At last, a genuinely rare & vintage bass
Clarky replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
If anyone's interested in getting an Ampeg Scroll Bass. I'd recommend getting in touch with the Bass Gallery and asking if the Bruce Johnson AUB-2 is still available.
It was there when I last went in (a couple of weeks ago). Its very nice but pricey for a replica, even if hand made -

I bought this recently from Beedster but have decided to go with a posher, acoustic EUB (an Eminence). Its in pretty good condition overall (the only minor niggle is the removable side bout can work its way loose but I imagine its an easy fix, I've just been too lazy to do so) and I have upgraded it with the addition of super-nice, low tension Presto nylonwound (synthetic gut) strings - these cost £100-odd new (http://presto-strings.com/doublebass.html). Comes with decent gig-bag. I am after £500. Please note there is another Aria EUB for sale on the forum (from mykesbass) but that is the newer SWB Lite model with the extra magnetic pickup, hence that bass' higher price. Finally, this is currently on loan to another BCer (who wanted to try out an EUB) but I should get it back in time for the BassBash (27th) and I can bring it along to that for handover if it suits a prospective buyer. Looks just like this: And here is the Aria specs page: http://www.ariaguitars.com/int/03_products...wb_liteone.html
I know nothing about Ampeg basses and their value but I must admit I had to double take when I saw how much it was listed for.
Hey Tim, thought you would be a fan of the Ampeg scroll bass, given its huge Rick Danko associations. See pic below -
Just sold Donald my 51 P bass. Lovely chap and another in the list of BCers I would happily recommend to do biz with! Hope you enjoy the bass Donny

Anyone selling a Kolstein travel bass or Eminence?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thx GB. I have ordered the removable neck Eminence 4. To be honest, I don't actually expect to remove the neck all that often but there is a possibility that my new band will have weekend gigs on the Continent (and in Scotland!) which will require flying - on the strength of the MySpace stuff, we have been offered a 4-date tour of Portugal, which we have had to decline (too many of us have day jobs, me included) but we may do Saturday gigs abroad, depending on money etc. So for an extra £200-odd I thought I may as well have the opportunity to make this as portable and user-friendly as possible. After all, if I am only travelling locally I can always use my full-size DB. Now I need someone to buy my Aria SWB! -
Hey Clarky - If it's at all possible and makes things easier - you're welcome to come over and try my Eminence out to see how good they really can play. If you can make it to Belfast City Airport, there's a studio about 15 minutes drive away that I could have for an afternoon and bring down my Markbass/Epifani/Genz Benz gear for you to try everything through. Scrumptous food for thought.
Thats very kind Gareth but I have spent hours now watching Youtube clips and doing more research and am pretty sure that it will be right for me (likewise the more expensive but much rarer Kolstein, which I think I will have to disregard). This is a real last minute call as I am going to make a decision this afternoon! I will probably order a new one from SMART as the one in the Gallery just isn't that much cheaper to entice me - plus I can get Gary Bartig to check over my one to my satisfactin before it flies over. -

Last call before I either buy the Eminence at the Gallery or pay up a bit more for a new Eminence? -
South East Bass Bash Year 4, Surrey, 27th November 2010
Clarky replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
Hi Nik, could you please amend the gear I will be bringing to: Fender CS Pino and MarkBass CMD121P Thx, Clarky -
Until we ran into the "drummer quits" problem this summer, my punk band was struggling for gigs (were doing c.20 a year previously and our run rate was half this in 2010). The turnouts were appalling. At one gig, the three of us (and our other halves) were the entire audience for the headline act we supported (a reasonably well known punk act with 70s credentials). We never got paid. Best we ever got was petrol money or free drinks. My new band will probably only do 10-15 gigs a year as we are so geographically disparate (South Coast, London, Scotland) but they will be paying (mind you there's 14 of us so it amounts to not much each!).

It's not launched in the UK yet so the only ones who could have tried it would be those attending trade shows or nonUK BCers if it's already launched elsewhere. Looks incredibly well spec'd for the £375 indicated UK price (eg at DV247)

Going to give an answer that will not please all (!) - I ended up a bass player as I was too sh*t on guitar for my teen band and 4 strings seemed easier than six

It's no good. I tried to play this bass for a few songs this evening with a very broad, thick leather Minotaur strap and it's just too uncomfortable for my shoulders /back. So regrettably it's up for sale again. This time I am shaving £100 off my outlay and calling it £1300 posted. If 11 pounds in weight doesn't bother you this is a great deal. Reminder pics of my bass and Cliff Burton with same model. If £1300 cash is not available to an interested party (or a straight swap with an Eminence upright bass), I might do as I have done before ... which is to trade against a decent quality Fender-shaped bass that I should be able to move on without too much difficulty and that I could happily live with if it took a bit of time (eg, sunburst, sonic blue, seafoam green Fender CS, Sadowsky etc) I appreciate this is a bit of a 'special interest' item (for Metallica geeks, like me, or Alembic fans of which BC does not have an overwhelming number) so I have also put it on eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=130454200107 Happy, as ever, to pull the listing early if a BC'er wants this (assuming there are no bids at that point)

Sold Will some black nylon strings - as others above have repeatedly said, all good!

Just bought a beautiful fretless Fender Jazz from Brian. Super-easy transaction, we agreed deal Tuesday and two days later I have the bass and he has the funds - couldn't be better. Bass was well packed and is exactly as described. Brian was a gent to deal with and I recommend him to other BC'ers

Additional incoming fretless porn (CIJ 62RI Fender Jazz) - bought from bythesea (aka Brian) but pics courtesy of previous FS thread (cardinaljay's; thanks!)

I use these on all my basses as does Happy Jack. I have posted about the merits of these before and been the subject of much derision! Apparently its way cooler to either move you belt buckle out of the way, tuck you shirt over you belt, or alternatively scuff up your bass and I am a nerd for paying the princely sum of £15 odd quid to protect a bass costing over a grand

People who buy the latest stuff then flog it 3 months later

Unfortunately my several pages of feedback on BC speaks volumes Most recently I went for the TC hype and bought a TC 450 Classic head for £540. Its a good head but doesn't quite do it for me (I think an Orange Bass Terror would be better for my meat-and-potatoes bass playing and musical tastes). However, I've seen people struggling to sell nearly-new TC heads on BC for £400-ish and I just can't face taking a big hit again! (Unless someone wants to trade ) -
As a newbie I am discovering that each type/model of DB suits certain strings better. I have Silver Slaps on my DB, having found Thomastik Superflexibles a bit too tense for my liking. I tried an E from a set of Innovation Honeys on my DB last weekend just to compare with the Silver Slaps and found it less easy to play, not dissimilar from the Thomastiks. As I posted elsewhere, the Eminence EUB at the Gallery is strung with Spirocores and I found it played horribly - yet there are loads of Eminence devotees who say that its superb with different strings (eg, Kolstein Heritage). Given DB strings are typically £75-100+ a set (over £200 for Garbos!) this makes finding the right set-up bl**dy expensive ...

Martyn P Casey (The Bad Seeds) - simple and melodic Paul Simonon - nuff said Can't think of a third that influences me as such. Loads I admire across a range of genres (eg, the Metallica boys, Scott LaFaro, Robbie Shakespeare, Jamerson)
