Very, very taken with your stuff Clarky.
Cheers matey, remind me where your neck of the woods is (its not shown below your avatar pic)?
2.
Now, to double the reasons for my qualifying as a sh1t player, where's me plectrum
Hey, Walman, I play a 4-string AND use a plectrum, what does that qualify me as?
3. Swamp/voodoo/blues/jazz/something-or-other band Rattlin Bone play Camden on Wednesday (link here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;#entry1037361) followed up by The Waverley in Bognor Regis on Saturday. For those on the South Coast who want to escape the X-Factor, we are onstage about 8.45pm. It will be a slimmed down version of the band (probably 7 or 8 piece down from 14!). Fish n chips and rock n roll, yeah baby
4. Based on that photo, if you'd said this was a new entry-level Far Eastern instrument (Ibanez, Aria etc) priced competitively for learners (say £125) I would not have been surprised.
5. Afraid I am completely shallow. Part of the reason I fell for the Pino was I love the faded fiesta red colour. I am one of the trad colour camp (sunburst/oly white/seafoam green/ sonic blue/fiesta red) and never been attracted to natural wood. For a rock/metal bass, though, gotta be black!
6.
I play a 5 all the time these days, and yes I use the B a lot. I haven't gigged a 4 for about 7 years now. I don't feel that one is necessarily better than the other, it's just what I personally want to use. I don't feel the need to justify my more-then-4 choice and if anyone wants to look down their nose at me, that's fine, go ahead. Whatever floats your boat. But the sad fact is that threads like this always end up as some sort of pissing contest, and to be honest it bores the life out of me. Life is too short for pointless snobbery, inverted or otherwise.
Its funny how perspective is, Rich. I read most of this thread as looking down the nose at 4-stringers like me! As you rightly intimate, different strokes for different folks
7.
Looks like there may be one in your signature already??
Why do you think it's for sale? Already have enough people shouting "that's bollox" at me before they even see my amp has one compressor knob ....
8.
Fantastic news about the money all going to charity. So when will we do the next one?
When we have all traded on our amps with one compressor knob
9. 4 all the players I most admire play 4 strings (Jamerson, Simonon, Martyn P Casey, Bernard Edwards, Willie Weeks, Burton, Jaco etc on electric, La Faro, Chambers etc on DB). In some cases maybe they would have used a 5 if one was available but it didn't stop them making a glorious noise
10. It all depends on the practicalities. IMHO a DB is more satisfying to play and sounds better, period. But if you have to cart it around frequently or on public transport or you have back issues etc an EUB is obviously a sensible alternative. The Aria I just sold (to obbm) is a pretty good value compromise and much better than a Stagg. But really good EUBs (Yamaha, Eminence, Volante etc) run to the same price as a good DB (up to a few grand). I think there are a few threads in this section of the forum on the different types of DB (laminate vs carved etc) and which ones are good for the money. For example, Gareth Hughes picked up a DB from Thomann which he is very happy with for under a grand. Perhaps PM him?
11. Sunday bumpy - looking for sale (preferably) or part-ex with Orange Terror Bass. Those who saw it at the BassBash yesterday (with the MB cab and Fender Pino next to it) will have seen it in mint condition
12. A huge thanks to Nik, Colin and co for working so hard to set this up and to those who gave teach-ins (compression was never so entertaining!). A good time was had by all! And as I understand a decent amount of money was raised for some worthwhile causes. RIP Old Git
13.
that Yogi Beedster pic is really quite disturbing...
you wanna try meeting him in real life
14.
I aspire to having a personal luthier.
Jack has a town luthier and a country luthier Here's a bump from me as I have briefly played this EUB and its very user-friendly PS, Owen, how DID you get your DB covered in lepoard spot? Its so cool
15.
How might one find one's first post?
Click on your profile Mrs T, then choose the drop-down option just below picture for 'Find members posts' then scroll to end In fact here is your first post Mrs T (there were a bunch of emoticons with the text that don't seem to want to copy/paste): "Hello You sure this isn't just a dummy site to get rid of me from Basstalk?"
16. Mine: "Hi, new forumite here. I have a Polytone MiniBrute 1 bass combo (with 12 inch speaker; metal grill) which I bought 10 years ago from the old Bass Centre in Wapping for £450 for use with a double bass. In the end I didn't get on with the double bass and the amp has been sat in my study for about 8 years unused (and never gigged). It is essentially as new without a scratch. Anyone any idea what its worth (Bass Gallery has had a s/h one for sale for £450 for quite a time now so its obviously less than that)? Any interest in it? I am based in central London. Cheers Clarky" Funny, as having re-discovered DB this amp would probably have saved me a load of money had I just hung on to it!
17.
Yes mate, bring it along & see what it does with the Big Juan.
Cool, will do Johnny.
18. Bump for our next gig, which is next Wednesday evening in Camden. We are onstage about 10pm. Cheers!
19. Marcus is a music student and new to the forum so not used to buying/selling here. However, I can confirm that he was great to deal with, clear in his communications and paid very promptly. Another trustworthy BC'er, which is nice! Hope you enjoy the Jazz bass, Marcus
20.
Innovation Honeys could do the job, I reckon. They're not incredibly low tension, but much looser feeling than most steel cored strings like Spirocores, and they're easy to get a decent bowed sound out of.
I happen to have a near-mint set for sale (see other thread in DB/EUB forum)
21. TGIF bump - if anyone wants to road-test this at SE BassBash tomorow I will bring it along instead of my MB combo
