1. Two sets of strings - a cheap-ish set of DR Sunbeams and a non-discounted set of the new D'Addario black nylon tapewounds (as I hadn't seen them before). Thats it! Would have been difficult to buy a bass there (at least on the Saturday) as the slapfest din was so deafening it was all but impossible to test drive a bass properly
 2.
wasn't really implying a P is 'better' per se, I love Jazzes, but rather that the P succeeds more in terms of presence..
Thats exactly why I am having DiMarzio Model J pickups installed in my Bacchus 62 Jazz - it sounds beautiful but lacks presence in a noisy guitar based band. Hopefully the pickups will have more beef while retaining that Jazz tonality. In non-rock/punk situations, I guess a Jazz bass has more 'room to breathe' and so its lesser presence (than a P) is probably not an issue at all and the tone shines through
 3.
Intro to Why Did You Do It, the whole band came in - as expected - on the C except the bass, which for some inexplicable reason decided to play the song in Bb. It got worse. The bass didn't realise that it was wrong, and assumed that someone else had screwed it up, so it remained on the Bb for the next two bars while looking around in consternation. Luckily, this was all the bass doing it by itself, so when I realised that my bass had lost the plot I quickly took it off auto-pilot and moved up two frets. I don't think anyone noticed. Apart from the lead guitarist. And the slide guitarist. And even, God help me, the drummer.
Just call it Jazz!
 4.
Couldn't agree more.... I love slap and believe there should be more of it.... :0) .....but then again I do use a Mac, only play in a tribute and function band, own an iPhone, thinks Guy Pratt is a cock and loves slap bass.......
Is your name TIM?
 5. Thanks Frank! This package is essentially priced at the level of a new CMD121P combo alone so you get an ungigged/unrehearsed pristine 12" extension cab (costing £485) thrown in for good measure. Bump!
 6.
Yep, and my other P bass 1 year too old!
I guess I would buy your 62 if you gave me a discount for it being the wrong year
 7.
Hey Clarky, I slapped your Alleva Copello when your back was turned Great to meet you
Not my AC? noooooooooo! Likewise great to meet you. Mrs Tinman will be very jealous
 8. Lovely bass Alan, would make a great twin with Jesso's gorgeous rosewood necked 73 also for sale. Shame it's 9 years too young for me!
 9.
Simon, don't think of it as being late, more as managing to avoid the biggest and most conspicuous cockup I've ever committed live on stage.
A slap version of Smoke on the Water? Sorry couldn't be there Jack and hope to make your next 'residence gig' at the George IV
 10.
The coolest looking of all the EUBs, if ya ask me. Congrats
Thanks mate, although my vote for best looking EUB goes to the rare (and sadly too pricey for me) Kolstein Busetto travel bass, as owned by BC's Mr Bassman. Now that is gorgeous - and its based off Scott La Faro's DB (my favourite DB player)
 11.
I like slap when it's used tastefully and in it's place. Unfortunately what I heard today at the Bass Show was neither tasteful nor in it's place.... Lots of show-off bedroom bassists trying to outdo each other but not actually LISTENING to the tonal palette available from the instrument/amp they were demo-ing. Pointless and unnecessary.... and puts me, and many others, off attending future shows....
Very eloquently put, cetera. Perhaps I should have posted something like that in the OP and it wouldn't have raised the hackles of some - as its exactly what I wanted to convey
 12.
Can you amend again to include "and in shops" -that'll probably strike a chord with Pete and the other retailers/ex-retailers on here (speaking from experience)!
Happy to oblige
 13.
Sorry Clarky, my thread was a touch misleading. I forgot to mention that you never intended to knock the style, just the antics of the players at the show.
Title of OP amended to make my view clearer
 14.
Blissfully disappointed on all counts then!
Are you guys all trying to tell me its fake? Oh sh*t
 15.
Thanks! We're just starting to think about getting some gigs in London (the band's been going less than a year) - Anywhere you'd recommend we approach? Alternatively do Rattlin' Bone fancy a gig swap? We can only offer somewhere in Nottingham and since there's a lot of you it might not really be very cost effective for you - but the offer's there. Sorry I couldn't make it to your gig on Friday - got given a shed-load of work to do over the weekend (one of the perils of being self-employed you can't really say no). Let me know when your next one is.
