ARRIVED!! CIJ Fender Matched CAR 62 RI Limited Run Jazz Bass
Clarky replied to xilddx's topic in Bass Guitars
Good score Nigel. White pearl would be OTT for my tastes, would prefer an aged ivory/cream scratchplate but its not my bass! Enjoy mate -
I have done so frequently and my feedback thread tells a tale! I think you can be reasonably sure of better quality basses (for example, Sercet, I am sure I would love your Wals without even having picked them up!) but some Fenders I have owned have been very variable, including some allegedly 'higher-quality' US made ones (not the CS ones, incidentally, which have all been fab).

Best pickups to give a Jazz more presence/authority?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
Maybe it's because they won't make it sound like a P.
Fair do's! I thought they were Wizard's equivalent of Hot Stacks, Quarter Pounders etc ... which there are some votes for here! -
This.... so you will have to accept that a close cigar is as good as you can expect. I'd talk to Armstrong or Wizard.
While researching this I found an old post from BC's gafbass who said that Wizard were planning a Jazz pickup called 'the gaffer' which was to offer P-like thump .. but that was last Feb (I think) and no sign of it. I am surprised that noone has suggested Wizard Hammers here, given there is usually a lot of Wizard-love on this forum (not literally of course, apart from 51m0n ) -
Its a good question and one I struggle with as I have a very poor memory for a song from one or two plays. I found the Tascam Bass Trainer really good for learning, when the songs were already recorded as demos (as was the case in my punk and - prior to that - metal bands). Otherwise perhaps try recording a practice and playing bass along to a playback? I also have to write out the riffs and the structure (A, B, A, C, A, B etc) on a bit of paper for them to sink in. It does click after repetition though I have always found.

Best pickups to give a Jazz more presence/authority?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
There is a major issue here that perhaps I should have mentioned earlier, Chris. Mrs Clarky She likes my seafoam green Bacchus Jazz more than any bass I have ever owned (and there's been loads!) because of the colour. She has even given it a name which I will not use ("Minty"). I am banned from selling it ever and thus I want to get the most out of it! -
Not the Alleva ... tell me this isn't for the Alleva!
The Bacchus! Certainly not the Alleva (which is active and passive) -
I posted a thread about using a Sansamp to make my Jazz sound more like a Precision - or more precisely to have the capabilities of sounding like a Precision as well as a Jazz http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=120757&hl= One reply suggested swapping out the pickups for Dimarzio Model J's which got me thinking. Which passive (I don't want active) pickup gives a Jazz the most Precision-like authority in a (rock band) live setting, based on your experience, while still being able to sound like a Jazz if needed? Dimarzio Model J or Ultrajazz, Wizard Hammer, S-D Quarter Pounder or otehr (Nordstarnd, Kent Armstrong etc)? And why not have a poll since we all love a good poll? Please don't suggest buying a Precision bass or putting a Precision pick-up in my Jazz! Only interested in Jazz pickup choices

Think I recognise that from this rather ignominious FS thread on BassChat! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=Celinder
Hi Clarky, many moons ago I had a Squier Jazz, and using the BDDI was able to get a nice warm valvey Precision type sound. I think, if memory is correct, I just kept all the settings in the middle, apart from the blend which was on full. And it was through a Trace Elliot amp, so two very clear sounding pieces of musical equipment nicely "Precisioned" by Sansamp.
Thanks Lozz, will give it a try!
If it's the RBI with mid control, I'd say boosting your bass and mids, rolling back the treble a touch, and maybe setting the presence around 2/3 o'clock would be a good start settings wise.
Thanks but I have the bog standard Sansamp DDDI without the mid - will have a try of those settings minus the mid

I spotted this and immediately thought of Spoombung but I suspect even he would consider that a curve too far!

Own up, did you think your bass/guitar was plastic?

Blimey, I sort of assumed that Steinberger were quite exclusive, rather than kindling!!!!

Thanks chaps. My Bacchus is a traditional Jazz set-up, V/V/T with no S1. I assumed I would be using the neck pickup 100% but I but don't want to mod the Jazz in any way - I like the stock J sound but was hoping that I could use the Sansamp to augment it to get a P-esque sound.

Looks like you're on your own on this one Wayne PS, the moon is not made of cheese - fact -
I like the sound of Js and Ps but have found Js lacking when in noisy, rock situations (eg my punk band). I would like to use my Bacchus Jazz in this situation however, rather than it sit at home as a lovely practice toy. So I googled the title of this thread and found some people suggesting that you can indeed use a Sansamp to beef up and fill out the sound of a J. Has anyone on BC done this and - most importantly - do you have any combination of pickup/control and Sansamp settings you would recommend?

Anyone tried Presto Ultralight Nylonwound strings?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I have used them. Found the E to be quite floppy, but it still gave a decent enough tone and sustain when compared to wackers or plain guts - but not as good as silverslaps. Also found the slap to be quite plasticy and unpleasant sounding to my ears. They have the obvious advantage of working with a mag pickup, so if this were key I'd go for it; if not then I'd personally stick with the slaps.
Thanks for that mate. My Eminence has a piezo pickup so there would be no benefit on that front. Sounds like I would be well advised to stick with Silver Slaps - will also save me money!!!! -

So that will be a 'no' then? Just don't want to fork out a small fortune to find out these are wrong and then (in my usual style) sell at a huge loss!
