I went the whole hog and chose a 6.😁 The next two were 4s, and if I was ordering again it’d be a 4. To be honest, I’ve never played a 5 or 6 (and I’ve played a lot and have owned a few top notch ones) that’s really done what I want tonally, which is the main reason I no longer bother with them. However, I’m not you. I’d go for the one you’re likely to use more.

I’ve played loads of baseball bat necks and owned a few. The best sounding-basses I’ve ever played/owned have very slim necks. I wouldn’t worry about it.

On Space Ritual he played his first Ric (originally a through-neck 4000), with the Thunderbird neck pickup. Hall of the Mountain Grill was the Ric, and Warrior was an actual Thunderbird. I've seen Phil Lynott with a few Rics, including at least 2 different 4001 basses and a 4000.

Apparently that Jaydee wasn't his. Jaco said in an interview I have from the '80s that he'd had many basses, and he had certainly owned more Jazz basses than the best known 2.

I don't have kids, but have suffered from chronic depression, anxiety and PTSD for many years now. It sucks the joy out of everything you do, but worse, you lose any motivation to do anything, even the things you did enjoy. If I had kids as well, I wouldn't cope at all. So to the OP, if there was anything underlying going on, and you had all the other responsibilities on top of that, you are certainly likely to feel unmotivated.

Speaking as a songwriter, it’s one of my pet hates in other songwriters, being over-wordy. Some “legendary” songwriters suffer badly from it and for me it makes them nigh on unlistenable.

I really don’t like the look of the AJ. The lines don’t flow at all. If I had $20k I wouldn’t be going to Fodera, because I’ve never played one I particularly liked. To be honest, I’d probably spend it on a few different things; another Wal Pro, a vintage Thumb, a ‘60s Ric, another custom Sei. I’d probably still have change. If I was to go with one bass it’d have to be Alembic.

Well you did say double bass, and coming from a jazz background and being the age I am that means a very specific thing to me. 😉 Actually I tend to play differently on different basses because the feel and sonics push me in different directions, so changing instruments certainly works for me. I like to play to the instrument. To be honest, I always found it weird that other people don’t.

Yes, it definitely can make a difference, but it depends on you. In the past I’ve always had a few different basses, and some of them may not have got played live, but I always noodled around on them at home. Now I only have 3 basses of the same type (other than my acoustic bass); however, they pretty much never get played at home, although they’re used at all rehearsals and gigs. I tend to like a different sort of instrument to noodle on, so it does work for me. I’ll add that I suffer from depression (and PTSD) and find that throwing myself into something new, finding a new interest, does help a little.

I boil my strings when I can’t afford new ones, always have. I spent 2 and a half years on the dole and the next 2 on £45 a week; you do what you have to. It works though. You’re obviously not doing it right.