We are bit geographically disparate (London, Bognor/Brighton, Falkirk!) so I'm afraid I don't Nottingham would work for us. Would be good to share a bill in London though. There's obviously a ton of venues (12 Bar would suit you; small venue but great vibe and alternative-y evenings on Fridays/Saturdays; plus all the Camden usuals, eg Purple Turtle, Underworld, Barfly etc). I would however recommend you contact specialist promoters like Stranger Than Paradise http://www.strangerthanparadise.net/contact.html (who arranged our Halloween gig and are promoting our gig in Brixton next month; don't know if there's a spare slot for that gig???) or Bonny & Clyde's Renegade Rendezvous http://www.myspace.com/bonnieandclydenites (who do Fridays at the 12 Bar).
 16.
Someone is going to be either bitterly disappointed or blissfully ignorant and happy!
I'm the high bidder because Norfolk Vintage Guitars said it may in fact be a '63

 18. Hey BigRedX, do you guys ever get down to London for gigs as I'd like to see your lot (and I'm sure there are other BC'ers who would be interested too)?
 19.
I totally agree with this post. I can imagine the racket at the show, and hate 'machine gun' slapping that's all technique and with no musical content whatsoever, but how can you criticise the style when it's played like Marcus Miller on something like 'Run For Cover' or Me'shell on 'Boyfriend'?. Even more complicated stuff like Primus' 'Tommy The Cat' and Larry Graham's 'Pow' are amazing grooves. I think Bubinga posted a thread a while ago showcasing musical slap grooves. Might be worth resurrecting.
Chaps, I take you back to my comments as I wrote the OP. I was not demonising slap, just the mindless pursuit of machine gun, pyrotechnic slapping at deafening volumes at bass shows ... which frankly spoil it for most attendees (take niceguyhomer's comment - he came armed with moolah but didn't buy as he couldn't hear the gear the wanted to try out over the ear-splitting din)
 20. A rubbish pic taken in my dingy study but hopefully shows the fantastic condition of this rig:
 21.
We were standing over to the side of the stage so I can't really comment on the sound from the Contra, but the DI'd sound through the PA was superb - the Eminence really does sound very DB and cut through absolutely fine, despite being in competition with three trombones and a souzaphone.
Thanks Jack - I used the DI out from the Contra to the PA so hopefully the PA faithfully replicated the tone of the Acoustic Image combo. This will definitely be my set-up for gigs with either transport or stage size issues. For bigger stages or when I can use the car I will bring my full DB
 22. Hey Mike, it's not the type of music I would normally listen to but I have to say that was a superb demonstration of amazing technique and improvisational ability. I wish I had a tenth of your abilities!
 23. Will sell individually, incidentally, but would prefer to sell as an entire rig. £475 for combo, £400 for cab and a £25 discount if you buy both together Given their size and my lack of large enough boxes I cannot ship, so it's collection/meet up only. By the way the new price for this setup would be £1327 at the cheapest online retailer I can find (DV247), excluding the c£40 Silverstone cover, so this is a near 40% saving for a virtually as-new, lightweight quality rig.
 24.
This is just a classic example of slap being used to heighten a tune, it's sat so well with the kit and it's just a great bit of playing from Freddie Washington.
I absolutely agree. However this bears next to no relation to the slap pyrotechnics at today's Bass Show!
 25. I bought this MarkBass combo for roughly £500 from BC'er alanbass1 late last year as I wanted a combo that would double up for electric and double bass. However, in the event I have decided I want a specific DB rig as that is my only gig at present ... and I recently acquired an Acoustic Image Contra from Beedster. The latter had its first road run last night at Rattlin Bone's gig at the 12 Bar in Tin Pan alley and passed with flying colours. Hence I don't need the MarkBass combo after all. Its in very good condition indeed (as my punk band is 'resting' it was only used on two DB gigs and a couple of rehearsals by me in the last 4-5 months) and has a fitted Silverstone cover. Here is alanbass1's FS thread with a pic: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=CMD121P After buying the combo I bought the perfectly stacking NY 12 inch cab (£485; http://www.andertons.co.uk/bass-guitar-amp...12-bass-cab.asp ) around 3 months ago which has never even left my house and barely been played through (I would say its had less than 5 hours playing time and 1 hour of that was chris_b testing out my old TC head!). Basically its completely as new. Unlike combo it does not have a cover. It makes a very neat (and loud) 2x12 combo when placed under the CMD121P combo. The two cost me about a grand, added together, and are both in amazing condition. How about £850 for the both, collected/meet-up in West London (near Hammersmith)?
