Have you tried them Clarky? Are they quite gutty sounding? Does the E sound as good as the others? What strings do you use on your Rattlin' Bone gig?
Yep, they were my favourites on my now-sold 3/4 Zeller DB. Very gut-sounding and decent volume across all strings. Be aware they are very fat, so the G will feel huge compared to what you are used to with steels In RB I now use the Ampeg baby bass, which came with some pretty low tension steels on (Jargars I think) and I am happy enough with these so have not changed them.
Cheers Clarky, after years of bare ash, it feels very fresh and funky. Love your pic - I take it that was the smaller set earlier on? Looks like your headstock skull is singing into the mike
Nope, that was in the Rattlin Bone set during one of our front man's audience rapport routines! I wasn't zombified (and no skull embellishment) for the acoustic set -
AFAIC, Silver Slaps have plenty of volume and projection - and their ultra-low tension is a revelation for your fingers

Me at Upton blues festival today in zombie make-up -
I can never tell when its dried up as it barely leaves any residue even when new. I do use it but am never 100% sure it does a whole lot

The Capri Orange P bass looks the dogs nads! -
Nah, I had this once before when playing a long set with my Zeller 3/4 DB. Its basically down to my hands not being used to it (I only ever gigged electric bass with a pick until I joined Rattlin Bone)

Played a 30 minute acoustic blues quartet (on DB) at the Upton Blues festival, which went down really well. First try-out live of my Ampeg Baby Bass. Everyone said it sounded fab Then an hour or two later, the full Rattlin Bone played the main stage for 75 minutes. Went really well and we got an excellent crowd reaction (the promoter loved it too). Only two issues: I was stood near a spotlight that was scorching and my Baby Bass got really hot and - as a consequence - went at least a half tone out of tune after two songs. I managed to find the odd tuning break after that thankfully. The other issue was that I got cramp in each hand near the end of the set and my left hand curled up like a claw - I had to really use ingenuity to keep playing (used the side of my right hand thumb to pluck for most of a song and to use one very mobile left hand finger to keep the riff up!) Managed to stretch my hands after the song and just about got through the rest of the set. I obviously need to do more hand conditioning if we are going to play longer sets more often. The above shouldn't take away from a really successful gig (or two to be precise)
I think this may have been overlooked?
Yep - my Wal can sound just like a Precision if I weight it towards the neck pickup. It can also sound like lots of other basses and like a Wal.
Ah of course. Lutehole can make customised ones and have a UK dealer who will act as an intermediary. Check out http://www.madisonandfifth.co.uk/lutehole.index.htm
Thanks will check this out I doubt I have a CD that would fit!

Unfortunately the Eko is notorious for not being amenable to the low-tech option as it has a sort of oval sound hole
I've only used my recently acquired Takamine B10 once live so far and didn't have any problems with feedback. There is a "Feedback Absorber" or a "tunable feedback attenuation circuit" built into the onboard AD Series Preamp but I've not had to use it yet.
I guess the difference, Keith, is that your Takamine was designed with amplified playing in mind (hence the electronics and presumably construction too) whereas my 1980s Eko did not come with pickup and was probably only meant to be played 100% acoustically.

Thanks Duncan. Not what I wanted to hear but, in truth, what I expected I can't see me having any use for this if I can't use it live as its not the sort of instrument I play at home (I prefer thumping away on my electrics or my DBs) and I won't be playing in a very quiet acoustic line-up. At least it was cheap!

I bought an Eko fretless recently to use in an acoustic spin-off of Rattlin Bone. I have had to abandon the idea of using it live, though, as it feeds back whenever it gets to any sort of usable onstage volume. Is this is just a hazard of acoustic basses (its much worse say than my DBs have ever been) or do I need to experiment further with pickups/mic'ing etc? It currently has a K&K Floating pickup on it which comes very highly recommended on TalkBass.
Banned in my house
Here ya go - just pretend you're reading about compressors or something equally tech-y on BassChat

Last reminder for Rattlin Bone's spot at the Upton Blues festival tomorrow Main stage 6.20-7.35pm (and a 4-piece all-acoustic blues set at 3.15 on the Acoustic stage - singer/guitars, singer/sax, trombone, DB)
So ... the SE Bass Bash is turning into a slap fest before it even happens.
I'm out if that's the case! -
Very technically adept (and it's all I can do to tap my foot in time!) That said, it's unlistenable bilge to me I'm afraid. I like some classical (Ravel, Debussy) and Puccini operas but Mozart leaves me cold. I must be too young
-
I too am 47. I am definitely getting better but that comes from playing with other musicians rather than practice per se. As for the talent question, technically I am pretty poor and I have next to no theory knowledge (not for want of trying, I just don't get it). However I like to think I can play basic basslines in a very dependable manner, am always punctual and am proactive in our band. I think these are as useful as pure talent. Not blowing my own horn either - back problems

I would love to be shown how to slap a double bass, however .... Maybe we can persuade Paul King to come along (frequenter of the DB forum, for those who don't know him, and a LOndon-based slap DB specialist) -

Nik, I presume you will be having a raffle and thus need some bass 'stuff' donations? I will have a dig around and see what I can come up with. Definitely have some vgc tab books (Bilbo!) kicking around, a Precision tort s/p and maybe some other bits and bobs -
I hope he gets back into luthiery again at some point.
+1 Paul made a nice Simonon-alike P bass for me and has some very original lightweight ideas
