1.
Please no comments re 'told you so'
As long as you promise the same to me! But seriously, I know you searched for your month-of-birth Precision for years so this must be a real wrench. Have a bump from me, mate and hope this works out.
2.
Yes, how lucky is that! Call/PM me mate C
PM'd Chris!
3. If so please PM me Once back from hols, am planning to have another go at resuscitating my attempts on my dust-covered DB - I filed down the bridge slots on mine earlier this year to make the action less horrendous .... but went too far on the A string which now buzzes too much. Hence an adjustable bridge should be a good solution (I hope)
4. Absolutely with Toasted on this - thats a truly gorgeous bass, please don't mod it!
5. Bump in case you didn't see the post above regarding trade options as a quasi-cash solution
6. Another bump from hols! As I recently had a very unpleasant tax demand I am really after cash but would consider a trade against something that I could potentially sell on (or at least, if it didn't sell quickly, I would enjoy playing inbetween times until it did sell). Given I like Fenders and their derivatives and Alembics it doesn't mean many possibilities but there's no harm in trying me (an Alembic or Sadowsky 5'er [with relatively narrow string spacing] would be good or a vintage Precision with maple neck [already got a lovely one with rosewood] or a Nash)
7.
I'm sorry Clarky, but WHAT? You're going to play a punk gig on an Alembic? I'll be sure to light a candle for you at the Sid Vicious Shrine & Souvenir Shop ...
Was thinking of borrowing your smoking jacket and cravat for the gig too, Jack
8.
Gonna use the Willie Weeks - go on, you know you want to. . .
Wouldn't dare Barrie Think the stealth black Alembic may get its first punk gig airing - not sure the audience will spot that its not a regulation Fender, plus its slightly dinged already so I'm not antsy about it getting knocked around
9. Hi all - Kismetik are on mid-evening at the annual Gosport Punkfest on Saturday 21st August, down on the South Coast. Classic original punks the UK Subs are headlining (remember 'Stranglehold', 'Down on the farm' etc). The event takes place at the Gosport Rugby Club and other bands include Night of Treason, Trash Cat, Refuse All, DJ Vinnie Void, plus others Would be good if any South Coast BC'ers could pop along and I could [s]bribe them with[/s] buy them a beer!
10. Great looking bass - nice work Wes! No spare spondoolies at present though (looking to raisemoney me'self from sales )
11. One bass only (72P for OK venues, Sid for skankier ones [most of our gigs!]) - any more starts to look un-punk! When I join a prog band, of course, things will be different
12.
TTD's original bassist was Cass Lewis, subsequently of Skunk Anansie. If it was him I'd be suitably impressed.
Blimey, didn't know that! It was quite modded - Badass, two EMG active pickups - but played really well. Sold it for peanuts on eBay as I wanted a Precision and modded 80s Fenders were not fetching much at that time
13.
Calling Clarky
Hi Barrie! Yep, my (molan's old) Alleva-Coppolo Willie Weeks was played on the 2009 Eric Clapton tour by the great WW .... he of Donny Hathaway's classic live album and the (debatably-greatest ever) bass solo, on "Voices Inside (everything is everything" Unfortunately due to an unexpected Spanish tax demand of dubious legality/morals (on the part of the authorities that is) I have to sell this bass, as its the most valuable one I own by a long way (link below) Edit: 10 years ago I owned a Fender 80s black/maple Jazz that was previously owned by Terence Trent Darby's player, or so I was told by Macari's on Charing Cross Road. Bit of a comedown from Willie Weeks, no offence TTD's bass player!
14.
It's not a 1.75" neck - I only have a ratty tape measure but it looks like a stock J width of 1.5" to me. Definitely narrower than the Fodera I have sitting next to it & that's a 1.625". It is quite rounded in shape though, definitely not as skinny as my, anorexic, '78J bass. I'm really no expert on J bass neck shapes but I'd say this slightly chunkier neck would be typical of the '63 it's supposed to represent?
