2. Another vote for the chunkier P width neck, which I find much more hand friendly near the nut. Funnily enough the 2009 Jazz I have is closer to a P neck in feel than any of the ultra skinny 70s Jazz necks I have played (I went the vintage J route and just hated those skinny, bound necks). So maybe the newer MIA Jazzes are the happy medium ergonomically. sound wise it entirely depends on the type of music and context, Jazzes cut through better in my view whereas Ps sound better in the mix. horses for courses and I am happy owning one of each.
3. Not surprisingly, due to his impending broken leg operation, Happy Jack will not be coming along to the BassBash
4. Don't forget there's another 20% or so in taxes to go on top, though, which takes it to £430 and into BassChat price territory! Nice bass though
5. Eminence's reply to my question (via SMART distribution) about the finger noise on the 'A': 'Have your customer dampen the ringing strings between the bridge and tailplate. Cut of piece of foam about an 1.5"wide by 6" long, maybe an inch thick. Place the foam on top of the center 2 strings midway between the tailplate and the bridge. Then tuck the ends of the foam under the outside two strings. Once the player goes and gigs with the bass, he maybe happy to have the extra string attack. I've never had anyone come forth with this comment". I don't really see that I should have to stuff a piece of foam in the bass and I don't want extra string attack in one string only! So I don't find this reply that helpful, unfortunately, other than that hearing noone else has made this comment. I am hopeful that by replacing the strings and re-siting the bridge (as suggested above) and carefully siting the Realist pickup I can fix the issue without recourse to bits of foam.
6. Dire would be over-stating it! More a case of trying to cover what I've spent, having not exactly told Mrs Clarky how much it really cost Anyway PM'd back Chris
7.
Have you checked that the bridge is sitting perfectly flat on the pickup following your string change? I've found that as the new strings settle in, the bridge tilts fractionally and loses contact with the Realist pickup. I don't know about a popping noise but my Eminence certainly sounds very thin when this hapens.
Thanks for that, I will check this out tonight. I guess popping is over-stating it, its more that the finger plucking the string produces a percussive noise that is just about as loud as the note itself. Playing with the meat of the finger reduces this but if Ihave to play a fast passage, I have to use the fingertips to pluck and here it becomes problematic
8. I bought this about three months ago from BassDirect for £539 (http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/TC_Classic_450.html) and it is essentially unused. Never left my house and barely even plugged in as I have used my MarkBass combo exclusively for the last 1-2 months. Has all original packaging etc. It falls into the camp of nice to have, but even nicer to have the cash (due to recent splurge on Eminence EUB). I could post to you for £440, a saving of £100 from new. Or hit me with your best offer. Looks just like this:
9. Monday bump Deal for BCers I have previously dealt with - the Aria with Presto strings installed plus an old spare set of Thomastik strings (the silks are a bit chewed but this would be good as a backup set in case of breakages in a gig) and postage within Uk £500 all-in, or £480 collected. As I mentioned in OP, I will get the bass back next weekend so could hand over at BassBash or post the following week.
10. TBH, Musicman basses have never really tickled my fancy ... until I saw this Status-necked one from cd david's 'Black basses' post. Phwoar, its so black and shiny
11.
I bet you don't remember what I played on your Shuker.
'Karn Evil Nine' second movement by Emerson, Lake and Palmer
12.
OK, it's out now. Clarky played London Calling brilliantly on my fretless and, with me being a total t*s*e* (and slightly hard of hearing, of course), I failed to recognise it.
Oh bl**dy hell it was me doing the slide-y bit on your Tony Franklin, wasn't it? In nervy moments (like when surrounded by dozens of bass players who are better than me!) I fall back on a small stock repertoire of bass lines that I won't screw up, London Calling being one of them On topic, the other ultra-recognisable bass line from the Clash has to be 'The Magnificent Seven' (yep, thats in my embarrassed-nervous bass player repertoire too)
13.
Steady on! I can get a Persian rug if I want to.
Dave at his last gig PS, I think it was me playing London Calling at SE BassBash
14.
