Its being refinished in the same red as the bass featured on the first page of the JD website - it should be done soon - can't wait to get it back!
I'm so sad you're having that refinished; it's possibly my 2nd favourite Jaydee ever. I absolutely love the colour.
2.
Hi 4000 - you're clearly an aesthete of the highest order - I've seen the evidence (lots of it!) I'll write properly tomorrow (work still mad but calming a little after today)
Ha! I think in this Loz (as in so much else) I'm rather adrift of you.....best of luck with the work. Had a mad week last week myself with another looming. Friday just can't come soon enough.
3.
Hey Shaun, Great to hear from you mate! Hope you're well! Yeah, let me know if you've any gigs, or if you're free one day. I'm staying at home for another year before college, working full time at Somerfield in Poulton, not bad, easy beer tokens... haha! Concentrating on my bass trombone work really, busy playing! Fancy another VType? You know it's tempting! I still have the Wal btw... call round sometime, or we'll meet up! I'll pm more, and my number!
You too Matt, hope you're keeping well. I wish I did have some gigs: I'm beginning to think I've clanged my last live E . Glad to hear you're playing a lot; you'll have to let me know when you're playing. Oh, and I still need to have a go of that Wal. Ah, much as I like the V-type, my back doesn't unfortunately. That was the reason I got rid in the first place; it was just the wrong height for me to be bending to with a prolapsed disc. Great combo though, punchy as hell. Sounded fantastic with my old Warwick Dolphin and my 2nd JD. Have a bump!
4. I once played a Brown Bass with the Stanley taper (incidentally, it weighed half of what my SC Deluxe weighed) and it was possibly the most amazing neck I've ever laid hands on. I had a look at the pics on the Bass Central site too Loz; it really is a staggeringly beautiful instrument. I'm also completely with you on combining aesthetics and playability; for me that's what it's all about.
5.
The previous comments about production methods are very true indeed. At the end of the day it's not down to the price. I was recently at the Gallery where a 'lowly' Squier Classic Vibe jazz bass blew away all of the Sadowsky basses I tried out. At the end of the day it's down to what fits you, as opposed to the price.
So true. I love owning really nice basses, I love exotics, but it's ultimately down to what does the job. I had a similar experience in the Gallery with an Ibanez SR606, which I preferred to all but a couple of the boutiques in there.
6. Hey Matt, how are you doing? Long time no speak! We really will have to get together some time....best of luck with the sale, they're a great piece of kit (I used to have one).
7. It's one of 2 or 3 basses currently for sale on Basschat that I'd love, but alas I currently have no cash. Have a bump on me.
8. So is the action as low as everyone says he had it?
9. My '72 Ric with all the collectable features was bought in a sale in '93 for £490, reduced from £680. It had been in the shop a year. I've seen similar basses go in the past few years for easily £2.5k+.
10. My 1 & 2 sounded pretty different, but they had different neck construction (the 1 was IIRC mainly maple with walnut laminates, whereas IIRC the 2 was mainly walnut/mahogany with maple lams; of course the pickup placement is different too. I much preferred the sound of the 2, but YMMV.
11.
I've owned both and I think Jaydees and Alembics are worlds apart in terms of tone. The Jaydees tend to have more prominent mid range and less thunderous low end (although the S2000 pickups are warmer to some extent). Alembics are almost the opposite, relatively flat in response. Although the maple necked/faced models are punchier than other Alembics in my limited experience.
I would tend to agree, IME they sound very little like each other. Indeed if you take Mark King as an example, his Jaydee sound and his Alembic sound were very different.
12.
Congratulations! I see myself heading down the jaydee road eventually, in large part thanks to this thread and the jaydee porn one. Oh my, 12 lbs is pretty hefty. I have two Fender J's in ash that weigh in at 11 lbs, and they do get heavy after a wile standing. My ideal bass weight is 9-10 lbs, would a Seriess II/III be likely to land in that region? Then again, weight isn't a real dealbreaker - at 1.88m I'm a pretty big guy too so I wouldn't want a really small bass body either. How does the Series III body compare to a classic Alembic for instance?
I've spoken to John about this in the past and he can make the bass out of a lighter wood (e.g. swamp ash) and he can also hollow the wings out at no extra charge. In addition, the 2 and 3 have smaller bodies than the 1. One day I hope to get one done that comes in no more (and hopefully less) than 9lbs. I've played one or two lightish Series 2s, but my Series 1 and 2 both weighed at least 12lbs.
13.
Well thanks, but no need to be jealous, at least you could get a tune out of it!
Ah, I believe you do yourself a disservice sir!
14.
I could well forfeit my membership here by saying this, but I'm not an Alembic fan.
As you may have guessed, Loz and I are in a big way!
15. Oh good gravy, that's gorgeous. I'm incredibly jealous! As you know, I do love buckeye......stunning!
16. The great thing about this simple thread is it proves beyond all doubt that there is no such thing as the best bass, only the best bass for the particular player.
17. Crikey, I wonder if I'll be able to get 30 seconds playing in before the plane takes off? Congrats BTW! So, will the money be going towards another Alembic or another Alleva?
18. As a single bass, my '72 Ric 4001. It doesn't play as well as it used to (thanks to the one time ministrations of someone who didn't know how to adjust the neck - it could also do with a refret as the frets are now almost nonexistent) but it's still my favourite sounding (although not right for everything) and looking bass. As a make, a close thing between a good Ric, the right Alembic and the right Sei. Although it depends what music I'm playing and what sound I'm after. Those 3 would be the first calls though. BTW, I've seen lots of footage of Flea using his Spector live. My favourite Flea sound is the Wal on BSSM, which owes more than a passing nod to Leigh Gorman of Bow Wow Wow (and yes, Flea is a BWW fan, as is John Frusciante, who bought a White Falcon because Matthew Ashman played one).
19. Ah Loz, I wish I could afford it! Best of luck with the sale (and I just hope I get to play it before it goes....). Beautiful.
20.
And aplogies to 6stringbassist (yes I covert my fellow BC'ers Sei 6 string single cutaway)
Yep, that's the one. I covet it too!
21.
When I am busy nowadays it tends to be a lot more percussive and muted - always found it interesting that N-WR said the HMWYRS was because of Jaco but if Jaco had played it it wouldn't have been running about in that smooth burbling way but much more punchy with more space between the notes, if you see what I mean? Like much as I love Son Of A Preacher Man I would never play anything that smooth and subtle. Alex
Interesting. I think that's one of the reasons Jaco (and many of the rest of the "back-pickup brigade" ) were never a big influence on me. When I'd been playing a short time I heard a rock guitarist by the name of Frank Marino who was (for the time) extremely fluid sounding, and I thought "that's what I want to sound like, but on bass". That's basically what I always aimed for, and consequently the ghost-noted, staccato thing has never really been a big part of my arsenal. I always preferred HMWYRS to pretty much anything of Jaco's in terms of tone and feel.
22.
The first bass sound I ever noticed, on a live recording of this, I guess I was about eight years old at the time: Nastiness is underrated. Slightly more recent nastiness: Alex
Ah, Rog. What a sound that is. Near to my ideal. Of course Les isn't bad either.
23. Ah Loz, that makes me weep. One of the saddest moments of my playing life, having to get rid of that. There are days I really wish I hadn't, but my reasons are sadly still valid. Thanks for the memories though. Seems you've forced my hand; here's yours!
