I think Bernie has outdone himself on this one!
I meant more about EBS not wanting any chance of scratches where a pickguard would be than the playability itself.
Me? Scratch a bass? How very dare you. -
Plectrum users need not apply for test drives
Eh? Not all of us plectrum users are ham-fisted you know; I play lighter than most of the guitarists I've worked with. FWIW I prefer my action how Bernie and Martin Petersen usually set their basses up. -
Bought Rumours when it came out and would subscribe to the school of thought that there's not a duff track on it.
That's because there isn't.

Rickenbacker 4001 wiring problems help wanted....please!
4000 replied to ash's topic in Repairs and Technical
Well I took the whole harness apart and resoldered: both pickups are working but the neck pickup is much weaker and the whole thing has the most awful earth buzz I have heard in my life - truly awful and unusable. i've ordered some copper shielding but I think this is more than an earthing issue. My mate has a meter to measure the pickup output so he will have a look when he gets around to it. I also emailed the guy who does the Ricky page 'Joey's bass Notes' but he is a little protective of his wiring PDFs and as a known enemy of the Rickenwaffe he may decline my request.....
Joey's a great bloke and if your Ric is a real one then I don't see a problem..... -
I tried one in a shop, nice and deffo woody- theres a distinct mid bias in the pups. Was blown out the water by the 1981 tokai jazz sound they had at half the price though!
I had one of said Tokais and I thought my Roadworn was quite a bit better-sounding.
First off; I have a dodgy shoulder so I am one of the first to ask the weight of a bass (9lb+ and my shoulder is shot after a gig). However, in answer to the non-specific question of whether the weight issue is a modern thing... 20+ years ago there was no bass forum on which people discussed/sold/bought basses! I believe it really is that simple; media/communication. 20+ years ago you may have read about the weight of a bass in a magazine and were you the sort who had a dicky back/shoulder/knee/whatever, you'd have given said bass a wide berth and yes I do recall discussing the weight of 70's Fenders with friends, especially as I had a Fender weighing 12lb which likely as not contributed to my knackered shoulder!
This. FWIW, I've read that Jaco complained about the weight of his Jazzes. One of the reasons Macca switched back to his Hofner was the light weight. I know of several name guitarists who also have Les Paul-related back problems (but who continue to play them), it's just not usually general knowledge. Also, speaking from personal experience, it doesn't matter how well a bass balances if you got lumbar, thoracic or cervical disc problems and the bass is too heavy. It ain't fun when everything from the waist down goes numb. And yes, this has been done to death, but I guess obviously still needs doing a bit more; about 20 more minutes either side should do.
Looks like the BDUK website has been updated and it's a full house. BassDayUK Web-Site Marcus Miller holding a Masterclass/Q&A. Bernard Lackner. Jah Wobble. Phil Mann. Pat Illingworth drumming for Marcus. Scott Devine and Overwater's Chris May holding an Interactive discussion, "The Alchemy of Tone from Maker to Player." Nigel Clutterbuck. There is still room for another main stage performance and hopefully Stevie will be bringing his "Most Wanted" band. these guys are awesome and have 2 of the most talented guitarists I have seen. You could even win a 33% discount on your custom bass from ACG Alan. Some nice prizes as normal. Final comment from Stevie in an email I had from him earlier in the week: "Tickets are selling fast ... I don't think there will be any on the door/on the day tickets left."
Hmm, I would have liked to have seen Jah Wobble and Chris's/Scott's talk looks very interesting.

To be honest I'm enjoying playing bass less than I ever have, although that's not helped by my disintegrating band situation. Am currently enjoying playing my Les Paul or acoustic at home far more. Of course that may change when I get my Rim bass; I usually find a new bass renews my interest.
I'm doing the stuff I like without compromise but with a little of the wisdom/experience that comes with being 48. Other people seem to like it too. This is a particularly British perception that originals bands should quit if they haven't made it by 30 and start doing covers. Song writing is the big buzz for me. We're not like previous generations. We've grown up with rock n roll. Why should our access be shut off to it when we get older? We should be venerated like the old blues men were in the 60s The quality of songs and performance is in my opinion far more important than age. Obviously we may have to try a little harder than younger bands. That's granted. As long as you mean it. Do it. Oh and Happy Birthday too Mr Big Red X. But remember it's just a number.
This. Great post.

Of the ones I've owned/played, I've preferred the Warwicks ('91 Streamer Stage 1, '91 Dolphin Pro 1 and a Dolphin Pro 2 being the pick of them; all had nice necks). I don't particularly like the Spector necks which ironically feel a bit clubby to me and the sound I just find a bit "meh", but that's just my opinion and with me playing them; you may achieve entirely different results. Ergonomically the Spectors also feel a little weird to me.
Hello, I have lurked and read loads on these forums so I thought it was a about time i posted something....best way to start is my Custom Alembic Essence... Walnut core, Tulip wood top laminate, 5 piece neck, Signature Electronics, side LED's. Purpleheart and maple laminates around the neck and body. Note cone shaped peghead has a narrow cut to it, front laminate on peghead is mahogany. I love it to bits best bass i have ever had. However atm i'm in love with my fretless Jazz and i don't get to play the Alembic as much as i should. It's going in for a full service so I know im bound to start playing it again.
Loving that tulipwood....
Richard Sinclair - Hatfield and the North, Camel Roger Glover -no mention yet? Cripes
Although Richard S was a much more up-front player, I really love Doug Ferguson's playing on Moonmadness (my favourite album, along with Floyd's WYWH). Andy Latimer has since admitted they underestimated how important he was to the sound of the band and that he regrets losing him. Rog was a big early influence of mine.

Also big +1 for the earlier mention of Jon Camp, and a mention for my personal fave Leigh Gorman of Bow Wow Wow. Listen to the bass part in Sexy Eiffel Towers.....
I'll always have a real love for Dave Gilmours voice & guitar sound
My equal favourite male singer (along with Seal) and my favourite guitarist bar none. FWIW George Hardie (DSOTM cover) taught me for 2 weeks at art college. Lovely chap. A vast improvement on the other tutors who were utterly crap!

Saw him at Bass Day the other year (where he virtually had me in tears) and off the back of that saw him at the Barbican not long after. He was unbelievable (didn't touch his fretless IIRC), bUt the best parts were all vocal ones, which is saying something given his bass playing!
Interesting point, though Rog was the one who left and then got miffed when the others just carried on without him - which was hardly surprising really, so surely Rog would have thought of that option? Who made the best new stuff after the split? I guess we could discuss that one until the cows come home, though I remember seeing Rog's Radio Kaos at Wembley many years ago and was not exactly overwhelmed. Personally, I reckon their best stuff was when they were together - as is so often the case when groups split but carry on separately. If I was forced to choose just one album I'd go for Wish You Were Here.
Although I haven't seen Rog live (heck, I somehow haven't even seen Floyd live), I would agree with the above. For me, Dave has to be in there for it to work properly. For me, he's the sound of Floyd more than anything else is. Wish You Were Here is one of my 2 favourite albums of all time, and easily my favourite Floyd one. IMO, it's a masterpiece.

Sky-plused everything I couldn't watch (our new house flooded last week due to some incompetent plumbing) - looking forward to watching it. Floyd are one of my all-time favourite bands; Shine On quite literally changed my life.
