After an embarrassing amount of buying and selling I have finally worked out what I want and need. Between these three basses I have passive retro/motown thump through to bright-sounding modern rock covered. 1. A lovely flatwound-wearing Fender Precision (in this case a 2005 CS Pino Palladino model which I have long coveted and recently acquired from BC'er Legion). Yes, Beedster, I have moved on my 73P back to original owner Chris Kelly so you will never speak to me again! 2. A nice maple-necked Fender Jazz without binding/blocks and heavily lacquered neck (which I just don't like, as I discovered when I went down the vintage route). I now have a nice oly white 2009 MIA one (which I was the original owner of, before I sold it on a vintage quest, but have managed to buy back) 3. Ahem, sold it! Replaced with fretless Jazz which can be seen a few posts down Anyway, enough guff, here's the porn pics:

I bought this only a few weeks ago from Grand Wazoo who keeps his basses in minty condition. I got it thinking it might be useful in my retro band Rattlin Bone in which I play DB. In the event, although it was useful for our first rehearsal (when I had just suffered a broken hand and couldn't use the DB) I am recovering and I cannot really see me using it (I will be using DB only for Rattlin Bone from now on and I have my Fender Pino for rocking out). Plus I am thinking of upgrading my EUB from an Aria to an Eminence and so the cash would be useful! Its a 2009 (I think) 2TS Crafted in Japan '51 Precision reissue (this range has been discontinued), which GW modded by adding a custom Jason Lollar pickup (higher output than the stock 51P pickup). I paid £450 for it, and have since modded it by adding Fender chrome covers (around £25), an ebony finger rest (£9), chunky LaBella black nylon flatwound strings (50-110 IIRC; £25). I have also bought an electrosocket jack socket replacement (£12) which I haven't got around to installing as my still-healing left hand has precluded using a soldering iron (50s Ps and Telecasters have a habit of losing the jack socket and this is the standard replacement and does not interfere with the looks at all). All-in its cost me just over £520. It weighs 9.8 pounds so its certainly not a lightweight but it hardly qualifies as a heavyweight (my Alembic weighs 11 pounds by comparison). Comes in a padded Fender gig bag. Please note: that I slightly damaged the finish on this bass when I removed the covers for a potential buyer (see fifth post below with picture) as the screws coming out flaked some of the varnish . For this reason I have cut the asking price to £460 (from £499) posted 48-hour service or £450 (was £490) collected (from central London). Chris Squire - Would he have been better as a reader?
Clarky replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
If he could read, Chris Squier surely wouldn't have mis-spelled his surname -
Amazing to think he played keyboards for Barclay James Harvest in the 70s. He looks so young still

Another should I leave my band thread?
sounds like you and the drummer should split and try to find another guitarist who isnt an idiot ( might take a bit of time though )
+1 Once resentment sets in, its difficult to shake off and the fun of being in the band will never be the same -
Have to say, love the retro look of these

Weren't the cutaways popular with rockabilly slappers? So may be it allows you to slap higher up the board rather than change to thumb position ?

Congrats mate. Absolute rock machine! Gotta call it Phil ...

I am back using Pyramid Golds as they have higher tension than TIs and feel immediately worn in and smooth. The E string is a lottery tone-wise though as I have had a couple of dead ones

I am withdrawing this from sale as - having had a session on it again yesterday evening - it plays so beautifully and sounds so good. The weight remains a serious issue but I am going to persevere with a more supportive strap. I will also keep an eye open for a lighter, early 80s lookalike - if one should come along (albeit they rarely do) I will buy that one and put this bass up FS again.
Hey mate how was the DB tone, and how was your Fishman Pro eq set? Have mirrored your set up with Plat pro and pickup and am getting some good tones through a PA I set up in one of my spare rooms, but would be interested to see how you've set up.
Well I had no feedback problems as a result of the Fishman, which was a positive, and there was really good 'projection' of the bass sound. I would say I got an OK tone (quite rich but not quite capturing that acoustic 'buzz'). I am sure I could have done tons better if we hadn't been so rushed in our soundcheck. We were second to s/c and the poncey gypsy jazz bunch before us took an hour or more, meaning we had barely any time if we were to be fair to the other bands lined up to soundcheck. Of course by the time all 14 (or was it 15?) of us were in full swing, I doubt anyone would have noticed the difference if I was playing an electric bass! Overall, for my first gig I was pretty pleased with the tone and especially pleased that it was good enough to help drive a large band along.
That's the BDSM.
Very kind but I think my doc would give me the CSA - crass stupidity award!

Never had a problem with taking one passive Fender bass to a gig (P or J) When I have brought my (heavy) active Alembic to a gig I have always ensured I have a screwdriver and spare battery close to hand but was still happy to have no back-up

First gig with new band Rattlin Bone last night at The Miller near London Bridge. Fantastic evening (lots of burlesque, circus showpeople, Halloween dressing up etc) and my first gig on DB. Here's a pic or two. You can't even see the horn section who are left of stage. There were 15 of us in total!

And here I am zombified at the gig (it was a Halloween horror-fest)
