1. I bought this bass a month ago from Kev Hopper (aka Spoombung), the talented ex-Stump and solo bass (and musical saw) player. I absolutely love the design, which is so far from my usual boring Fender obsession its untrue, and the dead-on 7 lb weight is just fab for someone with a dodgy back like me. The problem is the neck dimensions are very Jazz-like and just not terribly comfortable to me (I prefer a slabby Precision or Wal type neck, especially since I broke my hand in a couple of places 18 months ago and it tends to cramp up with narrow necks). I paid £600 but have since had the broken E string piezo bridge saddle refurbished by Rolf Spuler in Switzerland (I have re-soldered it in and the piezos all now balance perfectly), so I'm bumping up the FS price very slightly to reflect this, to £625. Comes with Affirma hard case (slightly scraped/bashed and missing one of three locks, but perfectly functional). I should be able to post this as I happen to have a cardboard box that fits the hard case like a glove. Here's Kev's original FS ad with loads of pictures and details http://basschat.co.u...ge__hl__affirma Here's a couple of Kev's pics which I am sure he would be cool about me using:
2. The problem here is Keith and I did a complex trade involving three double basses and cash, which was decided pretty much on the spur of the moment in a car park, and hence we neither have the exact figures put to each instrument on paper! I do think the Baby Bass could be worth as much as £2500 given the condition. However, I will stick to the £2000 figure on condition the instrument is collected in an entirely hassle-free manner from me.
3. Hi Gwilym, I always try to remember that the internet is open to all to read so I have been deliberately vague about the reasons, other than to mention that there's a group of three people who have known each other for decades and then there's me. Suffice it to say my reasons remain as valid today as yesterday. Its all very sad but onwards and upwards, both for me and separately for Rattlin Bone (who I genuinely believe have the potential to go places still)
4. Another pic, which seems to want to import sideways for which apologies Me playing the Baby Bass at Upton Blues in our acoustic set
5. I heard back from them asking me to reconsider this morning but my mind is made up.
6. Back up for sale following changed band situation and incoming Epi UL310. I am selling either this or my Acme Low B2 cab, whichever goes first Edit: Epi deal off so withdrawn again!
7. I got this wonderful example off Mr_Bassman (Keith) for use in my former band due to it's cool retro vibe and feedback-proof playing (there were up to 14 of us on stage and it was very noisy). Although it still retains the slightly dark and relatively quiet sounding original pickup, Keith wedged a Revolution Solo piezo pickup in the bridge assembly which sounds much nicer to my ears. Barring a few very minor surface scrapes and some small abrasions on the back of the neck (which incidentally is very thin front to back, like a Jazz bass rather than a thick old double bass) it is in quite amazing condition. Comes with a cool old velvet lined hard case. I think it's worth considerably more than the £2,000 Keith and I valued it at in our trade but in BC spirit will offer it on at the same price, collected from London. I will miss this incredible looking instrument but the reality is - having just acquired a 19th C German bass and owning a beautiful Kolstein travel bass - I do not need three double basses. One small caveat here - Baby Basses from the 60s are made of some kind of hard plastic (and filled with foam) which over time let's out some kind of harmless odour. It means they have a slightly odd smell, especially if kept locked away in the hard case for any length of time. Not an issue for me, especially if kept on a stand, but best mentioned! 8. Walk on By for me too. My fave Stranglers track and a regular on my IPod journey to work. Great song ( obv by Bacharach), great bass, great guitar solo, it just has everything
9. Cheeky sod! Thanks for the offer Keith but I have a little u-bass for travel bass playing fun
10. Jack, I thought you just bought your ultimate GAS-killer?
11. Sounds like a plan! That really is a very pretty sunburst, many congrats
12. Very pretty. So when are you painting it surf green?
13. Nice try Chris (Band tribute, yeah right!) Truth is I have a lot of money tied up in a bunch of instruments I bought specifically for the vibe of my former band and would frankly rather have the cash right now. Do I need two fretless basses and two double basses. I think not
14. Well, my estimation was complete rubbish. With a strap on, it weighs almost exactly 11 pounds. It balances very well and is not neck-heavy - I am guessing because of the heavy cast bridge parts (much of which are hidden from view within the body). I think its balance is why I initially guessed at a lighter weight (I have a recurrent lower back problem and a rotator cuff problem in my left shoulder so I normally can't take a bass of >10 pounds).
15. Thanks Kiwi (still can't get used to the lack of Crazy ...) I put an AI Clarus and Markbass F1 through it and unfortunately they put out 450W and 300W respectively at 8 ohms - which means the cab sounds wonderful but not awfully loud
16. Just back from the Alps (yes, this blow-up happened by email on my penultimate day of a family holiday - nice). Once again, I really appreciate all your messages of support and some really sensible advice
17. PM'd back Barry. I'm afraid I don't think is the sort of cab you are after
18. All yours Beedster (I had put you forward as a dep last year). The upside is you would be playing some great music.
19. Travelling back from hols today so will weigh exactly tomorrow. My guess is about 10 lb
20. Thank you all. Appreciate the advice and sentiments. I won't go into detail, suffice to say that when band members have played in bands for up to 30 years together its natural they will side with each other in any arguments/issues. I was effectively the new kid on the block and my input was clearly not appreciated. Anyways, I am sure Rattlin Bone will keep going and make great music, just with a different bass player. I hope for their sake they find someone as committed and into the music as I was
21. Well that's the end of me and Rattlin Bone (and the new spinoff VoodooVille). The usual stuff - band politics - and I felt it was best for me to leave. I am absolutely gutted as I really felt the band could have gone places and I got on with most of the members really well. I will always be grateful for being given the opportunity as a virtual double bass newbie and I learned tons about playing in a big band, controlling a DB live and general musicianship. I invested a huge amount in the band, in terms of time, emotion and money (you may have seen I have put up for sale the Bruce Johnson fretless I bought specifically for the retro/voodoo vibe of the band; and I may be selling more gear in due course). I am not sure whether to start looking for a new band immediately or to take a breather. I'm inclined to the latter as I haven't spent as much of my free time with my family as they deserve. When yesterday started I had no idea it would end up like that. I am very very upset that it has come to this.
22. I am out of UK at moment and back Sunday. Will weigh it precisely then. My guess is around 10 pounds, perhaps a shade under.
