How Can You Justify Spending £5,350 on a New Bass??
4000 replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I've just read the Gus G3 review in this month's Bass Guitar Magazine. I simply can not understand that its aesthetics and the minor advances in ergonomics, build quality, and tonal quality and variety is worth spending about THREE AND A HALF THOUSAND QUID extra than your average high end Warwick or some such. I understand how much it costs to build it, but that does not justify its "core worth" as a bass. If you have money to burn, no problem, I still think you would be totally wasting it on something providing so little extra benefit, and with two chrome saveloys attached to it. I'm sure it's fabulous, but it is certainly not £4,000 more fabulous than my Corvette $$. How is it possible to justify that spend on a new bass? And how in the name of Enid Blyton can BGM give it four out of five stars for Value For Money? Bloody ridiculous.
Maybe to somebody it's worth £4000 more than your Corvette, because they may absolutely love it and think your Corvette stinks. I honestly can't believe we're still having these threads, they're so idiotic. "I don't get it so they're wrong" is one of the basic problems with human nature and is why I think 90% of people on the face of the earth are imbeciles. What its worth to you is completely, utterly irrelevant. I could paint you a pretty good picture, but it would not (to those who care) be a Degas. Whether that mattered to you means nothing to those to whom it does matter. I tell you what, if I had £10,000 I'd go out and get another custom built Alembic and to me it would be worth every penny, while I wouldn't give you £50 for a Warwick Double Buck (or most other basses). -
Well i haven't a clue how to change them and am scared of messing it up.
Absolute doddle. I'm sure there are many on here who could talk you through it.

The Bernard Edwards Appreciation Thread
+1 His basslines were the song in a lot of cases, and that really is unique!
+2. One of my absolute favourite bassists ever. -
I'd try DiMarzio too, assuming you don't get on with the stock pickup that is. Every great sounding (to my ears) P I've ever heard bar one had a DiMarzio in it.
Lemmy - Jon.
+1000. Without him I wouldn't be here!

Re-eq. Use the tone controls. Whatever. You should be able to get a less in-your-face sound from the Ray. Bernard Edwards used one and he wasn't exactly in-your-face (just sublime ). My mate Stu swears by his and he doesn't use that typical Ray sound and plays 70s stuff.
The CB basses play effortlessly without buzzes all the way up the neck (with great intonation) and the that miraculous heel makes it feel very special. BTW if you want a P bass go for the Squier - it's incredible.
Sounds like my Sei. I tried one of the Squiers in the Gallery next to the MIM 50s classic P, but I much preferred the 50s classic; the neck was wonderful and I vastly preferred the tone. I think that's the one for me, although I haven't played a Roadworn yet and I've heard very good things about them.
After promising for ages, I've finally managed to get some images of mine. This is a Series II, ordered by me from Sheffield Carlsboro Sound Centre and delivered in 1986 (Phil Oakey and his then partner - one of the HL singers - was in the shop when I visited to collect: they'd just finished a Saturday morning kids show on TV). It's number 251 and has a Padauk top. I used this bass for the second part of my 'career' (up until around '91). It is very heavily gigged but I looked after it so it's still in extremely good condition. The only signs of age are some greying of the lacquer at the sides of the fretboard (a bit of WD40 on the board helped with this but hasn't remedied it fully - thanks OTPJ!) The bass still plays beautifully and sounds thunderous (it's a Status!) Apologies for the poor quality of the images - my talent for photography is matched by that for playing bass
Crikey Loz, you've mentioned it before but I didn't realise it was such a looker! I love the look of these basses (one of my all-time favourite shapes) but the shape unfortunately absolutely hates me.
I'll come clean; I've been gassing for a 32" scale Bordwell bass for the last two years - ever since I played Davo's beauty. Examples thus (not Davo's bass): The smoothest fretted bass I ever played Works out too expensive for me because of the exchange rate, bank charges, import duties and shipping, VAT etc. Shame.
Never played one of Chris's basses but have drooled over them often. I gather they're nice then! I thought about ordering one just before the exchange rate bottomed a year or two ago; that put paid to that. Hoping for a Rim in the near future (er, I'll rephrase that ), still GASsing for another Sei, an ACG would be nice (you're on the list Alan!), always for another Alembic, and flying in the face of my thoughts for many years, I really fancy a P (bass that is).
How anyone could claim they prefered Clapton over Beck is a mystery to me.
For the same reason anybody prefers anybody or anything; because people have different tastes.
Jamiroquai? I like them but just check out Tower of Power... top funky band, some of the basslines are so close it could be taken to court!! Im surprised TOP havent been mentioned here since Ive been on. Rocco Prestia is a legend.
Some great lines but I much prefer Jamiroquai's first 3 albums to TOP.
Yes please
No thanks!

