Ok I dont think this will work for you as it really only works with square tops. It only gains a little bit but does work if the top is just a bit too short and you dont wanna compromise on the body shape. It also only really works on more symetrical rear basses such as P's not the jazz as shown below as the lower rear bit sticks out more than the top rear bit on a jazz. This (stunning sei) looks good and the top ends up being smaller than the body by quite a bit by using a thin top and heavily rounded sides
Hey, that was my photo (used to be my bass)! FWIW a Sei body (as above) is a lot smaller than an SR5. Did you ever get anything done with this? Fantastic wood.
Okay, well, I'm a bit late to the party, but anyway here's my entry; Sei Flamboyant # 15, ebony/maple NT, tricked out w/ Wal Pups & electronics. All of which makes me very happy &, I'm told gives my friends the right to call me a "Jammy Bastid"......
Toyed with buying that once when it was in the Gallery. But then I toy with buying every Sei in there....FWIW I had a Wal Custom and wouldn't put it in my top 15 basses that I've owned. Whatever I did with it it was just too nasal. Wish I hadn't sold it for £550 though!
I'm pretty sure they wouldn't.
I remember in the '80s I rang to ask this, and they said yep, no problem. IIRC it was something like £225; certainly nothing outrageous even if it was more. I'm sure things are different now though!
Lets remind ourselves how they sound. Made me rush out and buy my first Wal.. never managed to play like Leigh (got some of the sound).. some serious bass playing on their first album.
Leigh is one of my main influences. Tremendous player. Met him last year, finally, and he was a really nice bloke.

They played live on the Tube and I thought they were great. They did a version of Born To Run which I preferred to the live Springsteen versions I've seen (although I'm not a Springsteen fan TBH). It was early days for me as a player but I seem to remember Mark O'Toole was a pretty decent player by then. I don't think they did much on the studio recordings though; I think a large part of it was programmed. Absolutely love the bassline to 'Welcome...' and Trevor Horn is a genius IMO.
You should know that the bridge string width is adjustable. The nut looks the same or narrower than your old flamboyant
Yes, but the string spacing on that was really too wide too; I'd based it on an early Warwick Dolphin I had at the time (although it wasn't quite the same). I'd planned to get a new bridge unit if I ever got it back. I only really play 16-16.5mm now, centre to centre, and I couldn't ever get it down to that. Besides, I had my heart set on another Buckeye. It is very, very tempting though, in a Rodney Matthews' Stormbringer sort of way.

Rich, just so you don't have to put up with that again, I'll take it off your hands. Seriously, if the neck on yours is like the neck on most '72s I've played (including mine), it's my favourite neck ever. You can PM me pics if you want, just for scientific purposes, honest!
Haha, spied this bleating in his latest reply on Ric resource: I suspect the only cultural difference is that John Hall believe being right is his exclusive province. The example in the OP might beg to differ! Back to the basses: Simon has a stunning 4003, one of the best I've seen, and a beauty to play - and they can seem hit and miss. I loved that one; but I've met four in the flesh, and all seemed different. I'd need to bend the ear of an expert to know why that was. I know they vary by model and year, but are there variations between these? I've heard people comment that they really have to be tried to get a sense of what you're getting.
Yes, in my experience (quite large) they can vary greatly from bass to bass even within a given year; I'm not talking about quality, I'm talking about feel and sound. Having said that I'd say the same about many manufacturers. For me that's been part of the fun, finding one that suits me. I much prefer my Fireglo '72 to my old '76, but the friend I sold it to much preferred the '76.

I have to agree that Chris Squire's sound is, in context, hard to beat. I particularly love his sound on Long Distance Runaround. Jon Camp, the player on the clip I posted, was obviously hugely influenced by him. Big +1 for the Ox in his Alembic period and Geezer on Heaven and Hell too. I also love JPJ's Jazz sound (and Gary Thain's and Lenny Kravitz's/LK's rotating roster) and John McVie's sounds on Rumours and Tusk. Brown Eyes is a gorgeous sound. Oh, and JJB and John Deacon. And Leigh Gorman. And Bernard Edwards! In a different vein, I also love Hadrien Feraud's sound. I have to say, someone's sound is so important to me. If I don't like someone's sound I find it very, very hard to listen to them, no matter how good they might be.
-
They're all different. I've played hundreds and there have been so many variations, but there are certain trends in certain periods. When I first tried my Fireglo '72 I'd had an '80 and a '76. It was so much better than those that it wasn't even on the same planet. The neck was (and is) totally different, the feel was totally different, the sound even more so; in a different league entirely.

Cool! Glad to hear it. That's why my 2 main basses are both '72s....anything pre-'73 feels very different IMO.
A blonde '72 4001
You got it then? You like?

Might be a bit controversial given the current state of affairs, but this would be a contender for me, as would Glenn Hughes on Made In Europe, amongst many others, including Stu Zender on the early Jamiroquai albums. My favourite example of his would be Didjital Vibrations; love that sound. The best live sound I've ever heard was Stanley Clarke. The best bass sound I've ever had was with my '72 4001 through my early Trace AH150 11 band and Mk1 Trace 4x10 (pre-red stripe and port).
Speaking of which, this is what I really should have bought from him when I had the chance.
Perfect.
Has anybody had a chat with the Gallery about this? With respect, they [s]may not be the anoraks we are[/s], they might not have the accumulated knowledge we have.
I emailed Alex some time ago about this - it's wrong on all counts except possibly the Lemmy connection - but he didn't respond; too busy probably.

Cup of tea and a toasted teacake. When I get home of course. Prior to that, maybe an Old Rosie or two. And no, they're not ageing groupies.
