1. One of the trombone players in Rattlin Bone also plays DB (he also makes DB's incidentally, so knows what he is talking about regading the instrument). He has a Czech-made, unnamed 3/4 laminate bass he would like to move on. He describes it as a "bit scratched but good playing order, been set up and serviced with new strings". He is looking for £300. He is in Portsmouth. If anyone is interested, please PM me and I will pass on his email address.
2. Here's some pics and an article about Herbie's original:
3. Strangely for me I rather like the look of that. Would never buy one though - I'm sh*t enough with simple parallel frets. Give me those slanted ones, especially should I ever dare sneaking up the dusty end (oo err) and there would be cats wailing across the South of England
4.
I have actually used auralex strips under the cab for electric gigs on boomy stages, and I've tried it with the upright but it doesn't reduce feedback at all when the speaker is behind the bass. And imo life is too short to fiddle with my notch filter. @ clarky, don't you get the same phase type probs that Lawrence is talking about? If you don't, it would certainly be a cheaper solution than two midgets (although I'm mad to hear what that would sound like. Awesome, I guess.).
I didn't notice any phase problems but the gigs concerned were bl**dy loud with 14 of us and me standing next to a sousaphone player! I used the floor speaker more for the drummer and the head-height Mackie for me
5.
Are you checking your PMs in teh Personal Messenger menu as I sent you one two days ago that you still haven't read (it was to tell you Beedster would be interested)? Could be a problem with your PC and the new website?
6. A here's what it looks like type bump!
7.
@ Clarky... I was wondering whose resistance would crack first @ Chris & Lawrence I thought maybe the separation wouldn't be a good idea. Pity. In fact my bass is as feedback resistant as could be hoped for, i think, as long as the speaker isn't directly behind the body. In that case, raising the speaker is the only option - some of these 'stages' are so small and/or crowded I'm literally a metre away from the speaker. The ideal would have been one speaker raised behind for monitoring and another in front for extra bottom. I'm pretty sure what's happening is that the loss of acoustic coupling means I lose bottom, and the temptation to boost the low then swallows watts. I can get enough volume as long as I don't do that and instead work with the mids. All is compromise, i guess. Thanks for your thoughts
Maybe something downfiring like an Acoustic Image cab (which would also come in handy as a sole cab for those quieter gigs, should you ever do those)? Or cheaper still (and what I did) get a Mackie C200 passive 10" speaker and stand, use that as the head-height speaker, and couple it with Midget on ground (in my case it was an Acoustic Image or Wizzy speaker on ground).

9. Sorry, to me they look like someone's taken an Alembic Series 1 and bionically fused it with a tart's handbag. I'm sure it sounds great though
10. Bump with a difference. Here is Herbie showing how he doubled the bass line on Walk on the Wild Side with with his DB and his '59 Jazz: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBXUP5GqYJs
11. Clarky and Takamine
12. Yep, he did get it (I left it in the hard case 'candy' compartment). It didn't help me much either
13. I can only assume the tube was an improvement (or why add it?) but TBH the old preamp sounds pretty damn DB-like. As a warning the preamp is fiendishly complex but allows you to set something like 18 preset tones - these were already done on my old one and I just selected the one that didn't feedback in the room and that sounded best for the accompaniment
14. I posted this earlier in Amps & Cabs but this may be best for a DB player. £100 for the lot, collected. See below http://basschat.co.uk/topic/161351-mackie-c200-speaker-cover-stand%3B-great-for-db-as-well-as-pa/page__pid__1451486#entry1451486
15.
Mackie make great, very sturdy gear. Excellent directionality too, great for if your worried about feedback and would probably make a pretty good monitor too. Buy with confidence
Thanks! Great piece of kit, just not needed now
16. I got one of these from Mr_Bassman (aka Keith) at the start of this year when struggling with volume and feedback with my double bass. Placed at head height on its tripod stand and not pointing at the body of the double bass this allowed me to play very loudly in my 14-piece band without feedback issues. Its not being used now as I am gigging my Ampeg Baby Bass (which does not suffer feedback issues) and I can play plenty loud through my normal amp/cab setup. So I'm putting this up FS. IIRC Keith did me a great deal (about £100 with stand; they are just over £200 new before adding the cost of the tripod stand) and I subsequently bought a padded cover. Will do the lot (cab + stand + cover) for £100 collected from West London. 17.