So, that's KEN by ELP? I expect it's a surprise, but that's another one with which I have only limited familiarity.
You need to play the bass line stood on a Persian rug while the keyboard player stabs his Moog with a knife. So I'm not altogether surprised its not part of your repertoire, Dave
15.
Hi Steve I'm pretty certain the body is Ash. The wear on the neck is actually minimal. There are a few small lacquer chips on the back and there is the wear on the G string side but that's about it and it's very smooth with no flaking at all. I had a 76 P bass before and it hadn't faired so well as this one.
As a third party, I can tell you Steve that its a lovely player. Nick brought the bass round to mine a few weeks ago and I had a quick noodle on it. Its light, mojo'd in a tasteful way, and an all-round cracking P bass.
16.
Its funny, because sometimes BC is becoming similar to Talkbass to my eyes - after a while, folks who come here to post 'a recognisable bassline', will post their favourite tunes instead, that have nothing to do with being easily recognisable..
Second movement of 'Karn Evil Nine' by Emerson, Lake and Palmer anyone?
17.
I wonder is putting a felt pad or a bit of tape between the A string and the bridge might take the edge of the harshness?
Thanks for suggestion mate! I tried a bit of bridge foam between string and bridge but no difference. Think I will wait until I try a whole set of Silver Slaps before fiddling further. Played along to Rattlin Bone CD this afternoon and the Eminence felt great (so it should be nicer still with Silver Slaps), just need to sort this slight niggle out.
18. HE AINT NEVER BOUGHT NUFFINK FROM ME, INNIT. BLOODY CRAP SITE. WHERE'S THE FISH?
19. I once tried Weedwackers (the cheap ones off eBay). After several weeks they were still stretching and going horribly flat each time I picked up the bass, and like an above poster said, I swapped the E and A for Innovations (Blacks, I think?) as there was no sustain or volume with them, just a percussive dull thud. That said, I have heard there are better quality Weedwacker-types that solve these problems (I assume the prior post is referring to these, Lamberts).
20. Well, I just swapped the 'A' temporarily for a Silver Slap 'A' from my DB (and added the cushioning felt pad between string ball end and tail piece) and there was no discernible difference, so I guess I am just going to have to play around with amp/EQ settings until I fix the problem. It did, though, reinforce that I prefer the (even) lower-tension feel of Silver Slaps so I will definitely swap the strings over later this week.
21. Thanks Chris. On family duty now but will try swapping over for a different A (Helicore or Thomastik Superflexible) later today and see if its sorts the problem. Its not horrendous but it is a bit annoying and only happens on the A so it sorta gets my goat! Has also occurred to me that the Helicores came with felt pads at the end of the strings which cushioned the brass ball-end against the metal tail-piece ... so maybe I should try installing the felt pad on the A as well?
22.
Have you tried replacing the supplied A string?
It is a replacement, it came stock with D'Addario Helicores which are too taut for my liking, so I swapped over for a set of Innovation Honeys last night. TBH, I think I prefer Silver Slaps to Honeys (even lower tension) so I will probably swap over again in the next week or so. I am just concerned that there's an issue with certain frequencies with the new bass/pickup. Do you think I should try swapping back the Helicore A as an experiment?
23. Been playing my new Eminence EUB today. With the Platinum Pro EQ I can get it sounding amazingly DB-like when amplified. One small problem though - the D and G strings sound superb and the E nearly as clear (its fractionally muddier), but the A seems to be picking up excessive amounts of finger noise, resulting in a popping type noise that becomes intrusive if you have to play faster pizzicato bits on the A. Is this the string (Innovation Honey), the interaction with the string/bridge/pickup (David Gage Realist), or perhaps the action (whch I have set quite low; albeit I tried raising it and there wasn't any real difference)? Any thoughts gratefully received. Cheers Clarky
24.
Hey Clarky, standing on the right - or maybe it's the one in the middle - is Chris White, Zombie bass player: EDIT: It is the one in the middle.
I look better for the laser eye surgery
