Ah an Ibanza. Nah, excellent call. You're gonna have to learn For Who the Bell Tolls + all the widely bits though.
Nope, not an Ibanza, but an Alembic Spoiler in black. I have a lovely one in flame maple already which my band think too 'coffee table' and will go up FS if I bag the black one -
You see that thar Pingray in my sig? That's how I did mine. I'm lucky enough to have tons of P80-1500 at my disposal but for this job 800+ is a good middle ground - if you think you're not making much progress maybe even 500 may be what's needed. A good tip though is that say you start out with 800 and look after tha paper after a few minutes of rubbing it loses it coarseness so goes up in grade. I keep all my used sandpapers and only use the number as a gauge - I feel it to tell how course it is. A broken in sheet of 800 is as good as a fresh 1000 which is perfect for finishing before buffing. Buffing is boooooooring I suggest a wee powered buffer you get them for about a tenner from Argos and sh*t like that. Also if it has a scratch plate you have a perfect test bed under there for experimenting. I'm presuming you have a clear finish over paint which gives you that little bit extra headroom for rubbing back.
Thanks Ou7shined, I think (assuming I buy this bass) I will take a look and see how bad it looks in 'real life' before making any decisions - as I know things can often look worse when photographed, especially if they are gloss finished. I can't look over the bass as its in the US right now and I only have photos to go on. Here's a rather large clue as to what the bass is (no its not the original which was stolen!) Removing/reducing scratches on a high gloss paint finish

OK, I don't want to make things worse so maybe I will take you up on your Wembley suggestion Tino if I get this bass. I am near Hammersmith so Wembley is about half an hour's drive. Thanks fellas as it sounds like something can be done here and that was my concern - I don't want to buy a 20-year old bass that will need loads of expensive re-fin type work. Lets see if I can do the deal first as the seller and I are a little apart on price at this point -

Thanks gents. So I am clear, would P800 sandpaper remove the worst then, do you reckon? And then follow up with some Farecla car-type polish? And I would be doing this by hand, as I assume that what you meant by handjob -

Here's pics of the front and rear scratches to give you an idea of what I mean -
I am looking at another bass (I know .... I need to sell something first) which has a 20 year old black high-gloss finish. Where the forearm and right hand rest there are tons of surface scratches, as there are in the usual buckle rash area on the rear of the bass. Now I don't mind some surface scratches but there's quite a lot and I just wondered if it is safe to use something like T-cut to tone these down? Or is there another method you guys recommend? Don't want to go to expense of having it professionally re-finn'ed or anything like that. Thanks in advance, Clarky
If I like my scout thats due to arrive Monday....chances I will take what you offer at the last seen price....OK it wont colour match but who cares???
I might (not sure) be coming to BassBash on 27th so could bring this along then - depending of course whether you get on with your combo (I reckon you will though, unless you wanty glassy hi-fi sounds and I'm guessing thats not your thing!)

OK new prices (last ones or I just put in storage in its case in my study): £840 including post but excluding the soft case - bargain for a virtually new Thunderbird. The premium, thickly padded (and unused, bar one rehearsal) Thunderbird gigbag (£65 at Thomann) I would sell separately for £45 posted (although it might be tricky finding some kind of box to post it in) If picked up, prices are £825 and £35 respectively, ie, £860 the pair.

In case anyone missed this, I would entertain trade ideas (with appropriate cash adjustment either way) against quality 5-stringers - be they Fender, super-Fender or (preferably) Alembic. Would even consider a trade against an Orange AD200B valve head. Or a decent 4-string PJ I am a bit picky and traditionalist in what I like so please don't be offended if I say no!

Ratteling G tuning peg on my new CV jazz.
Clarky replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
The problem is once i start messing around with it then i might have trouble returning it.
Exactly. Send it back. Tell you what, I could do you a favour and lend you Sid for the gig if you wanted. Slim necked punchy Precision with flats on? If thats of interest I will bring it to my office near Liverpool Street tomorrow and I could hand over at lunch-time? Just a thought -

Sorry to hear this Dave. Really disappointing as these basses get rave reviews. I'm afraid I'm no good with tuners so can't offer any help. You should not have to buy a set of hipshots. That's not right. Have you spoken to the retailer and asked about their returns policy? Its possible they will send you a replacement and pick up the faulty bass on the same run. -
Bought it blind... .......Will I love it????
if you like big tubey sounding amp sounds, like an old valve rig, but easily manoeuvrable you will love this. Valve preamp can be driven from smooth warm to grungey distorto gain. Basically its great for practically any style of music except perhaps glassy hi-fi sounding slap (and I'm reckoning thats not your thang anyway!) Its also bl88dy loud for such a modest sized rig, so much so that I have never used my Mesa extension cab live (s'why I've been trying to sell it). Cracking combo.

Olympic white 51 P reissue - never seen one of these
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
If anyone is looking a '51 reissue http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT For some reason on my search it was listed as being in Ireland so some of you folk might have missed it
That one is actually mislabelled as its a Sting '55 reissue - so not for those who like the mark of the tantric one on their bass necks! -
Oh blimey!! That is lovely! I bet the bids will run soon, pity the dollar rate is utterly dreadful right now or it would be an even better deal. I presume the colour is as per manufacture being a CIJ bass, it's not a re-fin is it?
Hard to say if its a re-fin but doesn't look that way - possibly a limited run in that colour? It is nice though. At the current price, it wouldn't be much more than £400 all-inclusive, which looks reasonable to me ... but as you say there could be a bunch of last minute bids -
Looks great in Oly white, albeit completely un-authentic. Even allowing for shipping and import duty this is still not a bad price. As in your "pink" thread, I think that shell pink CS Fender is just awesome. Absolutely stunning. The other colours are pretty standard - nice but standard so they look less a bit more 'ordinary'

Blimey - congratulations! Hope it goes well, although I don't hold out much hope for you partying into the small hours with JBJ afterwards (after that documentary last week where he jumps into a limo within seconds of finishing each gig!). The rest of the guys might join you for a beer though. Nice one
