They played live on the Tube and I thought they were great. They did a version of Born To Run which I preferred to the live Springsteen versions I've seen (although I'm not a Springsteen fan TBH). It was early days for me as a player but I seem to remember Mark O'Toole was a pretty decent player by then. I don't think they did much on the studio recordings though; I think a large part of it was programmed. Absolutely love the bassline to 'Welcome...' and Trevor Horn is a genius IMO.

Rich, just so you don't have to put up with that again, I'll take it off your hands. Seriously, if the neck on yours is like the neck on most '72s I've played (including mine), it's my favourite neck ever. You can PM me pics if you want, just for scientific purposes, honest!

[/quote] Yes, in my experience (quite large) they can vary greatly from bass to bass even within a given year; I'm not talking about quality, I'm talking about feel and sound. Having said that I'd say the same about many manufacturers. For me that's been part of the fun, finding one that suits me. I much prefer my Fireglo '72 to my old '76, but the friend I sold it to much preferred the '76.

I have to agree that Chris Squire's sound is, in context, hard to beat. I particularly love his sound on Long Distance Runaround. Jon Camp, the player on the clip I posted, was obviously hugely influenced by him. Big +1 for the Ox in his Alembic period and Geezer on Heaven and Hell too. I also love JPJ's Jazz sound (and Gary Thain's and Lenny Kravitz's/LK's rotating roster) and John McVie's sounds on Rumours and Tusk. Brown Eyes is a gorgeous sound. Oh, and JJB and John Deacon. And Leigh Gorman. And Bernard Edwards! In a different vein, I also love Hadrien Feraud's sound. I have to say, someone's sound is so important to me. If I don't like someone's sound I find it very, very hard to listen to them, no matter how good they might be.

They're all different. I've played hundreds and there have been so many variations, but there are certain trends in certain periods. When I first tried my Fireglo '72 I'd had an '80 and a '76. It was so much better than those that it wasn't even on the same planet. The neck was (and is) totally different, the feel was totally different, the sound even more so; in a different league entirely.

Cool! Glad to hear it. That's why my 2 main basses are both '72s....anything pre-'73 feels very different IMO.

Might be a bit controversial given the current state of affairs, but this would be a contender for me, as would Glenn Hughes on Made In Europe, amongst many others, including Stu Zender on the early Jamiroquai albums. My favourite example of his would be Didjital Vibrations; love that sound. The best live sound I've ever heard was Stanley Clarke.