Any marks or dings on it
No more than the original (see below) :
18.
What a fantastic bass! I had a Fender Custom Shop '60, but couldn't get on with it. How does Wes's creation stack up against the CS basses?
Thats hard to say. It has better pickups than Fender CS, lots of old Fender hardware and is very particular in style (nylon tapewounds etc), as its trying to emulate Herbie's iconic bass. In many respects, though, its very similar to a Fender CS, eg, the neck, being from a 62RI (but slightly re-worked), feels just like a Fender CS relic.
19. As the original FS thread was a bit messy and included two basses, I am kicking off a fresh one. For sale here is my Herbie Flowers replica Jazz made by BC's talented luthier Wes Steed. Its a wonderful bass with black nylon tapewound strings on for a real DB vibe and is a great copy of the iconic 1959 bass used on Walk on the Wild Side and Space Oddity (missing only the original's fuzz switch). Its not one for slapping or fast finger funk, unless you swap the strings over. I paid £1400 for the bass as it had £800 of original early '60s Fender parts (listed below). Given the state of the market I will now accept £1100. Specs: 61 Tuners + 62 bushings and screws 62 bridge + screws All screws from 60/61 including the neck plate screws String tree 61 with screw 59 thumbrest with screws Fullerton 83 RI jazz stack knobs and early bell plate Hand wired repro harness Suhr Vintage spec handwound pickup Neck from a 62RI Fender Jazz but re-profiled by Wes Wearing Herbie-correct Rotosound Tru Bass strings Note: headstock has a Fender decal which has partly scraped away (this does make it look authentic and could easily be replaced for a fiver). Comes in soft gig bag only (no hard case) Weighs 8.77 pounds Picture below is one of Wes' from his build thread http://basschat.co.uk/topic/117779-herbie-flowers-jazz-bass-replica/page__hl__herbie__fromsearch__1 and was taken before he applied the headstock decal DSCN2065.jpg I don't have a bass-sized box and I don't want to put Mrs C through waiting in all day for Interparcel pickup so this is meet-up/collected only in London
20. Just spotted this on eBay. I sold this to French BC'er Lafrite around the start of this year. Its light, with a slim neck profile and helpful side marker lines on the striped ebony board. If interested, I reckon it may pay to drop him a PM through BC. 21. Here is a reminder of the specs from an earlier post (note strings changed per post immediately before this one but could easily be switched back to Herbie-correct Tru Bass strings if you so desired):
I paid £1400 for the bass as it has £800 of original early '60s Fender parts (listed below). I would like as close as possible to what I paid although I will accept a small discount as the Fender decal (which was applied to the top of the headstock) has partly scraped away (although this does make it look authentic and it could easily be replaced for a fiver). In-line with the original bass which inspired it, it is wearing chunky black nylon Rotosound TruBass strings on which make it play more like a DB and which have a rich, thick thumping type sound with virtually no treble - as per Walk on the Wild Side, Space Oddity etc (on which the original was played). Its not one for slapping or fast finger funk, unless you swap the strings over. Specs: 61 Tuners + 62 bushings and screws 62 bridge + screws All screws from 60/61 including the neck plate screws String tree 61 with screw 59 thumbrest with screws Fullerton 83 RI jazz stack knobs and early bell plate Hand wired repro harness Suhr Vintage spec handwound pickup Neck from a 62RI Fender Jazz but re-profiled by Wes Weighs 8.77 pounds Picture below is one of Wes' from his build thread and was taken before he applied the headstock decal I don't have a bass-sized box and I don't want to put Mrs C through waiting in all day for Interparcel pickup so this is meet-up/collected only in London
22. Due to a moment of weakness I have spent some of the proceeds of my recent selling activity. Thus the Herbie bass is still available at £1200 ono (try me). it's now wearing Status black nylon 45-105 strings so it plays more 'normally' than with the thick Tru Bass strings on while retaining the DB type vibe and the look of the original bass. Collected from London only as no hard case.
23. I had the bass before Pierre (sorry it didn't work out ) and can attest to it being in superb condition. It's about as attractive a fretless as it's possible to get, if you are a Fender fan, and has a wonderful slick ebony neck
24. Fantastic news! Step by step ... You'll be slapping away (aka Clutterbucking) at the next Bass Show!