Yep. The worst thing is I not only wrote the part, I also wrote the song. It's simple as hell too.
-
Despite my love for exotics I often find that at home I prefer to play cheapies when I have them.

The Gallery by a mile. Gary at Promenade Music is really helpful too, though they don't have the goodies that the Gallery do.
Yes, you're right. And besides these, there's another cliched response too: "bass w***ery"
I actually like a bit of that occasionally (as some who've seen me play will attest ), I just didn't feel that for me at least this was a particularly good version of it. In terms of noodling give me Matt Garrison, Hadrien or Janek anyday. In terms of groove, give me Bernard Edwards or Stu Zender (and several others). As Mike says, AJ isn't bad either! For me it just fell between a lot of stools, but if the OP loves it that's all that matters. The problem is that as others have said this is so personal that people are always going to disagree. Thanks for posting though, I'm always open to hearing someone new and don't let any of the naysayers (me included) put you off!

Actually I thought he wasn't that impressive technically; nowhere near fluid enough for me. I also hated his tone. Sorry! Great drummer though!
best advice on here, IMV Try and fix the problem rather than dally around with light this and that. Of course, it depends how shot is shot, but unless your back is disintegrating then back exercises and a regime would be money better spent, I think. I think you can be surprised how a few routines can help out in this regard. I've been through a few.
A lighter bass is always a good idea in the long term. However some of us sadly don't have the option.

In classical, blues, latin or jazz circles this wouldn't even be an argument....
I just realised - that's me you're talking about! I have tried (and mistakenly bought) a number of basses that just don't have my tone and I can't get on with them, no matter how playable, comfortable or pretty they are. Rather than try to get my tone via outboard eq and fx, I'd rather have a bass that does my sound naturally - simple solutions are always best. I want playability, comfort, tone and looks and I want them all rather than choosing one over another. Oh, I want it to be as cheap as possible too...........
Can't really argue with that! (Although doubtless someone will... )
I'm sure that there are people on this forum who could stylistically give something more to the Who than Pino ever will. To me it's a safe, boring and utterly wrong choice probably instigated by Roger who can now tell Pino to "turn down" as the bass player is now the hired help as opposed to an equal.
Sadly I have to agree that this is probably true. Pino is a very good player, but I wish they'd got someone more flamboyant. Surely that's what the Who was all about? They do however have the right to keep playing if they so wish; I think they've earned that. If people don't like it, don't watch them. I don't really watch anything by them these days and I wouldn't go to a gig again (saw them twice with JAE), but I absolutely respect their right to keep playing.
-
I am never going to like The Who as I couldn't stand Entwhitsle or Moon... but, nobody can capture their 'feel' because nobody would really want to play all of the place...with dodgy timing and everything.
FWIW I haven't watched the performance in question, but although I'll admit that I'm not really interested in them without John, I don't see how a dodgy performance somehow means that all their performances must be dodgy. Maybe they had a bad day. Maybe the sound was crap. Anyone ever played a gig where the sound was crap? Rhetorical question BTW, just in case. To all those who say they should give up, I hope people are saying the same about you when you're they're age (if not preferably before).
Maybe we should set something up at a Bass Bash - get a load of boutique basses and blind test them somehow. We could get a player to play x number of basses behind a screen; same amp, same settings, same leads etc and see whether listeners can 'hear' a boutique bass? Or get 30 players to play the same 6 basses or so but blindfolded to see if they can 'feel' an objectively 'better quality' instrument?
As I've always said, it's about what works for the individual. That could just as easily be a cheapy as something pricey. My favourite bass cost me £490 and I prefer the sound to anything else I've played. However my second favourite would be my old Alembic, which cost me £3.5k. All that proves is I like them both and that price doesn't come into it (although maybe US made with twin trussrods and through-necks does!).
That would explain Duffy.....
