Ratteling G tuning peg on my new CV jazz.
Clarky replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
Sorry to hear this Dave. Really disappointing as these basses get rave reviews. I'm afraid I'm no good with tuners so can't offer any help. You should not have to buy a set of hipshots. That's not right. Have you spoken to the retailer and asked about their returns policy? Its possible they will send you a replacement and pick up the faulty bass on the same run. -
Bought it blind... .......Will I love it????
if you like big tubey sounding amp sounds, like an old valve rig, but easily manoeuvrable you will love this. Valve preamp can be driven from smooth warm to grungey distorto gain. Basically its great for practically any style of music except perhaps glassy hi-fi sounding slap (and I'm reckoning thats not your thang anyway!) Its also bl88dy loud for such a modest sized rig, so much so that I have never used my Mesa extension cab live (s'why I've been trying to sell it). Cracking combo.

Olympic white 51 P reissue - never seen one of these
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
If anyone is looking a '51 reissue http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT For some reason on my search it was listed as being in Ireland so some of you folk might have missed it
That one is actually mislabelled as its a Sting '55 reissue - so not for those who like the mark of the tantric one on their bass necks! -
Oh blimey!! That is lovely! I bet the bids will run soon, pity the dollar rate is utterly dreadful right now or it would be an even better deal. I presume the colour is as per manufacture being a CIJ bass, it's not a re-fin is it?
Hard to say if its a re-fin but doesn't look that way - possibly a limited run in that colour? It is nice though. At the current price, it wouldn't be much more than £400 all-inclusive, which looks reasonable to me ... but as you say there could be a bunch of last minute bids -
Looks great in Oly white, albeit completely un-authentic. Even allowing for shipping and import duty this is still not a bad price. As in your "pink" thread, I think that shell pink CS Fender is just awesome. Absolutely stunning. The other colours are pretty standard - nice but standard so they look less a bit more 'ordinary'

Blimey - congratulations! Hope it goes well, although I don't hold out much hope for you partying into the small hours with JBJ afterwards (after that documentary last week where he jumps into a limo within seconds of finishing each gig!). The rest of the guys might join you for a beer though. Nice one
Yes, it is ALL of the neck I am thinking of. I'm sort of getting the impression that after sanding down, which worries me a little, then just spray away (frets included) and then clean them down afterwards. I'm lurching between "ahh just get on an try it" and "uh oh, here's a hug rod for my back". Thinking further, what does it actually matter if the frets get varnished too and I leave it? Would it drastically affect the sound and maybe feel? I guess after a playing for a while, the action of fretting a string would wear the varnish off the frets. Just thinking aloud (and hoping to be lazy...).
Hi Mark, I don't suppose you have a great local luthier/guitar repair shop who will do it for £20-30? I'm afraid that what I would resort to as I would be too cowardly PS, did you manage to get the action just right?

This is why I like EBMM basses...sounds amazing in this live mix
Clarky replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
He's technically very proficient (the bassist of course) - not heard this lot before, seems like half way between modern punk and early Metallica/Megadeth type thrash metal. Interesting. And yeah, the 'Ray actually sounded pretty good on this clip -
The Jazz in your original post is awesome looking B5 but NOT with gold hardware. Takes it from a lovely 60s retro thing to pure bling IMHO.

Station-Music does have the most jaw-dropping collection of basses of any website I've come across. Is that a Custom Shop 57?
Yeah, this is replacing a funsome "lively" neck and I don't want to end up cooking and twisting from too much hot sun.. but I do like the concept. I was actually thinking of doing the fretboard too (*runs and hides) and was wondering about coating the frets with wax instead of little strips of masking tape prior to varnishing. I do have a very clear and disturbing image in my mind of me blubbing, holding a buggered neck and mumbling "Why the f**k did I even think about doing this..."
So the L in MarkyL doesn't stand for Luthier then?
My bad Clarky. As soon as I clicked the post button I realised that it was presumptuous of me to have used the word "purely". To be fair though your poll was mostly about appearance.
To be fair, you are right! I am impressed by appearances, sort of the bass equivalent of Hyacinth Bucket

Predictably, here's Sid, my 1993/4 CIJ 70RI (back with original rosewood neck, after a BassChat-documented dalliance with an after-market maple neck):
-
That's a bit rum Steve, nobody said that to Clarky in his poll thread about this very neck... which he swapped back purely based upon appearance.
Wasn't just appearance, it was also feel. The rosewood neck (like Sid) was 17 years old and worn in, whereas the maple neck was very new feeling (as well as looking). Had I been able to spray varnish it (I am scared of anything other than slight tinkering, eg, truss rods and basic soldering) it might have been a different story though.

Just sold Gus a Wizard 51 P-bass pickup. Friendly comms and paid super-fast. Nice one!

Mrs Clarky is listening to "Island Life" by Grace Jones, some dross but also some really great songs Her version of the Pretender's "Private Life" is fantastically atmospheric with a great (and very simple) reggae bass line* Edit * think its Robbie Shakespeare as Sly 'n Robbie are credited on the original album

Cool retro collection you have there! The 57 looks surf-tastic
