Personally it's one of my favourite places, sad as that may sound. Never had anything less than stellar service. They must be good to put up with me hanging around for hours whenever I go down! Just to answer something I believe the OP mentioned, Alex always leaves me on my own to try a bass out, but that's what I generally want. If I have questions I'll ask. I personally hate having a salesman stand over me whilst I try something out.

To be honest if I was after a Jazz I'd prefer one with a P neck and pickups as I like them better.....I'll get me coat.
Thought i best update my Shuker collection having recently welcomed another into the pack.. So here we have : Singlecut 6 - Commissioned by Eude.. this thing is a lovely 33" Bass, very comfy with a very direct sound, can be loud in the mix without killing other instruments.. Jazz 5 - My 21st Birthday present from my parents, Upgraded to an East Preamp, sounds killer, the East really has made this the most versatile bass i own. Artist Pro 6 - Wow, this thing i mad, sounds like a double bass and weighs nothing! crazy. Had a bit of a game getting the action where i wanted, but thats what you sacrifice for a piezo bridge i guess!
Absolutely loving the top on that Artist....

At what weight do you consider a bass to be heavy?
I have to say though, heavy basses FEEL like quality
Until you're spending over £100 a month on chiropractic fees and waiting 2 years for consultant's appointments. Then they feel like a right pain in the proverbials. -
My back has deteriorated - combination of old slipped disc, rotator cuff injury to left shoulder - so I cannot really go above 9 pounds for a bass if I am to play for any reasonable amount of time (30 minutes plus).
Ditto, except it's at least 2 discs in my case, 1 lumbar and 1 cervical. Balance plays a part, as does how far out the bass sits, whether it balances well or not; my Alembic balanced perfectly but sat out to the left, which meant that more weight was concentrated on my left shoulder. As soon as I put it on my left leg went numb, so I eventually had to sell it. Nowadays even my Rics are becoming a struggle and they are both arguably the lightest examples I've come across at about 8.5lbs each. I've tried som basses in the Gallery (most recently a particulalry heavy old 'Ray, last time I was there) where my back has gone out as soon as I've put the bloody thing on. Ironic as in the old days I used to easily carry my 100lb Trace 4x10 one-handed.....those were the days! So, after that waffle , I'd say anything over 8lbs is borderline for me nowadays, but if the ergonomics are good and your back is healthy you'd should be able to happily cope with more. -
Why not? With my producer's hat on I'm always listening to what all the instruments are doing and adjusting my bass sound to suit. IMO the song is always king. To ignore what the song calls for and simply use "your sound" is as bad as the guitarist that plays too loud and inappropriately and is quite rightly slagged off.
I would tend to agree with this with the caveat that different people may have very different ideas about what the song calls for. This is something I constantly wrestle with. Geezer Butler famously said he used to get loads of grief from engineers about using distortion, when he believed it was required. Myself and JTUK, for example, have opposite opinions when it comes to John Entwistle's Alembic sound in the Who and John McVie's Alembic sound in Fleetwood Mac. Some people don't care what they sound like, and some of them are fantastic players. They're too busy playing. Personally, if I don't sound how I want to then I don't play how I want to, so for me it's very important. In fact I'd go so far as to say that I'm more worried about how I sound onstage than offstage; I care less about the sound that other people are hearing than the one I'm hearing, because the one I'm hearing has so much bearing on my playing. Daft, maybe, but true. I often wish it wasn't the case.
I don't know for sure what they do on SUB basses... but you can have two passive tone controls, like on many G&L basses. Being passive, they're strictly cut-only, no boost. Fitted with different capacitors, they filter out different frequency ranges. The very first OLP MM2 (Stingray type) were passive and had three knobs: two tone and one volume. They later switched to 2 volumes (one for each coil) and one tone. That's another possibility for the SUB. BUt I do not know which one is the right one.
I briefly had an early OLP. It did a fabulous Bernard Edwards (well, as near as I could get) . I actually preferred the tone to that of my mate's Stingray, and it only cost me £80. If it hadn't been for that bloody forearm contour I'd still have had it.

Why not then get a jazz aerodyne or something, which has the better looking jazz body too?
A. I've played loads of Ps over the years and the necks seem to vary quite a bit. Some I've liked, some I haven't. B. Personally I think the P is the better looking of the two; always have.
I'd go for a Musicman Stingray. Particularly the one that Rumble is selling at the minute, looks a real beaut. They're not neck through basses though. That or a Spector
Both, as fives, are usually comfortably (or should that be uncomfortably) over 8.5lbs...

Can't say I'd have been able to start on it (and am pretty happy that I started on a Ric seeing as I still play them) but with hindsight I'd have bitten the bullet a lot earlier and gone for an Alembic Triple O when my back could easily handle it. I'd probably have actually saved money spent on other stuff in the long run too. Broke my heart selling that bass because I simply couldn't wear it comfortably anymore (and they are NOT comfortable sitting down...). Basses I regret selling? In some ways I'd like most of them back but the only ones I really miss, apart from my Alembic, are my Pedulla MVP (although I recently played another and it was nowhere near as nice as I remember mine being - not sure if that's the rose-coloured spectacles of memory or not!), my Rick 8 string, my Sei 4 headless and the recently sold Sei 5. I really liked my first Warwick Dolphin too (although again it was pretty heavy, heavier than my vastly-inferior second one).
In that condition, I wouldn't go over £850. There are clean examples around.
Not too long ago I'd have said the same, but they seem to be going for more these days. Unlike the rarer ones, which seem to have come down....

If there are no issues other than a bit of player wear I'd say £1200-ish; maybe a little more at a push or a little less depending on condition. It depends how much you like it though as they can vary quite a bit and you may or may not find another that feels as nice to you (although the ones around that period seem reasonably consistent IMO). Over £1400 is I feel excessive, although they're always a lot more expensive in shops.

Has anyone here had a custom bass built for them?
4000 replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I've had 2 custom built Seis, a custom-built Alembic, and am in the process of having a Rim bass made (nearly finished - see Affiliates Market Rim thread here on BC). The most important thing is to have a very good idea of what you want when you go in. My first was a 6-er and at that point I'd only played 3 6s (2 of them Seis) so that was a bit of a stab in the dark. The Alembic was the one I had pinned down the most before going in and that came out the closest to what I expected (the neck and electronics were bog standard so that was easier to gauge). I'd still have it if not for the weight; even though I had it built with hollow wings it was still around 11lbs. Feel free to PM me if necessary. -
I sooooo want this but I don't know what I can do with a 100w amp. I suppose even just owning it and sitting looking at it would be immensely satisfying.
I used to use one in the loudest band I ever played in, VHF (and they were LOUD onstage; I had to compete with twin hot-rodded full Marshall stacks). I too would obviously love this, but timing is awful and it's probably a bit of an arse to cart round these days. FWIW my last Superbass sounded fantastic (the VHF one was nicked along with my first Ric); I was in idiot to let it go (sold it for £150 about 12 years ago! Aaggh!).
