
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in Bass Guitars
Other than general interest, part of the reason underlying my OP was that I am "time poor" due to work, family etc and to become truly familiar with my 5-stringer will require quite a bit of practice and neglecting my 4 stringers ... so I was wondering if this is a worthwhile exercise or whether I should just stick with the familiarity of my 4 stringers -
Thanks Dave, ho hum. Looks like a great sounding practice (as opposed to gigging) cab on my hands for the foreseeable future then!

OK thanks Mr F, sounds like a no-no. Thanks gents for your replies

I have an Acme 8 ohm 2x10 cab that I have been trying to sell unsuccessfully. Its fabulous sounding (studio quality, a la Euphonic Audio) but not very loud and apparently needs a good 600W through it to push any serious air. The 4 ohm version I am told is plenty loud and is what I should have bought. Question for you more technically minded - is is possible to convert an 8 ohm cab to 4 ohms simply and at relatively low expense (obviously via an electrical specialist not by an idiot like me!)? I am sure I could get it done if I sent back to the manufacturer but thats not an option as Acme are in the US.

Bireli Lagrene, the master of gypsy jazz guitar, shows that he could also have been a masterful bassist albeit with a huge debt to Jaco (with whom he played in a trio in the 1980s) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY_wH15a7C0

I have 4- and 5-string basses but find it confusing switching from one to another. Chris_b also mentioned in a post earlier today how he sticks to 5 only as he doesn't practice enough with 4's to be able to be comfortable on both. Thus I thought I'd stick up a little poll on the utility of that 5th string (for argument's sake here assuming its a B string, although I appreciate some have a high C instead)

Not that it matters but my view is that Blur were very sloppy but energetic and I enjoyed it as a rock n roll performance. It was never chamber music and some people seem to have been expecting note-perfect clinical perfection. jeez you should have head my old punk band live, we made Blur look like Peter, Paul & Mary

I have the same cabs as bassace/Roger (ie, Wizzy 10, 12). I haven't gigged the 10 yet but I can tell you the 4 ohm Wizzy 12 is mighty loud (and you can add the 4 ohm Wizzy 10 with an AI Clarus+ head as it goes down to 2 ohms). I have gigged the Wizzy 12 in a 14-piece swamp blues band, so its loud!

Delivering a bass in a large flightcase - cost and wrapping?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
To be clear, Chris it's on trial ... So it may end up being sold or it may end up back in my hands. I like the untitled (brown) album by the Band but the rest doesn't really do it for me, hence I don't feel a special affinity with Danko. I just got the bass cos I thought it was cool and would fit with a retro zombie band ...and you know what happened there -

Delivering a bass in a large flightcase - cost and wrapping?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Huh, call that a flight case!, now this IS a flight case! I had to have it custom made for the rediculously large bass that lives in it (Adrenaline Flight cases are awesome if you're looking for one- they did not line it with the velvet though) Here is how it turned up I had a flightcase sent to me once covered with bin bags! I agree with others, if you don't cover it with cardboard, then use loads of packing tape to make sure it doesn't pop open in the truck or the driver doesn't sneak a peak!
My thats a big one, missus The consensus seems to be that putting some cardboard round, maybe using cable ties on the locks and lots of tape to stop it being opened should see it right. Cheers all! -
Have you tried UPS Clarky? I work for them. I will try to find out tonight (I work nights) approx shipping costs, insurance cover etc.... for you if you like? it's no bother for a fellow Basschatter.
Thanks fellow Clarky, the Interparcel quote was in fact using UPS -

Delivering a bass in a large flightcase - cost and wrapping?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
OK I've partly answered my own questions by going on the Interparcel website. The size/weight don't seem to be an issue (the quote was only around £15, albeit with minimal insurance). So that box is ticked What about securing it or wrapping it? What would you do? -
Hi all, a BCer wants to try out my Bruce Johnson bass but is at the other end of the country and neither of us have plans to travel in the other's direction any time soon. The bass comes in a whopping great aluminium cornered flight case (18" x 6" x 54"; pictured below) and the whole thing weighs about 50 pounds. Has anyone had something like this delivered in the UK with Interparcel/ParcelForce etc? Will they accept something this big and heavy and do you recall roughly how much it cost? Also, would you try to put some wrapping around it or is this negating the whole point of a flight case!!!! Incidentally it has those turning locks where metal 'plates' slides together as you twist the lock and doesn't have a key so in theory it could be opened in transit. All suggestions/help gratefully received!
