How to make your bass sound better - Play it.
4000 replied to BassApprentice's topic in Bass Guitars
Possibly, but in my experience thick finishes seems to create a more reflective sound, to my ears at least. Others might hear it differently. FWIW I think I liked the first tone better in the example, so I’m not sure it gets better. 😂 -

I’m a firm believer in the “sounds good acoustically”. Of all the many basses I’ve had, the ones that sounded best acoustically tended to sound the best. In fact they’ve all generally sounded like an amplified version of what they’ve sounded like acoustically, not surprisingly. With regards to finish, that definitely has an effect. I’ve experienced first hand where instruments with thick poly finishes have been stripped and have sounded different afterwards. Of course some people will notice far more than others. -
To be honest it could just be the luck of the draw. I remember Andy Travis getting a Nate Mendel P Bass that IIRC weighed less than 8lbs; the only one I tried was noticeably heavier than my Rics (Probably something like 9.5lb) and another I wanted to buy turned out to be well over 10lb, so I didn’t. Wood is wood after all, no two pieces being the same. I always ask before I buy these days.

Really, really sorry to hear this. You strike me as one of the best eggs on here - and there are a lot of good ones - so I really hope it works out. Wishing you all the best.

I think it’s nice to see Diego Maradona having a career after football. 😂

I’m lucky in that I really like the 90125-era stuff as well; maybe not as much as the classic stuff, but I still think it’s great. I love It Can Happen and Changes. I like Big Generator too; Love Will Find A Way is top quality AOR. After that I do feel they get a bit spotty, even for me. Some really good tracks, but quite a few indifferent ones too. Still, I would say the same about Genesis from Duke onwards.

I’ve watched this before. Excellent vid.

Bassist (etc) as main lyric writer (but not singer/tunesmith)

Me? 😂 I write half our band’s material (music and lyrics) but, with the exception of one song, only sing backing. I’ll get me coat.. -
Real-world gigging experiences post-COVID - how is it for you?

Did a brief, acoustic (well, except for me) socially distanced set the other weekend for a friend’s birthday. Nothing else on the horizon for the forseeable, and our rehearsal rooms remain closed. We been doing acoustic rehearsals at a band members house. Unable to finish our album too as the studio is still closed and we have no money anyway due to having lost a bunch of gigs. It’s pretty demoralising TBH. -
I really don’t know what mine is. It’s a toss up between The Yes Album, CTTE, GFTO and Relayer. My problem with GFTO is the production, which is a bit flat, otherwise it would probably be that. Big fan of Trevor. He produced Seal too, who I love.

I think the bass sounds really good on the Todmobile version. What are you listening to it on? I generally stick it on headphones at volume. It’s one of the things that got me looking at Warwicks again. I actually think the bass sound on GFTO is pretty understated in Chris’s terms. Still, we all hear things differently! Agree about Gabriel. If he hadn’t left Genesis we wouldn’t have got Solsbury Hill either, which Im having played at my funeral. First time I heard that I was about 15 and at my cousin’s 21st birthday party. It was the first time I got really, really drunk. Apparently I kept putting the track on, over and over and over, and eventually someone had to physically remove me from the area of the stereo.😂

As I stated above, I heard ATTWT, then Seconds Out, then Trick & W&W well before I ever heard the actual Gabriel recordings, so that’s my favourite era. I also prefer how the Seconds Out era band play the Gabriel era stuff; they’re a much more fluid, polished band, which I prefer, but, as you say, I heard those versions first and I agree that tends to colour your opinion. I remember hearing the original version of Supper’s Ready on the Friday Rock Show after a couple of years of listening to the Seconds Out version and I was a bit shocked at how different it felt.

I love both. It’s arguably my favourite piece of music ever.

It’s funny you should mention the Lamb as it was the only album of Genesis’s I somehow missed hearing. The first time I heard it was the Archive live version and I couldn’t get into it at all. The past few weeks I’ve played the actual album several times and it’s starting to click a bit more. Love the concept and there are some cracking tracks on it, but there are a few weaker ones too. ‘it’ does nothing for me at all, I think it’s a terrible track and such a shame they finished with it. My friend feels the same; in fact it’s been rechristened ‘**it’.😂 Stuff like The Lamb itself though, Fly on a Windshield, Back In NYC......amazing.

I started with Genesis (ATTWT then Seconds Out), got into Rush later, then Yes much later still. TBH, I much, much prefer Genesis and Yes to Rush, even though I do really like Rush. Rush are much more of a rock band than either of the others. I tried to get a friend, who is a huge Genesis/Yes fan, into Rush but he just can’t get to grips with them at all. Genesis and Yes, along with ABBA and maybe Floyd, are my favourite bands. I’ve spent all this week listening to Genesis’s back catalogue whilst working from home. Amazing stuff.

I post this whenever I can too. The greatest thing ever!

Must admit I’d be interested to know too. Finding a good refinisher can be a bit of a crapshoot so when you do find one, getting an idea of how much they charge is useful.

This occurred to me when I was looking again earlier. I think it is. He’s one of the few Modulus guys I can think of but didn’t immediately spring to mind. -

I think the last Prince I really listened to was probably Diamonds & Pearls.😂 -
I go through the PA 99% of the time - ours, as the venues we play almost never have PAs or soundmen - but always sit down at gigs these days, so that’s not a problem. I also don’t like being loud onstage; in the mix is just fine with me. Have to say one thing that’s always baffled me, even in my jumping about days, is people who have a deafening rig blaring at their ears. I don’t want my rig anywhere near my ears, particularly if it’s loud.

Aargh. Hated that. Gimme the original any day.

My favourite bass player (in context, obviously). End of.
