Initial thoughts are that the Octabvre nails the OC-2 tone and feel, but that was really expected. Surprise was how close the Valeton is too. The MXR is close, tone-wise, but the ‘improved’ tracking makes it play slightly differently. However, it has its own thing going on and I actually prefer it to the Boss with the Oct-1 soloed. Any other recommendations for OC-2-alikes...?

Well, my OC-5 is delayed, but other tryouts are going well...

...pushed back to November now...

They certainly sound pretty close, but it’s hard to tell until you can hear how it reacts to the dynamics of your playing...

Yeah, I ordered from Andertons too, but I think GAK and all the rest are showing as unavailable at the moment too.

Still waiting on mine to be dispatched...

I preordered, but Andertons have pushed back their expected delivery date to the end of October now!

Can be, and you do have to be a bit cautious. I would say you couldn't go far wrong with the East stuff as a preamp. They're pretty good value for what you get and their Uni-Pre range will fit inside pretty much any bass (check the cavity space first!). Bonus is that they are solderless, so you can wire up a set of pickups and, if they really don't work for you, you can take them out again without major surgery!

Highly rate the Aguilar stuff. Pickups are great, but you've got to know your wiring to install their preamps, or have it done professionally. John East stuff is great for a quick drop-in solderless wiring solution (but don't do pickups). EMG certainly do the whole lot as one package. Couldn't comment on what they're like though. Ultimately, whilst an all-in-one solution would be nice, it's probably best to mix and match your pickups and preamp depending on your setup to avoid limited option.

Well, update on this - Managed to get hold of one of these and install it the other day. The preamp sounds great but is a fiddly fit. Very tight in the cavity of my bass, so be aware of that. I played round with it for a few days but decided that the passive route was the way to go for this bass, so have gone back to the simple set up. Would definitely consider this if i was building from scratch, or if a bass had a pre-routed battery compartment. Pretty much brand new J-tone is now up in the marketplace!

Used a few in different bands and styles: Aguilar Tone Hammer DI - My go-to all rounder. Great clean (dirty if you push it) tones with a bit of a classic vintage edge. Sadowsky Pre - Only have the SDP-2 model, but a nice (and very simple) preamp for a basic clean tone. EBS Microbass ii - Does it all! More of a modern clean tone, but has a mixable dirty channel / AB channel selecter , FX loop, tuner out (built in tuner and compresser if you buy the mark iii too!) Tech 21 Sansamp - Classic rock tones. The most colouring of my preamps, but in the right mix its a great colour!
