"Sid" for sale - mojo'd, Simenon-alike 70RI Precision
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in Basses For Sale
Is that the bass you bought to my place a couple of years back Clarky? If so, it is a stunner, lovely tone and plays like butter, just how a Precision should be. It's a hell of a lot of bass for the money for sure. Good decision on playing the '72 more by the way. C
It is the very same bass, Chris. At last, a decision you approve of -

I bought back my punk bass "Sid" a few months back but, my soul-searching about getting the most out of my basses (especially my 72P) leads me to put this up FS. Two reasons: (1) I use Sid for most gigs and practices, and I need to stop being so precious and use my 72P way more; and (2) I am frankly a bit bored of white Precisions, especially when at virtually every punk gig I play nearly every band has a white P bass! Sid itself is 70 reissue CIJ bass of mid-90s heritage with two mods - a Badass bridge and vintage cream DiMarzio pickup for Clash-alike appearance (and very thumpy, woody sound - not for fans of treble-y, hi-fi bass!). Its become very cream-coloured with time and its got a fair few dings which only add to its appeal IMHO. The board is a deep dark rosewood and plays very smoothly with Pyramid Gold flatwound strings. Its a B width neck, so in between a P and a J neck width-wise, and very comfy in the hand. One pic below and a bunch more pics here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=88024&hl I am all out of shipping boxes (and patience waiting in all day for Interparcel from the lovely Mrs C!) and it only has a thin gigbag, so would prefer meet in London. £330 sounds about right to me. This is a cracking bass but I need to get my 72P out and played.
Clarkey, stand in front of Mrs C, bollocko, with the P bass, then the AC bass and ask her which she prefers.
The answer will be Johnny Depp
Personally I’d sell the kids for medical experiments.
Ah, you've met them then, Chris?

Based on my extraordinarily scientific poll http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=100837&hl= most of you think I should keep my 72 P-bass over this. I will keep this FS for a few days and then withdraw it if no interest - which in truth will not be too much of a hardship as its the best-playing bass I own!

In response to the last three posts, therein lies my dichotomy as the AC is the better playing bass and has a broad range of usable tones that go beyond classic P. What it lacks is the 'aspiration factor' of a vintage Fender (and the investment attractions thereof) that most of the earlier replies allude to. Conclusion is probably to keep both!

OK gents, fairly clear message here. It's keep the 72p at all costs. Pretty much where I had started from but really helpful to hear your thoughts. Thanks
If old Fenders weren't 'collectible' (and therefore didn't have the inflated price tags) which one would you keep?
Probably the AC - its a better bass

Thunderbird - wanted to love it and had wanted one for years - found skinny long neck and raised central body section made it really hard to play SG bass - looks so cool but clunky neck and short scale made it play like sh*t

I have been musing recently about which of my two Ps I prefer: the '72 Precision or my Alleva-Coppolo Willie Weeks that I have had FS this weekend. Its one of the reasons I put up a thread about the long-term investment attractions of boutique basses vs Fenders. I am wondering if - in the pursuit of all things Fender - maybe I am selling the wrong one? Wondered what you guys think (I know the likes of WoT and Beedster will refuse to speak to me if I sold the Fender!) The pros of each are as follows: Fender 72P - its really light (not much more than 8lb), its a 'classic' instrument, there's lovely 'real' (not OTT) relicing on a beautiful sunburst body, its resonant, plays well, and I think its likely to be a very good long-term investment Alleva WW - unique instrument, great provenance (played by WW himself on Clapton tour), superb materials (eg DN fretboard), beautifully made and better put together (vs Fender), broader range of tonal capabilities (passive and active with great preamp), plays even better than the Fender Of course I could keep both, although it would mean (with my twisted way of thinking) probably storing one in its case as I like to concentrate on one bass at a time. Selling one would though release cash, allowing me to buy a different type of bass or simply pay some household bills
Presumably it outputs the same level as amp inputs, could you not stick a simple DI box in front of it? Another box to carry around but most small venues have them for bass anyway.
I have a DI box for precisely this reason but it would have been simpler to have it all wrapped into one, space-saving pedal

"Ask not what your sansamp can do for you - ask what you can do for your sansamp" Sorry, couldn't help myself Damn useful piece of kit, though, a sansamp. Just wish my VT Bass pedal had the new XLR out ...

Looks like DiMarzio cream coloured superJazz pickups and an East pre to me. Also the bass looks familiar - I think it may be a BCers bass

OK, the bass I was looking at buying has sold. I will keep this up FS for a few more days and then withdraw if no interest. Could be persuaded to trade for a nice 5-string Alembic or Alleva or a super-special 4-string Alembic/Alleva/Celinder (as long as it didn't encroach on what my 72 Precision offers me)

Life is all about priorities. I stayed away from music from my 20s until my early 40s and now I love it again (helps that my kids are pretty independent now and that my career is reasonably settled). You can always come back to it mate! Good luck in between times
Fair point Clarky. I reckon you should sell them all and buy that '63 Precision that's been bugging you for years. It's a good time to buy stuff, and although the buyers' market will reflect on the price you get for your basses, the overall saving, especially in the context of the long-term investment, would make it worthwhile (i.e., you're buying more than you're selling). Pity you weren't born in '64, I might have been able to help you out! Cheers mate C
Actually Chris I have lost my buzz for a 63 fender as I don't see that it could be any nicer playing than my 72p, and it would cost an arm and a leg more. I am very happy to stick with that bass and my Alembic as my two 'core' basses with Sid for the gritty gigs and practices. So there is a reasonably argument to me to simply sell the Willie Weeks, release some cash and thin the herd, rather than rush out and buy another bass. But then I am OCD as you know
Just been on to my legal team who've informed me that the Freedom of Information Act is applicable in this situation, so come on Clarky, spill the beans before I have to get Legal onto it
To be honest Chris I keep prevaricating between buying another bass (sorry but it may be Jazz shaped, legion, although people are allowed to change their minds, as you know!) or just selling this to release some welcome cash (my son was 18 last week and that was not a cheap experience - have you tried insuring an 18 year old to drive?) Either way I am not up for trades unless it's something very special

I have decided to put this back up FS as there is something else I have my eye on and I cannot afford it unless I sell this or my 72 Precision - and my 72 Precision is a keeper. If the other bass sells, I will withdraw this from sale So £2600 for a slice of provenance and a unique boutique-built bass
