1. I'm a big Stan fan and I never liked that album.
 2.
I like the energy in this video and LOVE the big white Gretsch.
One of my favourite bands and one of my favourite bassists. Oh, and Annabella ain't bad either. John Frusciate bought his White Falcon because he was a big fan of Matthew Ashman.
 3. SilverfoxNik for Wals (certainly Pros), although I'm sure there are others too....
 4. I would never use a B over 125. I play very, very lightly unless I'm playing for a specific effect.
 5.
Barrie - surely you arent telling me that the purchaser of this bass routed the horn like that.. then went to the trouble of refinishing it? The superglue would have cleaned up easy. Whether it was put there or not be JC, I cant believe it would have left the JC workshop without the glue being removed. All very odd.
I remember playing the well-known blue GB Rumour that Bernie threw together from bits once upon a time. To this day its my favourite GB that I've ever played. At the time I offered to buy it but he wouldn't sell it, saying something to the effect that if anyone ever stripped it it could reflect badly on him. Apparently I was one in a long line of people who wanted it (one of which, strangely, was Flea). He refused to sell it every time, so I believe.
 6.
La Bella Stainless Steels.
Which also goes to show how subjective it is as I've used lots of La Bella and hated every set (and that's on everything from 4 to 6 string basses). Rotos for me, and I've used a lot of different types over the past 30-odd years. Of course it all depends what sound and feel you're looking for, how you play, what your bass and rig is like, the context etc; same as goes for every other bit of kit in fact.
 7. Never liked the Mr X version. Totally lacks both the groove and the focus. Plus that tone....yechhhhh.
 8. I change them often depending on context and what i'm trying to achieve. Different picks can make as much difference to your sound as a different brand of strings. Possibly more.
 9.
101% I had a 70s one had it for 3 weeks, Hated it i named it the "fart machine", i had then (still have it) a £180 mex jazz that blows it away, so used that and got rid of the fart machine. if you play hard as i do with fingers, aka rocco prestia, it was utterly usless. all it did was make the cab sound like the speakers were farting (hence) and the pickup cover was right where i played and just in the way all the time, and so made it difficult to mute with the palm. must be the most unfunkable bass on the planet, again "contexts"
I'm sure Cordell "Boogie" Mosson would have argued that if he was still with us. FWIW Geddy Lee played his really hard with fingers. Never seemed to have any problems.
 10.
What strings did you have on before? The same?
And this is the most pertinent question....you've picked just about the highest tension strings you could though, either way.
 11. Those are very high tension strings and very heavy gauge. I'd say you certainly need another set up, but would probably advise lower tension (and probably lighter) strings on a late '70s 4001, to be on the safe side. On a '70s P Bass, you'd probably be safer.
 12.
Wasn't 4000 just stating that this beautiful bass is back on the market, thereby recommencing the feelings of GAS-fuelled yearning and frustration caused by the previous threads? Don't knock a compliment and a free bump :-) All the best with retirement
Yes, this was exactly what I meant. I love this gorgeous bass but don't currently have the funds. Sorry if I upset anyone!
 13. And the torture begins again....
 14. Great price and a lovely bass. Best of luck!
 15. Hi Loz, So sorry to see this going and so sorry it didn't work out for me in the first place. If not for my arm problems (same reason I had to sell my Ric 4004) I'd still have it. Just a minor correction; the body itself is flamed maple, not ash. I'm sure everyone here knows this but I doubt there's a better bloke to buy from than Loz.
 16.
if you want prompt, efficient and personal customer service Rob and Dawn at Status Graphite are the ones to call (What?? just saying!)
The exact opposite of my - and a friend's - experience. He wanted to order one and eventually gave up!
 17.
Not condescending at all, but I can assure you it is lacking in real low end at the moment compared to everything else (including the Jazz). I'll try lowering the pickups as advised & hopefully this will improve things. If not, I'll be back. Thanks for the advice everyone.
Hi Jon, Good to catch up. Strangely I've been using a P for the odd thing recently - also for 'away' trips and risky gigs - and I agree (always have) that compared to the Rics it doesn't have real depth in the lows. What is does have is width in the lows. As Jack says, it's all about low mids. The way I look at it is from the perspective of pickup placement. Look where the neck pickup is on a Ric, and then where the P pickup is. I've considered this in the past and I'd say you might want to put a true neck pickup in there, a la Billy Sheehan. That's what I'd do. Or you could look at the John East preamp made specifically for P Basses as a different approach, although it's not cheap. Of course eq might help but then I'm sure you've been through all that. Slightly worrying to hear that about the Wal (although my first Custom was guilty of it too) as I've just bought a Pro and thin is not the plan! How do you find the Pro M? Always really liked those when I've tried them in shops.
 18.
Owner's manual and luthier familiar with the laws of physics and engineering will disagree with each other.
Or not, if they don't have a chip on their shoulder.
 19.
It's fairly well established what was going on... working class, white men saw disco as a threat as it was associated with afro-americans, latinos and the lgb community. Some of the backlash was quite violent: http://en.wikipedia....emolition_Night
This.
 20.
Two pretty contrary things right there.
Why? I know how to look after my cat but I still go to the vet when it's necessary.
 21. I remember this from last time. Lovely. If my Wal doesn't work out it's back to plan A and a trip to the Gallery for a custom order...
 22.
Does the serial start with S9? If so it should be built by Samick. The bass does look good and looks almost identical to jap Squiers, altough I'm not sure on the neck finish. 170 euros is a good price, should drop it a bit.
I believe it does and I believe it was. It could do with a fret dress and the truss rod is just about maxxed - I'll get both dealt with soon - but I only got it for 'mud-slinging' gigs where I didn't want to take my main basses. It's surprisingly good. I really like the neck and the big frets.
 23.
I'd bet his setups and maintenance are better. I received a Wal 5 not long ago that sold from The Gallery twice in very recent times, and the bridge saddles were completely stripped out and locked into rediculously-high position. Dirty output jack and the frets needed recrowning. You'd think for a bass they threw on the wall and priced at high market of 3k £, the thing should have been put in top notch condition. And the strings on it were from at least four years ago. I wasn't impressed.
Ditto what Mokl said about a commission sale. Just out of interest, did you ask them to set it up and specify strings etc? I don't know what it's like in Seattle but I don't know of any shop in the UK who would recrown the frets etc on a used bass without you specifying (and you'd usually have to pay extra too). FWIW I've used many of the best known luthiers in the UK for setups at one time or another and have never found anyone who does a better job for my tastes than Martin.
 24.
Don't go running when listening to Seconds Out. Too many odd time sigs, you'll keep falling over They're all good from Trespass to Abacab and the first half of Genesis. From 1977's And Then There Were Three, quality starts dropping off due to Phil Collins' first divorce and the slush starting to creep in, despite everyone telling him to go do a solo album and get it out of his system. After "Home By The Sea" finishes on Genesis, pretend nothing else happened
ATTWT is actually my favourite Genesis studio album, just pipping Trick of the Tail. It was the first Genesis album I heard though. Seconds Out is one of my 2 favourite live albums of all time and is probably my most played album ever. I love Genesis, certainly up to and including ATTWT .
