MarkBass F1 or EA Micro for doubling? Or A.N.Other?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Maybe you shouldn't have sold your F1 last year Clarky ;-) Let me know if you want to borrow it for a few gigs.
Thanks for the offer Dave. Annoyingly I didn't try the F1 on a double bass gig so I don't know if it works well in this setting - its great for electric -
Wrist Tendonitis issues - instrument options?
Clarky replied to thisnameistaken's topic in General Discussion
It seems logical (to me anyway) that the combination of the unnatural angle that the left wrist assumes in the lower positions plus the sheer distance to the Thumb's nut (due to its unusual body vs neck gemoetry) must be exacerbating matters and that to find a playing position or bass which brings your left wrist closer to your body can only be beneficial. I doubt anything you do with the Thumb (eg, strap button placement, different strap) could change that fact in any meaningful way, sadly. Probably does mean a new bass if you are keen to go electric in a serious way. A bass where the body sits easily across you and where - contrary to some suggestions - there is a thicker neck may mean an easier grip. I still get pains from my broken left hand and find I get less cramp with a thicker neck than a skinnier neck, I assume because there is less tension in the hands as you curl your fingers into the ball shape. You might consider it a dull bass by comparison but have you thought of borrowing a good old Fender P from someone (as opposed to skinnier necked Jazz)? The body hangs very naturally, can be moved a little laterally to your right so you can pluck nearer the neck with a straight-ish right wrist and in so doing brings the nut towards you? Just a thought. And then there is also a short scale, not all of which look like kid's learner basses! Warwick are going to be making some short scale basses according to a post by Throwoff today, which might be your ideal half-way house? Good luck mate in getting this sorted -
2012 NAMM Markbass products - finally they listened!
It seems that not getting a new LM3 was perhaps a good idea. Check www.markbass.it and download their 2012 brochure! A very small 500W digital amp, with aux/headphone in and a MUTE! My word...a MUTE!!!! It's good to see them catch back up. Interested to know the price!
The little 500W amp is very cute indeed. Wonder when that will become available? -
MarkBass F1 or EA Micro for doubling? Or A.N.Other?

Interesting that you favour the GK so much Keith. As Geoff said, there's a fan club too on Talkbass. My problem is that the MB200 would no way cut it against the 14 piece full-blown Rattlin Bone and i really only want one amp. Maybe its larger brother, MB500, is the answer (specs below): MB 500 • 500 watts @ 4 ohms, 350 watts @ 8 ohms • 10dB pad • Four-band active EQ w/variable contour • Effects loop and tuner output with mute • Headphone/line output • XLR out, pre/post EQ & ground lift switch • Boost footswitch • Two speakon outputs MB 200 • 200 watts @ 4 ohms, 140 watts @ 8 ohms • 10dB pad • Four-band active EQ w/contour • Headphone/line output • XLR out, pre/post EQ • Speakon output -

MarkBass F1 or EA Micro for doubling? Or A.N.Other?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thanks Gareth, I did think about that - thats a great deal! Also the Markbass LMTube 800 which has a ton of power and the option to dial in or out the tube preamp -
Mike just bought a box of 50-odd jazz CDs off me despite not knowing what most of them were, very trusting! But seriously, he paid super-fast, was consistently friendly in communications and I am delighted to start a feedback thread for him. Enjoy your next few months jazz crash-course, Mike!

MarkBass F1 or EA Micro for doubling? Or A.N.Other?
I`ve been getting good results with my LM II for both leccy and Upright, by using the amp eq fairly flat for electric and using a pre-amp into the FX return socket for the upright. It`s powerful and clean and suits both jobs depending on what cab you use.
Thanks Monckyman, thats the head that was in my old Markbass CMD121P combo which did indeed work really well for both. I wonder whether the F1, which I know when launched was described by many as cleaner and less than warm than a LMII, is better or worse suited to DB???? -
I just met Kev who handed over his lovely Ibanez Affirma bass to me. Very good buying experience. Lots of info upfront and a friendly and interesting guy to chat to as well. Many thanks Kev, it was a pleasure! Look forward to listening to the CDs of yuour music that you popped into the case, too

I started a new feedback thread but later found there was an existing one, which I have transferred the comments to. Sorry, numpty time!

