High End Fretless Question Wal Vs Pedulla Buzz
Clarky replied to bassatnight's topic in General Discussion
Both are very well made and I susepct the main differences lie in the feel (my Wal has a slab of ebony on the neck whereas the Pedullas I have looked at have some kind of high polish on their necks) and the electronics. The Wal has a distinctive mid-dy tone that is different to most other basses, albeit its pretty versatile (I can get a convincing DB or dub sound as well, so its not just about the mids). I really like my Wal and am only selling to free up funds -
Looking unlikely I can make it too I owe some bits 'n bobs for the raffle and possibly an acoustic bass for Beedster that Wayne has kindly agreed to taxi to Canterbury. Messaging Happy Jack ....
It's a no go for me, I'm afraid I have handed over raffle bits (Sansamp, two Precision scratch plates) plus my acoustic bass (for Wayne to take back to Beedster-ville) to Happy Jack. Hope y'all have a good'un. I thoroughly enjoyed each of the last two, plus the North London BassBash. -
I was given a guided tour this evening by Jack - very impressive space with highly effective sound-deadening for the benefit of the neighbours! Only disappointment was that Jack had Nena's '99 Red balloons' on his PC playlist

I daren't even post again, its getting embarrassing! Yep, another deal with Keith and as a result I am now the proud owner of a beautiful Takamine B10 fretless. Super guy with great taste in basses
Hi Clarky. I came to see you at the Upton Blues Festival, but on the wrong day! The website said you were playing on Friday........... (I did complain, but got no answer from the organisers) Cheers, Bob
How annoying I emailed the organisers, as did other members of the band, weeks in advance to get them to change the error on the website .... sigh. They have asked us back next year though so maybe 2012? -
Tend to be top dollar prices but generally reasonable people in my experience (not cowboys, just pricey). Drop Happy Jack a PM as he used to work around the corner and was often in there

Hi there, just thought I'd point out (if you didn't already know) that anyone UK based would have to pay just over 20% import duties on the cost of the bass plus shipping (ie, >$400 on top). Unfortunately that means that US-based basses often work out uneconomic for UK'ers to import, no matter how much we might want them! And yours is a truly beautiful bass ... by the way, that isn't a cheap shot at getting a further price cut on my part as I can't afford your bass, period! Just trying to explain why you may not be overwhelmed with interest even if a bunch of BC'ers really like the look of your bass
-
Alternatively save up some more and buy a 2-channel 'doubling' amp - eg, Euphonic Audio Doubler or MarkBass Markacoustic. Won't need a separate preamp then and can flog your current amp to help pay for the incomer

No, but I have played with a badass. Kaboom-ting! Actually I have a glass back and have played many gigs with a bad back (mainly lower back pain). Painkillers, a wide padded bass strap and sitting down before and after the set are my only ways of getting through it

1. In my experience, the Custom Shop reissues tend to be slightly better than US reissues - usually nice, light woods selected and just feel better quality and attention to detail. I had a 64 RI Jazz that was really lovely (I only picked it up in a trade to move on, but I thought long and hard about keeping it as it was that nice). 2. The relic'd vs NOS price differential merely reflects the added time and effort of getting a chisel to the bass! Not worth it in my opinion. Only worth it if you want to kid people its a genuine old instrument or you are so anal about scratches that you would rather not make the first one 3. The Pino that I once owned on the other hand HAD to be relic'd (to look like Pino's) and was a wonderful Precision - light, resonant and with the most lovely played-in feeling neck. If I'm honest, every bit as nice to play and listen to as my year-of-birth '63 Precision

I played Happy Jack's old - and your new - Status PJ. I was sceptical about the whole Status graphite thing but the bass looked great (nice cherry coloured retro look) and the neck was a delight. Didn't feel sterile and plastick-y at all. Good score Nige

From our acoustic gig at the Upton Blues festival in July - several other members of Rattlin Bone (we did a separate full band set on the main stage) came on stage for the encore version of Tom Wait's 'Yesterday is Here' ... which was pretty cool and went down really well with the audience (we had been a quartet up to that point) And here's me from the Rattlin Bone set later that evening in zombie make-up (same pic as my avatar) -
Phil Nixon of BassGear had kindly brought down a bass for me to road-test from a Yorkshire-based BC'er. I had met Phil before at a couple of BassBashes and bought an Aguilar Tonehammer amp from him and I have always thought he was 'on the side' of us bass players. So I popped over this morning to his new retail outlet in Twyford, near Reading/Henley etc, about 35-40 minutes west of London. Well, its a real treasure trove for those who love a high end bass - loads of Foderas, Zons, Alleva etc on display - plus a couple of nice Fenders (and I do love a good Fender) - and some very impressive Bag End cabs. Phil is very host-ly (OK, I made up that word) and some hot percolated coffee was quickly on offer along with some great bass chatter. I know SiBob and molan have been over and I think Happy Jack may have been planning a visit too, so maybe they will chip in here. For those BC'ers who are within a 1-2 hour radius - I would say its well worth a visit. Phil is very welcoming, he mentioned that some pretty exciting new stock will be coming in over the next few months, and the basses and amps/cabs he has right now are not to be sneezed at! Some still at relocation prices too. Hmmmm ....
