1. To finish the story, Sid has gone back to the original rosewood neck and the maple neck is on its way to MarkyL for his 70s B/B/M Precision. Thanks to all who contributed and helped me make my decision.
2. Weeks old for a big saving (more than £200) on new. RAWWWKKKKK machine par excellence (as long as you like Jazz-type necks, that is) Not just rock though - ska credibility too as Horace from The Specials plays one now:
3. Saturday morning bumpola. Here's a pic (one of jonthebass's, thanks mate) of the pickup in situ on Sid
4. Quite pricey (£999) but rare, custom colour Walkabout at BassDirect http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=90464
5.
Don't know why you say that, Clarky. I only have three of these, so buying a fourth seems perfectly reasonable to me ...
Oh dear, I also have three. That means I will have to buy a fourth too
6. Presume you don't mean BassChat Marvin?
7. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...cout_combo.html
8. Mansons have them at £599 http://www.mansons.co.uk/shopping/brands/b...bass-amplifier/
9.
Tightwad!!
Well, I play flats (TI and Pyramids) and they are over £30 a set ... so yeah!
10. Given I need to sell to buy, I think I will stay away here, Thanks lozbass for advice on price, it did look a little OTT to me (and no bids is normally a good clue) but good to hear from someone 'in the know'.
11.
In order to get it you have to trace several older gilbass's threads and put things together yourself. It's a sort of a game.
Unfortunately since he had 3 Sadowsky 5's it impossible to know which 2 are for sale, although you have a 1:3 chance of being right! As games go, I prefer spin the bottle
12.
Clarky, could you please add Probably, but I can't remember?
done!
13. OK, thanks everyone for contributing. I think I am going to go back to the original rosewood neck, which is the clear majority view. As I said earlier, would have been a tougher call if the maple board had a vintage vibe but it just looks a bit pale and new to me next to the aged and battered body (the bass, not mine)
14. FYI, for those who after a SD Quarter Pounder, this sounds very similar and is slightly more punchy still. Really is superb for loud rock/punk/metal etc
15. I would like an Alembic 5 although I cannot afford one without selling something first. nevertheless what do the Alembic-watchers think of this one? Has a super-expensive cocobolo top which obviously adds to price (as will import duties etc) but does look rather nice http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2003-CUSTOM-ALEMBIC-...=item19bccbbbf2
16. More seriously, I have a good one (this will impress you Bilbo): 1. Clarky once had DB lessons from London jazzer Phil Bates* 2. Phil Bates used to be Stephane Grapelli's DB player in the 70s 3. Stephane Grapelli played alongside guitarist Philip Catherine in the late 70s 4. Philip Catherine was nicknamed 'young Django' by Charlie Mingus * RIP, lovely old dude, died a couple of years ago, used to be Tubby Hayes' DB player in the 60s
17. 1. Clarky 2. (Before Mrs C) went out with some right mingus 3. Charlie Mingus Voila
18. Statistically speaking, so far 98% of respondents in this poll have a less than 1:20 chance of breaking a string on a gig. That settles it for me. I will continue on my mean, lazy way and not bring a spare set of strings!
19.
Luckily I always had a set of 'boilys' in the gig bag.
Is that what they mean by 'boil in the bag'?
20.
Stop it Clarky!! I'll be bloody bankrupt before long
Its all a cunning ruse. I am actually your wife's solicitor and little by little I am draining your funds and setting them up in a Swiss numbered bank account for Mrs Tom1946
21.
Er - it's a fine poll. I was only havin' a bit laff an a joke.
I know you were, no offence taken! Trouble is I do actually agree with what you said
22.
Clarky, if you dreamt about setting up a BassChat poll to see how often people break their strings, then you need: 1. A holiday 2. More sex 3. More drugs 4. Fewer drugs 5. Therapy 6. A lot of booze 7. A Boston pancake 8. Esther Rantzen
Other than 7 or 8, I agree. I am a bit delirious having had about 10 hours sleep cumulatively over the past three days (combination of insomnia, acid reflux and sh*tty heavy cold) but that sno excuse. I AM SAD
23. I am tempted to add a poll as to how often the guitard in your band breaks a string at a gig - in our case, nearly every bl**dy time!
24.
Has to be maple. All Fenders look sh*t with rosewood boards, basses & guitars. If my only musical instrument option was a Fender with a rosewood board it would make me so unhappy I would give up playing.
Best not click on the links to my other basses in my sig then!
