1. Thanks for clarifying Gareth. In response to a PM, sorry no trade offers please. I am looking to recoup spent funds here. Edit: will try to get some fresh photos up over the weekend
2. I bought this American Vintage '62 Reissue Precision from BC'er Gareth only two months ago but have decided that I want a plain Jazz - rather than a P/J - in addition to my Fender Pino. I now have a gorgeous seafoam green Bacchus Jazz, hence I am moving this on to recoup spent funds. The black nitro finish has lots of fine surface scratches but is in excellent condition (no dings) for a 1994 bass (serial V071910). Weight-wise it comes in at 9.8 lbs. Prior to my ownership (not sure if it was done prior to Gareth) the bass had an American Vintage Reissue '62 Jazz pickup fitted, together with the copper grounding strip (painted black). The control layout is V/V/T, so you can blend the P and J tones or have only one pickup engaged. There is no case unfortunately. The pic is from Gareth's original FS post (hope that's OK Gareth?) I am asking £800 collected or meeting in London. Not keen on delivery right now as Mrs C's patience has worn this with waiting in for Interparcel for me! Note this is not for those who like skinny necks. Has the 1.75" width at the nut and is quite a handful. Wearing flatwound strings, so very retro!
3. Back on topic though, the proportions of the 60th anniv bass just don't look right to me. The headstock looks too big and it looks all a bit Mike Dirnt-y, which is fine if you wanna be in a Green Day trib ....
4. Yep, it was touch on the heavy side for me too - plus I bought it thinking it would be useful in my voodoo blues band due to retro looks ... and it wasn't really needed. Lovely sounding bass though with that Lollar p/u
5. Thats a 4000 (ie, the one without the neck pickup). Shows (as usual) that its in the fingers not the instrument! Oh, and Barry, you do not need a Rick
6. Just sold Jonathan a fretless Fender Jazz. Very smooth and quick transaction for which many thanks. Hope you enjoy the world of fretless!
7. Save yourself the money Gareth and use your MIA Precision. The wear and tear will in all probability cost you less (if anything at all) than buying a "cheap backup". And you will be playing an awesome bass you can 100% rely on and know well. Or use your Stingray 4. Thats my twopenn'orth! PS, great news about the tour
8. Where are the big shiny valves? Solid state I presume
9. Hey Lenny, it would indeed look great next to Sid but is now sold pending. HNY to you too
10.
If i can get his guitar in perfect tune, just once, then its £60 well spent.
Unless it reveals that he is in fact a crap guitarist as well as a miser
11.
Is there any chance you could get a washer under the adjuster nut so you can eek out a few extra turns?
I've not tried that so its a possibility, thanks. First I will try a splash of [s]Brut 33[/s] 3-in-one oil. I had a similar problem with my Fender Pino but that just required a bit less pussyfooting with the truss rod. In this case I am at bicep-busting level and the truss rod will not turn further. It just seems wrong to me, hence I wondered about just going to the expense of having it professionally seen to
12. My '62 reissue Precision has some 45-105 strings on at present (Ernie Balls I think) and even with the truss rod tightened as far as I can get it, it has a distinct up-bow so that I cannot get the action very low. Its hardly disatrous but I do like my action on the low side (2.5mm at 12th fret ideally, whereas its probably close to 4mm currently) Should I just experiment with lower gauge strings or should I just take it straight away to the Gallery or similar to get it checked out? 45-105s are hardly transatlantic cables so I would have expected the neck to be able to accommodate these very easily and yet it simply will not.
13. I use the IntelliTouch PT-10 on my DB and my electric basses. Could not be easier. http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/accessories...rs/intellitouch It stays on the DB bridge while playing live. For my electrics I just clip it on the headstock and tune up then take it off again which is very uselful during set-ups. For a gig, mind you, I would still go through my Polytuner as its too fiddly to keep taking the IntelliTouch on and off.
14. Just sold John some DB strings. Paid very fast and friendly communications. Cheers mate!
15.
Bought Clarky's Honeys, uber fast delivery...thanks, John
Can I point out for the avoidance of doubt that Honeys are a type of bass string
16. and here's the same dude playing his Spoiler in close up, so you can see the bass in detail Shame I do not have the dosh right now
17. One of the reason I prefer flats to rounds is there is less extraneous hand noise when changing position on the neck and from the right hand. Most of my playing is at home (don't do that many gigs or practices) so I hear all the messiness!
18.
Do you know what a 'spiral' bridge is.
I just took off the bridge cover and the bridge saddles are the same spiral, vintage design as on my Fender Pino (ie, they are not standard Jazz saddles). Taken together with cardinaljay's FS thread and the model specs I have seen on the web (including the fact this has the reverse tuners and spiral bridge saddles), I am as convinced as I can be that this is the premium, alder bodied, US pickup version of the 62J fretless. There is no obvious model number to corroborate this, merely the Fender decals, serial number, and Crafted in Japan stamp. It's a cracking fretless in beautiful condition and will make someone very happy, if they are comfortable with a Jazz neck. My feedback thread hopefully gives confidence that I am no BS merchant when it comes to straight honest sales
19. Poor quality video but three great songs played (not live) on the Oxford Roadshow (remember that?) in 1981
20. Jeez, terribly sad. A unique fretless bass voice. I will always remember him standing front stage playing Visions of China on the Tin Drum tour nearly 30 years ago. RIP.
21. Hey Loz, that's a stunner. If my numbers come up on Saturday I shall be on to you quicker than a whippet! For an essentially as new Series 1 that has to be, despite the hefty price tag, one of the bargains on BC. I wish, I wish etc etc
22.
Looked around a bit myself too. Found this: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?p=9072526 Seems the CIJs have both Alder and Basswood versions - and there are other differences (p/ups, bridge) - at least for the model year the guy on this thread is talking about. Don't suppose you can tell from the other spec differences mentioned on this thread? Is the model number evident anywhere? Do you know what a 'spiral' bridge is - and can you tell if p/ups are US?
The first FS thread for this bass is shown below (showing the old s/p I replaced). Cardinaljay sold the bass to bythesea who sold it to me. In cardinaljay's FS post he stated that its alder, US vintage pickups etc. Short of me pulling the bass apart, which I will not do after a bad recent experience (I did this for a sale of a 51P and damaged the bass, leading to me having to take a cut on the price ), I don't think I can do more than suggest contacting the previous owners. To be honest, even if I looked in the neck cavity I'm not smart enough to tell the difference between alder and basswood. Apologies http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=cardinaljay Edit: having looked at the (now sadly defunct) Guitar Emporium website http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/index.php?...guitars&a=3 the standard basswood-bodied 62J fretted bass has standard J tuners while only the alder bodied 62J fretted has reverse tuners. The 62J fretless they list has alder body and reverse tuners. My bass also has reverse tuners and so this supports cardinaljay's statement that it too is alder, US pickups etc. Thats the best bit of detective work I can do, although I realise it doesn't amount to 100% proof. Incidentally Guitar Emporium was selling this model fretless for £949 at the time it ceased trading.
23.
Is the body Alder on these - or something more nondescript? Also, do you know the weight? cheers, JC
After scanning the internet, a couple of sources including this one say the 62 fretless has an alder body: http://www.gear-review.co.uk/reviews/jb62_77/index.html Weight on digital scales comes in at 9.7 lbs with covers on
