I was bowled over the sound clips of this (so much more organic/earthy and, well, double bass-y than a straight piezo pickup) but the cost of a new one is a pretty painful £370. So I was wondering if any of you DB'ers are looking to move one on? Cheers Clarky

The Wood Brothers - wonderful recorded DB sound
I don't use any preamp. I either run the mic straight to house, and where possible I don't have an amp on stage. Or I'll have a mackie SRM150 with the DPA and my realist, then out into a GKMB150. But I prefer when I can to just run the mic, because it's mega. I prefer to hear my bass acoustically. If you have something that will give phantom power the DPA would be fine to use into an amp, unless your playing very very loud you won't have feedback issues.
Thanks Ben, I am competing on stage with a brass section (including souzaphone in the same register), one or two electric guitars, a loud drummer, and up to five vocalists. Thus I need volume. So forgive me for my ignorance but, if I were to use a DPA, I presume I would have to use an amp (for monitoring), in my case an Acoustic Image Contra combo. Would this maintain the fidelity of the acoustic sound do you think? If not I may as well stick with my Shadow piezo pickup. Thanks again -
Aha glad someone's used them, did you get clobbered with import tax or anything??
yep I took a punt that I wouldn't and I got hit. Ended up paying close to £300 for the neck which suddenly didn't seem like such a good deal (although Allparts blocked/bound, non-logo'd, non-tuner'd necks are over £200 so I couldn't find one cheaper) Incidentally I will probably be selling the neck on as I have converted the '71 back to a fretless, now that I have a 63 P (fingers crossed) incoming
How about a pickup surround and raised bezel from Pickguardian? That's what I had on this bass
When I had a Rick, I had to get a Pickguardian surround too. There's too high a risk of falling into the pickup cavity or lacerating your fingers IMHO! As an aside, Delberthot that is an utterly fabulous looking Rick, never seen one in surf (or is it seafoam?) green before

Here's us on the Friday night at the Armazem do Cha in Porto with the promoter lady (guess which one she is? ) and here's a bunch more, freshly arrived

The Wood Brothers - wonderful recorded DB sound
I love Chris Wood's playing,he does some great stuff on both Upright and Electric. His bass is a 1920's Pfretzschner. In the studio he uses a vintage RCA 44-BX ribbon mic infront of the bridge and a DPA condenser mic clipped to the body. Live,he uses the DPA condenser and a Fishman Full Circle Pickup with the Wood Brothers, and the Full Circle and a Realist with MMW,usually through an Ampeg B-15
Thanks Doddy. Blimey you know a lot about his gear! A DPA and a Full Circle would be a bit prohibitive cost-wise (c.£600 - ouch) but they sure do sound fantastic -
I used this lot to get the blocked/bound 70s Jazz neck (MIM) that I put on my '71 P/J (in the Gear Porn pages). They just take apart recent Fenders and sell off the bits and gave a pretty good service, as far as I was concerned.
He's also the bass player in this band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9otVOpKYLw It looks like int he video he's using a small clip n mic. I've been using a DPA 4099 for a few weeks now and its the best sound i've ever gotten.
Thanks Ben - I presume you run that through a preamp (Fishman? LR Baggs?) or a specific DB amp (AI, AER?). -
I've put superglue on my fingers (very carfully as to not stick them together) before some marathon sessions. Callouses are the preferred thing but the glue can help out in a pinch.
Good tip thanks, if you will excuse the pun!

I was tipped to listen to the album 'Ways to lose' by the Wood Brothers (blues/folk duo) and duly downloaded. The DB sounds absolutely wonderful - so earthy, warm and a lovely buzz to the strings on the board. I am assuming that the DB must have been miked to get that sort of sound? I couldn't find a link to the album but here they are live:

Plus one from me. Shaun just bought a set of pickups off me and paid in the blink of an eye! If Royal Mail doesn't muck up, you will have them tomorrow mate. Nice one

Having played DB gigs two nights running at the weekend (with longish soundchecks before each), the pad on my right hand forefinger (which I predominantly pluck with) is extremely sore, although there's no blister. Damn good job I didn't do the three gigs the prior two days, I reckon. I presume there's zip all you can do about this?
