In the hobby of converting war gaming miniatures it is quite common to use the tiny drill and wire method, although those objects never have any torque applied to them. The safest way I recon is to replace the whole pot. If you feel your soldering skills are not up to snuff perhaps there is a skilled electrics enthusiast near you?

Love 412s! Mesa Boogie, Glockenklang, ebs, vanderkley, tecamp and others all make great 412s. Get a neodymium if you can afford.

I have had no trouble with StingRay5, Dean stylist (passsive), MTD kingston 5(passive), or B.C.Rich Beast (dimarzio very hot passive). A USB interface works ok, but you have to have a computer running. The core of my recommendation is don't skimp on the headset. The difference between the sennheiser 201/202 and the hd25-1 is quite large.

A little mixer like the behringer xenyx 502 with a good headphone for bass like a Sennheiser hd25-1. You can use anything in your signal chain. Works a treat for me.
