  1. Anything from very early ‘73 or earlier, although they’re not all the same. My 2 x 72s have very slim necks. Having said that, after ‘73 they went to a very slightly narrower but deeper feel, (the ‘72s feel slightly wider and flatter, which is my preference) until probably the ‘80s. Recent ones have similar proportions to mine, but are slightly bigger. Of course anything from early 70s or even earlier is going to cost. C Series basses should be relatively slim, same with CS or V63 pre about ‘96; after that they get much bigger. The online Rickenbacker Resource forum has a thread about neck sizes. Bear in mind a Ric has a very different neck to something like an Ibanez SR, they’re thicker at the nut but thinner up top.
  2. I tried that when I had one. It just didn’t work for me whatever I did. VT Bass all the way.
  3. One of my favourite ever rock records. Killer. Saw them a couple of times, they were ace. How about these?
  4. I’ll add that my tracks were off the top of my head and influential in my development as a musician, not necessarily as a bass player. I’m really a writer who happens to play bass as his first instrument.
  5. All the ones that aren’t sonic blue, surf green or LPB are wrong. 😉
  6. That’s a shame. It seems to be the only rosewood board with the more sensible & visible black side dots on the maple.
  7. 45 mins for 10 tracks cuts out many of my favourite and most influential tracks, which are up to a side long! Ok, quick stab using 10 shorter tracks: Dancing Queen - ABBA Scarborough Fair - Simon & Garfunkel California Dreaming - Mamas & The Papas Future Love Paradise - Seal Wish You Were - Pink Floyd Parallels - Yes Pyramid Song - Radiohead Vitamin - The Sugarcubes Karate - Babymetal Banks of the Nile - Fotheringay
  8. Same with the HH VS bass combo, a local player had one and used a Ric through it and it sounded amazing. I used to aspire to a VS combo! I started with a JHS 50w guitar combo with built in tremolo, because it was the only thing I could afford after buying my first bass, which was a brand new Ric. This was in 1980 so tail end of 70s gear. Most of the stuff around was HH or Carlsbro, or old valve amps. I traded the JHS for a used Custom Sound 1x15 combo with a graphic and distortion; the speaker part was like an old bass bin, it was a pretty big thing. It sounded pretty immense to be honest. At some point I bought an old Vox 2x15 and added that (blue speakers!). No idea what happened to that. Sold the CSound and bought a Fender Bassman 135 valve head and a brand new Ohm 4x10, which was awful. Sold the Ohm and bought 2 Eezee 1x15s, built buy a local shop; one sounded great and one didn’t! Gigged with our drummer’s Marshall Superbass (which was fab) and HH 2x15, which was pretty good. Then the whole lot bar the EeZees were stolen from the band van. The next amp finally brought me up to date with a very early Trace GP11 AH150, which was great, one of the best amps I’ve ever had. Think I sold the EeZees and bought a very early Trace 4x10, which was brilliant. I did later get another a Marshall Superbass and 4x12. The head was fantastic (the cab wasn’t), but for some reason I sold the head for £150 in the mid/late 90s. Doh! I also had a rare Marshall 2001 375w all valve bass head briefly, but that was terrible. It blew up all the time and sounded pants.
  9. Tech21 VT500 for me, by far. I have two. Have tried the TH, all the GKs, Trace, Ashdown, Markbass, TC, Orange and numerous others and for me it’s not even close. I’m not after clean though, so YMMV.
  10. As in the other thread, can’t you just order one from Fender?
  11. Assuming they still do the NM, can’t you just order one from Fender?
  12. I’d pit the best of the 34” scale Seis I’ve owned/ played against anything I’ve played with fanned frets. My old headless 6 had a fabulous B. In fact I remember Bernie Goodfellow pointedly comparing one of his basses against a Dingwall and there was nothing in it whatsoever.
  13. I’ve had three walnut bodied basses. They were all very light.
  14. I’m kind of indifferent to beans on toast. (I sense another “witch!” moment coming.....😂)
  15. Sadly I live in that detailed analysis. 😂

    SOLD

I take it this is the same one as was on eBay? Beautiful bass! How much in £UK and what’s the weight please?
  17. There are different types of ash. Swamp ash is light. Some are heavy. Some are very heavy.
  18. I had to use Elites in the ‘90s because I struggled to get any other brand local. I hated them!😂
  19. No, it’s not weird, I’ve definitely found some basses like different strings to others. Even my 2 Ricks from the same year, although I normally use Roto steels on them, one really likes Roto nickels when I choose to use them and the other really doesn’t.
  20. I love ‘em. I hate strings that feel smooth.
  21. I have no experience with Dingwalls but IME with Seis and others, wenge definitely seems tighter and more compressed, with more growl (as I perceive it). Depends what you’re after.
  22. I only got one a year ago, as a cast off from my g/f. I hate mobile phones.😂 Although if I’m taking photos of instruments I use a proper camera. Old Skool. 🤘🏻😂
