Ziggy, you're not wrong. Nice bass BTW, what is it? To all interested parties, my Azure Rick is sold pending receipt of funds and will pay for my (hopefully) new acquisition outright. In view of this the Sei is now withdrawn from sale. Many thanks for the interest to all concerned and apologies for any disappointment; this wasn't quite how I planned it originally but will actually make more sense in the long run. If anything changes (now unlikely) I'll let you know.

Update: Looks like things may be all go with my bass of interest. Just a couple of things still to confirm; the good news for all concerned is I may have been given another week at least due to the seller's work commitments. As soon as things are definite either way I'll let all interested parties know. This could however still go pear-shaped so I don't want to get people's hopes up too soon.
Good luck with the sale shaun,i am still loving the sei 4.......all the best John
Cheers John, and glad to hear it. To all those who've shown interest, thanks and apologies for the delay (all have been PMd), but (1) I've been away in London (the RATM gig was mental!) and (2) everything has gone quiet with regards to the bass I'm interested in. I sent a few messages to the seller before I went to London on Saturday, but as yet have had no response. Until I'm sure that it's still available the Sei is going on hold; I'll keep you all posted. BTW MoonBassAlpha - good call.

Basically I've been offered a once in a lifetime buy, and I need some extra cash to make it happen. However my window of opportunity is tiny (next few days) and when that goes this will probably be withdrawn if it hasn't already gone; I've no real desire to sell it otherwise as it's a blinding bass in every respect. So; for sale, Sei Flamboyant headed 5 with flamed ash body, highly figured maple facings front and back (quilt with burl), birdseye maple board with purfling, flamed maple and mahogany neck, red side LEDs, twin Barts, Schack 18V circuit, piezo bridge, gold hardware all round. In excellent condition; the only flaw is a slight discoloration around one edge of the battery compartment where an old battery leaked at Moffat 2009; this really is something and nothing. No problems since and everything works great. Action is incredible and it's without doubt the nicest 5 string neck I've ever played, lovely and shallow. Spacing is around 17mm I think (can't find my ruler!) but is adjustable. Comes with gig bag. £1500 firm, sorry no trades or offers; this is a £3k bass new with a wait time of over 12 months. It sounds stunning and is extremely versatile. The B is as good as I've heard. Two things; if my window of opportunity closes (likely) and the bass I'm looking at goes, then this will be withdrawn. Also, I'm off to see RATM on Sunday so may, repeat may decide to take it to the Gallery for a commission sale, depending on the situation. This also means if someone wanted a quick buy I could maybe meet them in central London somewhere Saturday. Any questions please ask. Pics attached, and can send more if required. And no, the singlecut doesn't come with it (that's already gone)!

Have you ever fallen in love.............. with a bass ?
I mean true love, not lust or infatuation - love in the spiritual sense, where it feels like God is playing through you and you never want to be apart. Just wondered.
Yep. My '72 4001. It's actually known to all as The Voice of God. First time I picked it up I knew it was the one. First time I rehearsed/gigged with it, ditto. Since I've had the back pickup fixed (it died a few years back and I had been using a custom built replacement) the love affair has begun again. If I could never play another bass again I wouldn't care a jot. -
Pointless worrying about it... Tone is completely subjective and dependant upon the other instruments in the group and genre of music. Also just because one bass player can make a certain combination of instrument and amp sound good doesn't mean anyone else can.
The biggest + I've ever added to anything!
I think the term 'genius' is used to frequently as a substitute for 'good'. I know guys who can sit and transcribe big band charts for every instrument from memory alone. To me that is more of a genius than someone who writes songs-the musical knowledge and understanding to be able to do that is far greater than what is needed to write a song. In my opinion of course.
I actually feel the opposite. Whilst the skill you describe is impressive, a memory skill doesn't make someone a genius in my book because it doesn't require either reasoning ability or creativity. My computer appears to be able to remember things very well but it's still just a computer. In this context, someone with true creativity is someone who I would be most likely to refer to as a genius.
I liked both forms of music,
Strange how people don't consider this. Whilst undoubtedely a well paying gig, maybe they actually still enjoy doing the non-jazz gigs. It's all music. Plenty of musicians (and very good ones) simply enjoy playing music, fullstop. I never think it's weird a musician from one genre playing in another.
Never had a Ric, what is the nut width and is the neck deep or sort of Jazz profile?
They vary massively from pencil thin to pretty chunky depending on year. The nut width is always wider than a Jazz though, although they're much slimmer up the dusty end. The neck is essentially pretty much the same width all the way up.
That's a shame dude. Who will I corner and force to try out my 5er this time?
Ah, and there was me planning to woo Betty when you weren't looking! Was looking forward to it too, but as our singer says, the devil has sh*t in my kettle again.
You've got this entirely the wrong way round, y'know. I'm celibate until my partner leaves me ...
Rickenbacker 4001 (£295 brand new in 1980!) and after about 6 months a JHS 50 watt twin channel guitar combo to go with it (with built in tremelo!). Our guitarist and I used to both play through it. No idea what happened to the combo - I may have traded it for the 100W Custom Sound bass combo which followed. The Rick was stolen in Hendon in 1986 - serial number TC915 if anyone has it.

Nobody is really better than anybody else. Sure, some guys are technically better than others (which usually means they can play more difficult things, or possibly more subtle, nuanced things) but in the end it all comes down to taste and context. Mark King is the best at being Mark King, and Flea the best at being Flea. Each is the best in their respective bands. Thats all you can really say.
-
I was never interested in playing Teen Town or Donna Lee to be honest. Whilst probably good technical exercises I'm not sure I ever saw the point of learning to play them other than to say you could. Unless of course you're in a Jaco tribute band.

Sadly I won't be able to make it this time as have too many personal issues getting in the way. Hopefully next time though; it's a great do.
Awesome is right. i saw The Blockheads again last Saturday at Edmonton. The guy is a legend. I am trying to get to grips with it using a pick -- it is neither easy nor sounding correct.
This is the issue I have. Many of these things I could certainly go away and learn in terms of right notes/right tempo, but that is nothing like playing the piece correctly. The correct feel is everything, and with the Jaco-esque stuff (and Norman himself will tell you that's what Rhythm Stick is) I just can't nail it at all.