MarkBass F1 or EA Micro for doubling? Or A.N.Other?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Hmmm, thus far I am getting the message not to sell my Acoustic Image head, after all! Edit: and in response to your question Geoff, I found the EA Doubler had a slightly synthetic (compressed?) sound to it compared with AI, noticeably less 'natural' sounding with my double bass. I know loads swear by this amp though (I got pretty shot down on TalkBass when I criticised it) so it could have been the combination of the bass, the piezo pickup and the amp between them that just didn't work for me, rather than specifically the amp. -
MarkBass F1 or EA Micro for doubling? Or A.N.Other?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thanks gents. I used to have a Mesa WA combo but my recollection was that its very warm and tubey, which might sound good with DB in a bigger band with drummer etc but I would have thought would not be acousticky enough for an acoustic small band? Great for electric bass, undoubtedly though -
I am trying to sell my over-spec'd Acoustic Image head (notch filters, phase switch, different room ambients and EQ are all provided by my LR Baggs venue DI pedal so I effectively end up with these functions twice in my signal chain!). i want to replace it with a simpler (and cheaper) head that can be used equally for electric and double bass. The requirements are that it be: - compact and light - powerful enough for rock gigs (signal chain: SFX preamp > head; or no preamp at all) - sonically very clear (ie, uncoloured) for use with DB (signal chain: LR Baggs preamp > head) - which rules out lots of amps - high quality Based on having owned a Markbass CMD121P combo, I reckon the MarkBass F1 fits the bill nicely. I did own an EA Doubler but didn't like the DB-specific features (notch/phase etc) which didn't sound as good as my Acoustic Image Clarus. However, the EA Micro is a more straightforward head, without the DB functions that are superfluous to me, and may fit the bill too. Any thoughts here, ladies and gents?

Bunch of reviews for those unfamiliar with this ultra high clarity cabinet http://acapella.harm.../t-1873679.html http://www.talkbass....duct/187/cat/28 http://bassamps.blog...i-cabinets.html http://www.bgra.net/...51&type=cabinet The blurb from the website says:

A very compact cabinet with the bass extension of a good 18" subwoofer.

Amazing transient response; from the fundamental of the open B-string, right up to the highest harmonics of a C or F-string.

Loud enough for a single cabinet to hold its own against most drummers.

High power handling. 350W RMS is a good starting point due to the relatively low efficiency of the cabinet. 500W RMS is ideal. The more power, the better the sound. (Within reason - It's only a 2x10"!)

Use it with an upright bass for loud jazz gigs and be rewarded with true acoustic tone.

A pair makes a very loud, versatile and compact rig. Stack them end on end for amazing dispersion and clarity or side by side for enormous kick. Use them as a high quality PA. For those occasions where true bass response is paramount, monitor your recordings with them. They really are that 'HiFi'! And the entire rig will still fit on the back seat of your compact hatch. Another fine example of Wes Steed's work (neck flaming and rosewood board especially lovely) - nice one Kevin

I got this recently from BC'er Soliloquy. Its the 8 ohm version of Acme's rarely-seen (at least in the UK) and much-praised Low B2 cab and is in very good condition. While it has superb hi-fi like clarity - making it wonderful for double bass and those who prefer totally uncoloured sound - I just don't think it has quite the volume capabilities I am after, as I was looking for a cab to double between electric and DB. Having A/B'd them properly in the past week, its not as loud for example as my Wizzy 12" 4 ohm cab. These cost over £500 to import from the US, after shipping and import duties, and I will let this go at the £300 I paid*. I don't have a box big enough so in the first instance its collection only (I am in West London, nr Hammersmith) Edit: * now £280 Stock pic: Specs here: http://acmebass.com/ SOLD

I just sold an Aguilar amp to Andy. Good honest communications and a friendly chap. Thanks Andy and hope you love the amp!
