Sorry Barrie, you have some lovely basses - but that is just like a posh version of having 'go faster' stripes on a car. OTT as far as I am concerned. Plus if you play that bass you will develop an unaccountable urge to double thumb, and the gaps between your front teeth will widen -
My newest arrival (with apologies to Legion for nicking his photo). Fender CS Pino, made in December 2005 (must have been one of the first as they were officially launched in Jan '06). Flippin' eck its lovely
Yeah no worries, search has started but will wait a while to see what comes up in the s/h market etc. and do some pricing up.
Several of the DB'ers on BC seem to have multiple pickups in their armamentarium (good word that) so I would start an Items Wanted search on BassChat before looking externally as you'll probably pick up something at a decent price. My Shadow would have been £140 new (a Realist is £175 new, BTW) so I saved nearly 40% by buying s/h. Not so sure you would get a Fishman Platinum though as they are rarely sold and when they do come up FS they seem to disappear faster than a whippet.

My setup seems to work but there's tons of other BC'ers with direct DB gigging experience so I would await their replies too. I know BurritoBass uses an Underwood direct to PA, usually, and jakesbass uses a David Gage Realist (the one that fits under the feet of the bridge). There's lots of different views on pickups (and mikes too). Most seem to like the Fishman Platinum Pro-EQ preamp though.
I'm pretty sure the Fishman preamp was what Jake showed me when I was demonstrating my complete and utter lack of skill on the thing!! Which pickups you using and how much did you pay for all this little lot (not amp). Cheers
As i couldn't find a s/h one, I got a new Fishman Platinum from Thomann for £139 http://www.thomann.de/gb/fishman_proeq_platinum_bass.htm and a s/h Shadow SH950 pickup on BassChat for £100 http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...3&hl=Shadow

My 2p. Get piezo pickups that sit in the bridge wings (Underwood or Shadow) so can easily be installed or removed if necessary. Then a Fishman Platinum Pro preamp (which you can use to cut out the feedback and shapes the sound). Bingo! Thats what I have, into a MarkBass CMD121P combo. To be fair I haven't gigged it yet (and will not do any time soon due to left hand accident) but BC DB-er supreme, jakesbass, has had a play around on my DB and rig and seemed to think it would do the trick.

Making a Precision sound as double bass-ish as possible
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
You’ll never sound like a double bass but you can sound less like a bass guitar if you turn to full bass, play nearer the neck and take some top off the amp. If you want to kill the sound some more try some foam under the strings, but I don't think foam really works in live situations, unless you’re DI’ing. Your hand problems are only temporary so I wouldn't spend any money on this.
Thanks Chris. I tried the foam mute idea on Sunday and didn't think it made any real difference on the E and A and just muffled the D and G, so I wasn't bowled over (hence me posting this thread today). As I am lucky enough to own more than one P-bass I am going to try some La Bella nylon tapewounds on my 51RI Precision (£28 at Stringbusters). If it doesn't suit, I can always sell the strings on BassChat and my total outlay will be less than half of Mrs C's latest driving ticket! -
Sam bought my Wal. Paid immediately and very friendly communications. Another recommended BC'er!
Here's a curveball for ya... Have you got a J at the moment? (I can never keep up with you ) If so, roll the tone off, favour the bridge pickup and play right over the neck. As DB-ish as it's possible to get! A little trick I learned from The Bass Doc.
Thanks WoT, I may have a Jazz incoming by coincidence (!) so I will give that a try. Also Beedster, I just googled and found that LaBellas do the nylon tapewounds that I think I was referring to in OP - my bad, mate! I assumed Deep Talkers were just 'ordinary' metal flats. As for my "deader" comment, it was my hamfisted way of saying less bright/ringing. -
La Bella Deep Talkers mate
I already have Pyramid Gold Flats which sound 'deader' than LaBellas to my ears but still not that DB-ish. I think it was some kind of nylon tapewound strings that I have a recollection of. -
Given my knackered left hand I will be using my Fender Precision for the first couple of gigs in my new band, rather than the DB. Does anyone have any recommendations for strings to make my P-bass sound as DB-ish as possible? I have tried Trubass strings in the past in the past but TBH found them very thick and unwieldy. IIRC, however, there is another set of black strings that are easier to play and sound quite DB-ish - can anyone tell me what they are - or alternatively recommend something else? Obviously I can also stick some foam under the strings by the bridge if needs be (as I did at our rehearsal on Sunday). Thanks gents and ladies

Well the Fracture clinic took more x-rays this morning and there has been no movement/displacement of the fractures (despite my rehearsal y'day which I of course omitted to mention!) so all on track. Prognosis is 4 weeks recovery time for finger and 6 weeks for the hand bone (metacarpal). Apparently I am not to play DB in that period ... they didn't mention electric bass though

Listen to this for absolutely the most beautiful DB

'Waltz for Debbie' by the Bill Evans trio with the fabulous Scott LaFaro on DB - see two posts down
If it's what I think it is Jase, you should be a happy bunny!
Simples Chris, I bought his Fender Pino

Thank all for the good wishes Update: I managed a 3-hour rehearsal with the new band this afternoon using an electric bass (my lovely new Fender Pino, yummy) and two fingers! Took some forethought for several tracks but it was do-able and I even got commended at the end for "holding the band together". So I passed the test and now I can rest the hand for a few days. And another first, I did the rehearsal finger-style, having previously been a pick only player. Just that short time playing DB has obviously increased my right hand strength significantly (no lewd comments!).

Jas (finally!) sold me his Fender Pino, the bass I have long coveted. He even drove down from Suffolk to London to deliver it, and before the money had cleared. We had a nice chat too over a coffee. Top bloke, as others have said

Gareth collected my Barefaced Vintage cab today. Lovely smooth transaction and friendly guy. Another successful BassChat trade and happy to recommend Gareth!
Here are the rest of the photos: http://tinypic.com/a/20ggy/3 These were taken just after I bought the bass from Silverfoxnik, so it still had the "wrong" knobs fitted. Paul Herman did a complete overhaul of the bass for me, especially the electrics and electronics, and it came back to me in pretty much 'as new' condition. I haven't played many Wals so I'd best not gush, but this is a very VERY competent bass - far better than me! I hadn't planned to sell it, but I received an offer I couldn't refuse.
Thx Jack, much appreciated. The photos are second only to lysdexia's
