I've recently gone from being the bassist in a Pagan heavy rock band to playing melodeon for a morris side. Do I win a prize?
We do indeed have a winner!

Derek Forbes' Vigier Passion on Ebay
Clarky replied to darkandrew's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
He tried to sell his Alembic Spoiler a few months back on eBay (I got offered it on the second chance basis when the buyer didn't divvy up, but I had already spent the money!) Derek emailed me and was really charming -
I have moved from death/thrash metal (2005-2007) to punk (2007-10) to voodoo swamp blues (2010+), in the last case shifting to double bass. Am now rehearsing an all-acoustic spinoff of my latest band, featuring only four of the 14 (!) members. Thats quite a shift
If this sells does that mean you will be Wal-less??
Yep - its not that I am not wowed by the fretless (it really is the best fretless I have ever played), its just too much money tied up in an indulgence and I have overspent on DB gear

Question for those who know about flatwound strings
Clarky replied to Linus27's topic in General Discussion
Status Hotwire half-rounds are really nice, and thats coming from a long-time TI user. To all intents and purposes they feel like low/medium tension flats but I think they have a bit more 'bite' and fractionally more under-finger friction. They are also cheaper than most of the strings mentioned above, including TIs ... which is nice -

More pictures (from the previous owner, who is in Germany). These give a better representation of the walnut body colour - in my pic above it was taken with flash in the evening and comes out a bit darker/more chocolate-y than it appears in reality. It is listed under the previous owner on the Wal database as number 2231 http://www4.cs.fau.de/%7Ekoesters/Privat/Wal/walspec.html

I am looking to sell this, despite it being the best fretless I have ever played (yes, I have described it as a "keeper" but circumstances change). I simply have too much money tied up in a bass that I play very irregularly. I am mainly playing DB now and when I pick up a bass, its normally my Precision or Jazz. I would like a fretless still, but a much cheaper one. TBH the cash would come in handy as I have over-spent on DB gear this year. The bass in question is a Mach I in american walnut/mahogany core with an ebony unlined board (side dots at fret positions). Its in overall very good condition, especially given its age, with just a couple of minor surface scrapes and dints - nothing serious at all but I wouldn't want to portray it as in mint condition. The bass was made in Dec 1983, comes complete with brown Wal case, tools and card written by Pete Stevens. Its not heavy, by the way - not much over 9 pounds. I paid close to £3,000 from StationMusic in Germany including delivery (edit: it was a commission sale, presumably from the German owner listed in the Wal database - see post below), which I know was top dollar. I am looking for a more reasonable [s]£2700 [/s]£2500 plus delivery. I would be interested in a part exchange against a sunburst Precision fretless, ideally a Tony Franklin or an early 70s model fretless P-bass, obviously with a large slug of cash my way. No other trade offers thank you. I am in London, work nr Liverpool Street and live nr Hammersmith.
Cheers Clarky, it's something I've looked at, have you owned one?
Yep, superb sound but definitely old school. I sold mine as at close to 50 pounds it was too much for my glass back
I'm using an Agi DB359 into a Peavey Classic 120 at present and loving the all-tube tone. I was looking to replace the Peavey with a Mesa Strategy but now think I might look at a combined pre/power as opposed to separate units. OK, I might just stick with the gear above as it would take something pretty special to get better tone, but was wondering what else out there is, well, sufficiently special to warrant a good look and possibly a few quid
Have you ever tried an Orange AD200B. Not much of a range of tones but so syrupy and rich. And I would have thought bang in line with your taste, Chris
Went out and busked for a couple of hours this afternoon and I was glad I put these strings on - my two picking fingers are pretty sore all over and the steels would've made matters much worse. I think they sound better on my bass than the steels did too. They were a bit wolfy in the lower regions but these are more open sounding. And slapped they sound great, exactly the sort of sound I wanted. Thanks again guys.
Nice one, TNIT. Glad its worked out

There was an ebay link on here a while back in which he sold a re-finned 62 Fender P (with added J) - went for £7,000. Was his standard bass in the 70s IIRC
I use my penis on slow songs. Truckstop
Didn't realise you played mandolin, Truckstop Re: thumbing, Sting uses it all the time. Gives a nice, warm rounded sound. I've no idea how some guys manage it on guitar (eg, Jim Mullen) - thats tough when playing fast!

Stingrays improve my playing...well they feel like they do.

Its all swings and roundabouts. A Stingray makes you play better, a Jazz improves your IQ and a Precision increasres penis length -
Hi, all good! IMHO Innovation should offer.a low tension gut-alike with metal core, akin to the Presto Ultralight but with Silver Slap like tension (I found the Prestos just that bit harder to play than SS's). My tuwo pennorth!

I think it was me who posted it - an Ozzy (I think) band that played about 25 song parts over a constant chord sequence. I can't search for it as on Blackberry but if you search my topics from my profile you should find it
Yes I did, I've spent the last 12 months very slowly and gradually recovering from it an I still get the occasional mild flare-up and I have to be careful about over-use. I hadn't considered that benefit actually, very good point. The weird thing is the surface of the string though, it's not at all smooth, feels very weird under my fingers. Hopefully they'll smooth off over time as I play them?
Combination of sweat, oils and finger pressure should do that, similar to flats on an electric - gotta say my perception is that Slaps are fairly smooth (only slightly rough with a bit of friction, which is useful)
-
Its just unfamiliarity as you are used to steels with skinny D/G strings and these are fat old plastic strings. Give it time and you will find them incredibly comfortable and much easier on your hands due to the tension, especially with prolonged playing (didn't you have a tendonitis problem?)

You have my number Chris Bump for a nice acoustic bass with all the gear - I forgot to add, the deal gets better, as I also spent £18 on a proper padded strap with quick release mechanism http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/12..._strap_44pa000_ -
Mrs Bassman insists that I move something on, now if you fancy a Yamaha in a trade I could sneak the fender in and she might not notice it!
Then you would have to sell me back my old P/J fretless, Keith, or Mrs Bassman would spot two very similar basses like an eagle spying bunnies in a field
