  1. I would rate BSSM as arguably the best I heard in 1991, so I am.😉
  2. You could throw that at any era and collection of albums though. I wasn’t even vaguely influenced by anything the Velvet Underground, Bowie, Stevie Wonder or Guns n Roses ever did, to pick a few artists at random, but evidently many people were. At the time, the 3 albums mentioned were very big. I don’t think anyone is arguing that they influenced everyone, because that would be ludicrous.
  3. He has one of my favourite tones. The clarity and yet growl he gets are amazing.
  4. This was another of my most influential bass albums:
  5. The video for that used to scare the crap out of me. Hell of a singer though, one of the best IMO.
  6. If that’s the question, BSSM by a nautical mile. Like both the others, but not remotely as much as BSSM. However as others have said, Nevermind unquestionably had the most impact culturally, if not for me personally. BSSM was a game-changer for me at the time I discovered it (RHCPs are amongst my favourite bands, although unlike many others Flea hasn’t really been an influence; I was far more influenced by Leigh Gorman of Bow Wow Wow, who I suspect - particularly based on BSSM - was also a big influence on Flea).
  7. John Diggins once described the neck on my main bass - which is my all-time favourite sounding bass - as “spongy”. I actually think that is one of the things that contributes to the tone, which is far more complex than any other bass I’ve owned. It has an almost acoustic quality.
  8. I bought Sister Sledge “We Are Family” in the very early ‘80s. Plenty of people realised how good Bernard and the boys were at the time.😉
  9. I had one of the first painted Trace 4x10s, which was sealed and only 200w handling. It had bark and mid punch for days. To this day it was the best-sounding cab I’ve ever played through, for my style. If it hadn’t been for my bad back and the weight I’d never have sold it. Leigh Gorman and Mark King used to use the 8x10 version.
  10. If we’re just talking albums with influential bass, rather than bass albums per se, then this was my biggest influence:
  11. I first saw them supporting Rush on the Roll the Bones tour. To be honest I thought they blew a Rush offstage, and I’m a Rush fan.
  12. That IS nice. Good job I don’t get on with a Jazzes, but if I did, that looks like a solid choice.
  13. I bought that when it came out. Some great playing on it. My “solo bass” album was also Stanley. Bought it the same day as Jaco’s first. Expected to prefer Jaco’s, but it was no contest. This remains one of my favourite albums, probably the only “solo bass” album anywhere near.
  14. Well I love the Bee Gees and Heart too....
  15. I also prefer the VT500 to a Walkabout, but I guess it depends what you’re after.
  16. Brilliant band. Never understood the hate. But then I seldom do.
  17. Ditto. Sold my Wal for approx £550 in about ‘96 or ‘97.
  18. I’ve said it before and this is one of the nicest super-Jazzes I’ve ever seen. Are you sure you want to do this? I’m not convinced any of the other basses you’ve mentioned will be better, and I’ve played examples of all of them except the Neuser and the Devon. If you’re unhappy with the sound there are myriad options available for change. One thing I will say, I’ve had the Labellas on some of my Seis and always ended up changing them out; never got on with them. I don’t know if you’ve tried other strings, although I would assume you have. If you do decide to go ahead, best of luck and I hope you find what you’re looking for.
  19. That’s the sort of weight I’d want. No way I can do 10lb basses anymore.
  20. Similar weight to my old MVP4 fretted, which was one of the best basses I've ever owned/played. I px'd it against a Wal Custom which with hindsight I didn't like remotely as much.
