Agreed on Gus basses, they try too hard to be different in my view but end up looking like a "futuristic" guitar from a bad 1970s/80s sci fi film. And Enfield basses - what's with the fugly massive pickup?

Bump and all change! After further consideration I have decided I to keep the Barefaced cab ( after all an Epifani UL310, which is what I was thinking of getting instead, weighs more!) and just sell the Orange amp. OP edited to match. So does anyone want some British valvey-y goodness? Weighty, yes, although entirely manageable for the strapping among you ... and nothing like as heavy as an Ampeg SVT (although I realise that Ampeg is the pinnacle of all things bass-like, lol!)

FS/ Fender Custom Shop 64 Jazz Bass Relic Limited Edition

Stacker has a couple of Nash J's, both of which used to belong to me. Very good quality basses, sound fabulous, extremely well put together and the relic'ing is quite authentic looking. My only gripe is they don't try hard enough with the fingerboard - white plastic dot markers (clay would have been better or at least creamy 'aged' looking plastic) and the rosewood could have been darker. Great basses though and there's an increasing number of well known users (eg Guy Pratt, Rob Trujillo [Metallica])
Sadowsky gear is also made in a different way, and isn't the best comparison really. As i said earlier the Empire gear is fairly comparable to the Sadowsky models, and seems similarly priced. It'd be interesting to compare the Fodera list against Ken Smith and Alembic pricing, as they are other big names in a similar vain.
Top of the range Alembics are typically in the $10-15,000 range (see link here for Bass Central's inventory http://www.basscentral.com/alembicbass/mar...shtml#6strings). Alembic only emplys 26 people and virtually everything is custom-made but they don't run anywhere near the high end of Fodera pricing.

Major edit (as have reconsidered and decided to keep Barefaced cab): OK, mistake (not for the first time)! In a fit of rockgod enthusiasm I bought Tee's Orange AD200B amp at the end of June. Basically its too heavy (just over 50 lb) for my dodgy back. I bought a TC 450 Classic head as back-up for the Orange and TBH it does a pretty good copy of tubey-ness so I am going back to a lightweight rig. Call me a wuss, Wayne! Hence I am moving this on. £750 for this lovely warm sounding Orange amp (perfect nick bar one metal rivet on one corner) Due to size/weight its collection/meet-up only in London (I am near hammersmith)

Makes the one FS on BassChat look positively bargain basement You can buy a whole Fodera bass on BC for the same price as an aluminium bridge, truss rod and back plate cover!!!!

3-tone sunburst Fenders just sound better: Discuss

The only wood to come close in resonance and sheer musicality is the 1,800 year old bog wood* used by Ritter * I'll sell any one my bog for three grand -

Any bass made in the Year of Clarky ('63) will sound superior. Fact PS. Stop being a tease Chris and get some pics up in Gear Porn -
Both well worth keeping for that very same reasons. Just to clarify so the Mods don't shoot me down, i listed the basses with no intention of starting an auction or owt, just so people could see I've not got the easiest of decisions, should I go on with the plan.
"get yer luvly basses ére, two for a pahnd.
I love Metallica, but what the hell is with the low volumes of bass on the albums?! It seems to have got worse, but AJFA was just plain daft!
Apparently Hetfield and Ulrich deliberately mixed down the bass on AJFA as some sort of mean trick on Newsted although some say it was because they were still grieving for Cliff Burton. I think the former is probably closer to the mark as they made Newsted go through all sorts of unpleasant initiation rituals according to a biography I read. Makes me laugh that there's a bass tab book for AJFA as I really can't hear ANY bass on the album! From the Black Album onwards though I can hear the bass perfectly well, especially the aforementioned as the Alembic cuts through (Newsted switched to Sadowskys in the mid 90s)
