Plucking finger blisters - to burst or not to burst>
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
OK, need to make a decision as its getting near bedtime! 3:1 in favour of leaving blisters alone (and Jake sounded very scientific) so the blisters stay I may reconsider if they are still here in 3 or 4 days time though .... -
Plucking finger blisters - to burst or not to burst>

Given conflicting views (thanks GH and Beedster), its a Harry Hill-style FIGHT to resolve this (well, a poll anyway) -
Just did a 4-hour rehearsal with my newly acquired Ampeg Baby Bass. Maybe its just that I am not used to steel strings (I have tended to use Silver Slap gut-alikes) or more likely its just that 4 hours is a damn long time on a DB! Either way, I have blisters on the (sore) tips of each of my plucking fingers. I have another 4 hour session next weekend. So, do I burst the blisters or not? What do you experienced DB'ers do? Edit: given conflicting answers, poll added - and don't we all love a good poll (no mention of Coldplay either)?

My trusty old Fender P Bass- still my number 1!

Nice bass, Nick and great story -
That sounds promising, I wonder how an Audere would team up with the Nordy's.
Sounded great with stock US J pickups, so no obvious reason why it shouldn't sound even better with higher quality J pickups? Audere preamps generally go for about £100 or so s/h on BC so it's not the most expensive experiment

OK, well I'm afraid I'm out of ideas here - I did once set up a thread about getting a Jazz bass to be flexible enough to sound like a P if needed and the consensus was (a) I should use a P bass if I want a P sound ( ) and (b ) while beefier J pickups (Quarter Pounders etc) and active circuitry might take you closer to a P sound, its not possible to sound very close to a P due to pickup placement etc. Sorry! FWIW, I found the Audere preamp got close to a P sound (installed in a MIA Jazz) with the special knob (z switch?) engaged .... but probably not close enough for you if you think the AC preamp isn't close enough Edit: here it is http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=121004&hl=

There's a rather lovely daphne blue NYC Sadowsky P/J on the FS forum that is neatly routed on the neck pickup for a J or a P pickup and has a pickguard for either eventually. How about that as a simple solution? Does of course require that the bass has (or could take stylistically) a pickguard Edit: this one http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...sadowsky+daphne

How close do you think your Alleva LG4 gets to a P bass sound on the neck pickup? If close enough, then maybe an AC preamp and J pickups of your choice (which could then be Wizards, lol, Nordstrands, Lollars etc)?

Thanks Chris and Big_Stu. I've dropped emails to both companies to see if they can help here

I recently bought these for £130 from Chandlers to install in my Bacchus 62 Jazz as - based on my web research - they seemed the best high-quality, vintage-alike J pickups you could get for under £200 (the split pickups from Fralin were just too expensive to justify). The buyer of my Bacchus wants to keep the stock pickups in so they are no longer needed. They are still in their box, unopened and untouched. In fact the box is still surrounded in bubble wrap! Here's the ad from Chandlers http://guitar-xperience.com/onlinestore/in...t&Itemid=38 and here's some specs and sound clips - http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant....zz-bass-pickups £100 plus post sound (more than) fair? For mainland UK, post should be about £2-3, so would be a 20% saving on new price for a new set of pickups
If you mean often right, yes I just heard something I like that loosely paraphrased was cynical is a name for those with insight that is not shared by those using the term.
OK, I just live in this apple pie and pixie dust world where, if someone pays me a compliment, I don't immediately leap to the conclusion that they are fobbing me off. By the way, the recording session was just to record the bass. Oh, and the sound engineer was a bass player and a friend.
-
I get that with any bass. Sound engineers will rave about tone when they don't want to spend time on your tone. It's the only way to get us to leave them alone.
You are a cynical person aren't you
-
There's almost certainly a placebo effect - buy a vintage bass and you expect it to sound better, so it does. I have no doubt that I do that with my '63P. That said the sound engineer on our last recording session just raved about the sound of my bass so maybe I got lucky?

I use the dots on the side of the neck (which on my Wal are where the 3/5/7/9/12 etc frets would be) just as I do when playing a fretted. I realise this makes me reliant on the dots rather than muscle memory but fact is I haven't even got good enough muscle memory on a fretted bass so I have no hope of intonating properly on a fretless with out a visual aid. So I am the bass player that has to stare at the bass neck frequently when playing, which is not a biggie in my book! After all, I'm only "the bl**dy bass player", not the front man or the guitar hero

Found this post from Gareth Hughes: "A string I've found to be an absolute joy for pizz and arco are Kolstein Heritage strings. They have a lovely low tension and are closer in sound to gut strings than steel. And they also have excellent customer service. Check out www.gollihurmusic.com for prices and other options. I've had Kolstein's on both my upright and my Eminence portable upright and they work beautifully on both. Another string I'm loving for both arco and pizz, and currently have on my upright are Velvet Blue's."

If you are either (a) having trouble getting to sleep or (b ) someone with an incredible attention span (ie, not me) there is a 32-page Mega-thread on Eminence upright basses on TalkBass. Its starts at the inception of these in 2001 so you might be better to wade in half way through http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f101/eminenc...athread-314531/

Gareth Hughes and The Rev should be along shortly Keith! If I recall correctly, Gareth likes Kolstein strings on his Eminence, which you are already familiar with
-
Ermm, yep, guess who again? Another great BassChat transaction with the charming Keith - this time we met face to face in a car park, had a chinwag, eyed up each others' basses and I ended up bringing not the planned one, but two, home. Keith also went his way with an unplanned addition to the household Top man!
