1. My next very infrequent bump! As stated, cracking head-high speaker for DB as well as quality PA speaker. £100 collected from Hammersmith area. Absolute barg and a great feedback fighter for you DB'ers in particular
2.
It's an age thing. The core of Basschat regular posters is dominated by the 40-60 age bracket.
I ran a poll on this a couple of years ago at which time the biggest faction on BassChat was 40-49 year olds but there were plenty (>40%) below 40. However there very few below 20 http://basschat.co.uk/topic/84782-how-old-are-you/page__st__100__p__816917__hl__how%20old%20clarky__fromsearch__1
3. And this guy makes a Ricky fretless sound fabulously DB-like when playing jazz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2-88-nlIgg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7ivOkt6Ya4&feature=channel
4. I thought it might be useful to set up threads with good YT clips of particular bass styles (eg, funk, metal, latin, jazz etc) but since I am a bit besotted with my Wal at the moment thought I'd start with fretless bass. Feel free to chuck in further clips so it can be a sort of style library for those interested in delving in. This guy is a very melodic player of a fretless Wal 5 string - here's his version of Jaco's 'Come on, Come over' followed by a very easy-on-the-ear improvisation over one chord http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhr6I8YVpqo&feature=channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_-zr5AwQbU&feature=relmfu
5. I have been contacted about a spare fretted Wal Mk 1 neck (it looks great although the hardware is chrome, whereas on my bass its gold). Its Euro 520 posted to UK (ie, around £430) which isn't so eye-watering. I don't think I will go for it but if anyone else is interested I can put them in touch
6. I echo the above, quite wonderful fretless basses and yours is a beauty, irrespective of whether Percy slid any harmonics on it
7. Pierre, whats with the writing (Nile Rodgers etc) on the rear - was it signed for Percy by Nile?
8. I was just being a gear-stalker, admiring his (I assume) Pino Palladino CS Precision. Thats how sad I am
9.
Indeed, you may as well wear a shirt saying 'I don't like having sex'.
I have one similar, its says 'Married'
10. By the power of Greyskull, I sense that this beautiful bass is now owned by a lucky BCer of Belgian persuasion
11. If the neck stamp dates it to September, perhaps its Verdine White?
12. Hmmm, maybe the Wal database listed bass W-2900 incorrectly? Its a shame this guy's photography skills (and English) are so rubbish as it may well be a super-nice bass but the dingey, blurred pics and CAPS LOCK problem will be putting people off (plus TBH its a few hundred quid too pricey even if its all legit IMHO)
13. I do recall someone quoting an exorbitant price for a fretless neck but was just checking. I think I will have to give it a miss unless its dramatically cheaper!
14. I have a fretless Mk 1 and wonder about getting a matched fretted neck (allowing the choice). Does anyone happen to know if Wal has a stock of necks lying around (so you don't have to wait 1 year plus for them, like a full bass) and how much Paul Herman would charge (roughly)? Ta
15.
So I'll throw my hat in the ring and say let's hear it for Martyn P Casey from The Triffids, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Grinderman. Great melodic and supportive lines that I could sit looping for hours on end.
Absolutely. I've started threadfs on this guy before. He doesn't play anything technical and I bet 90%+ of BC'ers could replicate his lines without any real difficulty. But his lines work so well in the song context and are often very melodic, even if simple. Think Red Right Hand, Do you Love Me, Stagger Lee etc. Just brilliant.
16. I bought a Kolstein double bass with a full-on moulded hard plastic (fibreglass?) case with metal buckles etc. Its absolutely enormous! I would not contemplate ever using it for a gig and instead its sat taking up a large proportion of my study. I would take the advice above and flog it on eBay and buy a good padded case instead
17. Just to get people's hackles up further, I think the best Blur album (and actually rather good) is ThinkTank, which of course was after Graham Coxon left. Furthermore I sat through a Coxon gig in Hammersmith recently - derivative pseudo-psychedelic Syd Barrett-gets-an-electric-guitar stuff that was perfectly OK in small doses but became boring after 3 or 4 songs. Hence I cannot agree he was the only talented member of the band
18. Drop a PM to Gareth Hughes would be my advice. He has one on his Eminence I believe. I think bassace has one too
19. On further reflection I am withdrawing this. For one thing its got to be worth a damn site more than the price of a nameless Eastern European new-build carved double bass and - more importantly - its so cool and retro I think I will regret selling it.
20.
Got anything lined up Mr C? You can always reform Sensation=blue/grey...........
I mentioned that once and thought I got away with it Besides electric blue chelsea boots and 32 pleat Bowie trousers don't suit me so well these days
21. I think wateroftyne has been trying to sell one of those for some time http://basschat.co.uk/topic/111472-caps-lock-key-available-again/page__hl__caps%20lock%20key
22. This badly worded, shouty eBay ad with dark pictures is for an American Walnut, lined fretless Mk 1. Says code from back plate is W-2900 http://www.ebay.co.u...b#ht_500wt_1387 This is what the Wal database says about W-2900 - English olive ash facings, unlined fretless neck and a pic: http://www4.informat...ics/W2900-2.jpg Full description here http://www4.informat...al/walspec.html These are not the same bass. Even if we assume someone decided to add lines to the fretboard, the wood patterns are completely different (as are the woods!) Something very odd going on here
23. Bump. Another thing it has that the Plat Pro doesn't - in addition to much more sophisticated EQ and tuner - is a stompable boost for those that like to take solos. I tended to leave it on Nigel Tufnell-style as it meant I was playing at 11
