Thanks all for these recommendations. So now I need to get out and about to try some of these. I'm not surprised to see Yamaha featuring and I've never been disappointed with anything I've played or owned by them over the years.Lakland is a new name to me but it sounds as though I might be lucky to get one for my likely budget. But the comment about the quality of the Bstring intrigues me so I'm going to keep my eyes open. G&L is also new to me so, food for thought. Thanks again. More thoughts welcome!

Have been absent from BC for a couple of weeks having only recently joined - initially because I needed (not wanted) to sell my Warwick Streamer 5 string bass. Am well hacked off but will be looking to get another 5 by the end of this summer. I'll probably have no more than £400 - 500 to spend. If it was you, fellow BC'ers, where would you spend the money? I'm mostly into the funk/jazz end of things but still have a lot of time for the bass playing of Ashley Hutchings/Dave Pegg and Danny Thompson. Am seriously interested in opinions and experiences of others, Having had a few seriously good but expensive basses over the last 40 years I'm hopeful that I can get something that sounds and feels as good but cheaper. I'm not a brand snob and I'm more than happy to buy second hand. Just want to benefit from the collective wisdom/experience of other members so I've got something to think about over the next few months. Thanks..........

No, because some people have only got one bass because they can't afford more! Not having a go but feeling pxxxxxd off because I sold my wondrous Warwick Streamer 5string for a stupid price ("distress sale")and am left with only a Peavey cheapy for the forseeable future. But I do think that sometimes we could use one or two instruments only and get everything we need from them and that anything over that is an indulgence. But hey, I've never got less than 10 guitars and basses in the house so i'm not in a position to judge.

He is hiding behind a third party persona as he is a rookie when it comes to this kind of thing. However, he thanks you for this welcome and has already found much information and lively exchange of views about the horsemeat conspiracy as well as all things bass. He has always held basses , bass lines , bass players and bass playing in high regard and finds that joining BC confirms this view. Must gallop, au revoir.

Rare opportunity to buy a 5 string version of this classic high end,german built bass. Through neck design gives unrivalled sustain and vibrancy. Not to be confused with more recent bolt on or Korean made models. This instrument was made in 2002 and has the faultless build quality expected of Warwick. Maple (nicely figured birdseye) and what looks like walnut laminated/inlaid between body sections. Oil rubbed natural finish, gold hardware.Wenge fingerboard. Perfect intonation and accuracy, great playability from this wide neck design. Amazing tonal range from active eq/passive mode electronics. Excellent condition,recent DC stainless steel strings. Gator hard case included. This is a seriously beautiful instrument, the best bass i've ever played by a wide margin and I'll be sorry to see it go but shoulder injury means that I'm not playing it enough to keep and will be looking for something more minimalist like a Steinberger.