Clarky checking in! To begin with I was sure it was a P width neck, in part as the BassDirect ad mentioned 1.625 dimensions IIRC and I never measured it. I later worked out that it was the depth of the neck that made it feel P-like, rather than the nut width. It is rounded and chunky and will feel very comfortable to a Precision player, less so to someone who likes ultra-skinny Jazz necks (eg, for example, a Fender Geddy Lee). Lovely bass this
15. FYI, this is the FS page of the guy that sold it to Barrie/molan, a US player called Ryan Owens who purchased after Willie Weeks had used it on the 2009 Clapton tour. He has loads of detailed pics on here and, as far as I can tell, its in identical condition now (I have not gigged it and I'm not sure molan ever did) http://www.ryanowens.net/ Click on the 'For sale' page to take you there If memory serves me correctly its about 9 lb in weight but I will weigh the bass electronically when I return from the Far East in a week or so's time Incidentally it does not come with an AC gigbag/case as they don't supply them - it will come instead in an as-new, top-of-range Ritter bag that molan supplied the bass with, including the additional spare creamy white pickguard referred to in Ryan Owens' FS page (this fits slightly better but does not look anything like as cool as the tort guard its wearing, IMHO)
16. Looking to move on my recently-acquired AC Willie Weeks. Its not that it isn't a beautiful bass (it absolutely is) with superb sounds (great AC pre-amp) and amazing provenance (WW on 2008/9 Clapton tour!) ... its more that I am looking set to be in need of moolah ... and this is the most valuable bass I own by a factor of nearly two. It was valued at 2600 quid by Barrie/Molan when he sold it to me, although as its a prototype and unique it arguably could have been valued higher than this (I am sure most of you know that AC prices, for example at BassGear, are generally higher than this). I am thinking about selling for the same price, ie 2600. Anyone buying would have to be comfortable with a classic P-width neck (its definitely not for a skinny J-neck fan). Furthermore please note it has a few small nicks here and there, as its a nitro finish and has been toured, and that the finish around the neck pocket had obviously been cracked and carefully re-glued (you can see this in pics on my link) - its a used bass, not a new one! It is strung with Bootsy DR strings (hence avatar!) and is super-slick playing. For photos, please click on the link in my sig below (position your mouse pointer on the words 'A-C Willie Weeks' and it should take you to the Gear Porn page) and you should see some not-great pics taken on a dreary day. No trade offers please (unles its jazzyvee's black Alembic 5 string Elan/Europa!), just cash. Cheers Clarky
17.
If you have to take the neck off, stick a capo on to hold the strings in place. That way, you just have to pop the neck back on when you're done, drop the strings in the saddles and tune it up. No faffing about restringing it.
Smart thinking WoT. I often have the strings 'pinging' off the tuners when I adjust the truss rod
18.
make sure you leave it at least 24 hours to settle before re-adjusting
Agreed, the half an hour comment is just to see whether the neck's still totally out of whack
19. I believe it was traded long ago for this *
20. Hi Tom, I have a couple of Fender basses with truss rod adjustment at that end - a 70 reissue P bass and my 1972 P bass. Its actually very much trial and error and depends whether there is any form of slot at the edge of the pickguard. If there is (like on my 72), I am slightly lazy and loosen the rear plate screws (all of this being done sat on the bed, so no hard surfaces), having loosened the strings a few full tuner turns first. This usually exposes enough of the truss rod screw, I adjust this while supporting the neck with my other hand. Unless the neck is really out of whack a 1/4 turn is usually plenty. Then screw back and leave it half an hour and test. I think clamping everything is just making life difficult for yourself as these are hardy instruments. Unscientific but it has always worked with me. If there is no pickguard slot (like on my 70 RI) its harder as the entire neck needs removing. I once screwed up here on an earlier bass by taking the neck on and off so much that I stripped the neck plate screws and ended up with the usual stuff-screwholes-with-toothpick solution! Unless the truss rod screw is especially tight and needs tightening further (not necessarily a good sign) you should have enough strength in your arm to support the neck again while turning the truss rod adjuster screw with screwdriver. The bed is your friend here in my humble opinion!
21.
Great news Clarky, lable your cables mate
Thanks Chris, I will be buying some thick, lurid coloured amp cables before I even try this out as I don't trust what I have!
22. How about this for customer service? I spoke to Mark at BassDirect on Tuesday, who arranged shipping labels etc. By Wednesday I had posted the faulty head back to TC in Denmark and today the replacement arrived direct from TC. Three days to sort the whole matter! Thanks Mark and amazingly speedy service from TC Electronic
23. Thats pretty - presume thats the one listed as sold on BassGear's website?
24. Trade did not work out. Hence up FS again Edit: MUCH keener on cash than trades due to nasty surprise tax bill Edit 2: Will have only occasional access to BC in next couple of weeks - will respond to any messages when I can
