1. I realise that. In addition my fave Alembic is probably most people's least favourite. But if we all liked the same things it would be really boring wouldn't it? I like my basses, like my musicians, to have personality. Oh and yes, it certainly did play amazingly. Probably better than anything else I've ever played, and that's saying a lot.
2. Ah, the haters. Don't you just love 'em?
3.
The phrase "Chops" is exceeded in its ghastliness only by "Woodsheddin' " and "Dialing in my tone". That is all.
After following countless posts full of wisdom and wit, I have come to the conclusion that you are Master Po. I, of course, am merely a grasshopper....
4. Pre-73 checkerbound Rick 4001s with full-width crushed pearl inlays, toaster etc. Same goes for the early 4001s's and RM1999s. These are mine: Alembic Triple Omega (this was mine, sadly no longer): Alembic Balance K, Rogue, Standard and Small Standard shapes. Sei Flamboyant and Original. Oh, and S/cut and Millenium! Rim Marseer. Fodera Matt Garrison. W&T Zoid. Some Carl Thompsons (and that Xylem bass!). Jerzy Drozd Barcelona. Most things in Sonic Blue. Original Steinberger. Jaydee Starchild. Er.....and probably some others. I'm hungry and can't think straight anymore.
5. New 1980 Jetglo Rick 4001 (not a horrible thing). Some git stole it from our van in Hendon in '86. S/n TC915 if anyone has it.
6. Although I'd probably agree that BSSM is my favourite Chilis album, there's plenty of stuff on the more recent albums I love too. I think the newer albums are just as good as most of the early ones, but then I'm a song guy; always was.
7. Make a stereo cable. It'll still work. Interestingly I've never done it myself despite having owned 12 Rics over 30 years!
8. I love Tangerine Dream; no bass. There are probably loads of dance & trance acts that I like that don't use bass too.
9. This gets curioser. A little while after the fretless had (apparently) gone I also played an indentical fretted 5 where the dots were still in the fretless position. Obviously that's your bass, prior to the dots being moved. I'd assumed they were different (but almost identical) basses; I now seem to recall Alex saying something about the fretless having a twin. I guess it could be that inbetween the "first one" going and the "second one" appearing Martin fretted it. or maybe if there are twins both were sold within a short period of each other. Sadly I really don't have the funds at the moment. We're in Moving Costs Hell.
10.
So far my grand total earnings for my musical career is £35. I could be saving some time.
That much?
11.
the melt wich is mine now =D
And very tasty it is too!
12. Oh I wish! The worst possible timing. I wonder if it has a twin; the fretless I tried was for sale as such in the Gallery. It seems unlikely that the owner would have had it fretted whilst it was on sale and it went about a week after I played it. This does sound great though, I checked out the clip. Nice!
13. The only thing that matters at the end of the day is whether you're happy, If a Squier does it, fine. If an Alembic is what you need, fine. Just stop worrying about it!
14. Don't know if they're classed as mainstream but I'd also love to play bass in the Hives. I love 'em.
15.
Kate Bush because I love her music and my parents would be well impressed. My dad might be more 'impressed' with Beyonce mind, but he wouldn't mind Kate Bush.
Aw cripes, I'd love to play for Kate Bush! (notice I said "for"...)
16.
My only issue is that I'm a bit deflated that after wanting one for so long that I don't get on with it!! I am VERY reluctant to move it on though. So my master plan is to use it as my only bass. Stick the jag under the bed and play the ric only.... Surely the only reason I don't get on with the ric is because I'm so used to the jag?? With basses in the past I have moved them on as soon as they get fingerprints on them hahaha but the ric is freakin awesome. So I will put in the extra effort and hope everything sorts itself out.
Ironically my post wasn't really directly aimed at you. Still, if you like the Jag better, stick to that. Although as others have said I've let basses go that I really wish I'd kept because they didn't suit what I was doing at the time. It may be that 6 months down the line they suit exactly what you're doing at that time. Of the 40 or so basses I've owned, the only ones I probably would still have sold if money hadn't been an issue are the Jazzes (3), my first Jaydee, a Washburn B20, my 2nd Warwick Dolphin Pro 1, my Hohner Jack and the Statii (4). I'd probably have kept everything else and doubtless would've found a use for them. Having said that, if you've a much better use or need for for the Ric money, sell it.
17. I think this is the bass I sold the Sei Melt s/cut to buy before finding out someone had beaten me to it; it was fretless when I played it and was the best fretless I've ever played by a mile. I'm a bit staggered that it's been fretted!!!! Did you ask Martin to do it or had he already done it? I'd thought that when it eventually turned up again (fretless) I'd try and nab it. If I had the money I'd buy it and have it defretted again! Sadly it's bad timing as a house buy is taking all my funds....
18.
You'll pick up the Ric in a couple of weeks and fall in love with how it plays all over again. Then in a few more weeks it'll be the Jag etc.
+1. I don't understand why the people who don't get on with Rics (or any other bass for that matter) feel like there's something peculiar about that. I don't get on with most basses out there. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the basses, all it means is I don't get on with them. Many people think Fenders and Fender-alikes are the most comfortable basses out there but I find them frighteningly uncomfortable. However that doesn't make everyone else wrong. Everyone is different and both aesthetically, sonically and ergonomically may therefore require something different. I don't understand what's so difficult to grasp about that. It's like somebody with size 12 feet saying "wow, these size 9s cost £500 but they're really uncomfortable. My £30 size 12s are way better!"
19. Hey, same as my birthday! Sadly not 1999 though.....
20.
He IS mainstream (for JAZZ!)
True enough!
21.
+1 but to be honest, you'd be playing for Trevor Horn if you were doing Seals best years.
That's fine with me. Big fan of Trev. If we were talking Bilbo's idea of mainstream then I'd like to play with John McLaughlin too. Or attempt to at least.
22.
Pat Metheny
I thought this was mainstream artist?
23.
I've played a fair few of them, they've all be top notch but I've never felt any affinity to them. I find them a little to 'spaced out' and flat to look at (example here and here) and the aesthetics put me off investigating them in depth.
I would generally say the same to be honest. I've preferred my Seis by some margin, but its all down to the individual. I'd try and play a few before you jump in. There are lots of luthiers out there so pick the one you feel the best connection with.
