1.
Bonham the younger is pretty handy.
Might be worth checking out California Breed then. Seeing them next Saturday (supporting Slash).
2. Total Guitar rather liked it when they reviewed it: http://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/mahalo-mlg1-lap-steel-569791 £99 from GAK.
3. Likewise about vouching but: http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/j/johnny_cash/folsom_prison_blues_ver2_btab.htm which seems to match the bass line in the 5* awarded GP6 file here quite well: http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/j/johnny_cash/folsom_prison_blues_ver4_guitar_pro.htm
4. I was going to come to the LBGS this year, purely to try an ACG. Then Alan said he would not be bringing any, so I didn't bother. I don't blame Alan, he is a small business and it doesn't make sense to have stock which you then struggle to clear and in the end I bought a second hand ACG to try (and it is now my No. 1 bass). But the bigger manufacturers have far less of an excuse.
5. The Devin Townsend Project - Z2:Skyblue (Z2:Dark Matters is a bit weird though).
6. After the rather nice EZDrummer deal that Sweetwater did last year (hoping they repeat it this year for EZD2), and with Black Friday just a couple of weeks away, has anyone seen any good potential deals yet?
7. I don't generally like them but I was rather smitten with deksawyer's ACG when he was thinking about selling it. I wasn't sure about 5 stringers at the time, which is why I went for a less risky option of my ACG Graft in the end.
8.
Hi guys I have an eclectic taste from alternative rock QOTSA , foos , incubus to old scool stuff I grew up with joe Jackson , jam, old scool bass funk, Motown etc my question is any ideas for basic bass tunes ? I need new ideas please no smoke on the water ha thanks
QOTSA - Go with the flow is pretty easy. Incubus - I miss you is so easy, you will have more trouble staying awake during it.
9. Rival Sons - Great Western Valkyrie and Band of Skulls - Himalyan
10. Well I had my first ever audition with a band last night (at 40! ) and have spent the last three weeks learning the set. 90% of the set is 4 string only, although I came up with a bassline for one based on the piano score for one song which was Eb, so I used the B for that. In the end I settled on using my 5 stringer because primarily I love its sound. This was the right move for me because I am now really comfortable with the 5 strings (might well offload a 4 stringer now). During the audition I was asked if I could play some notes for a bridge between two songs and when I played them on the 'B' the guitarist far preferred the sound because I think it stood out well in the mix, so hopefully that earned some brownie points. Waiting to hear back now.....
11. This reminded me of a post I saw on Facebook recently, something like this (luckily my girls are old enough to see this as funny): http://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/showthread.php?t=127359
12.
It's great your company take H&S seriously, but numbness in your hands could be for any number of reasons, and a wrist rest will not help if the cause of the numbness has not been diagnosed. For instance if you have ulnar or radial deviation while typing, a wrist rest won't do sh*t. Do you have DSE assessors?
Thanks for the reply. I was advised by OH to return to them straight away if the numbness continued. It didn't and I have had no symptoms since, so I think the rests have solved the issue for me. We have an online DSE assessment (I know, that is the 2 yearly ticking box one) but the OH are actually peoples and they will visit your desk if you have problems.
13. I work for a large company (you can probably guess which one shortly) and everything is Safety Safety Safety (including a charity contribution being based on reduced accident figures) although this is mainly driven by reducing accidents in the dockyards. In my company DSE is a mandated course, which has to be taken every 2 years along with annual check ups by Occupational Health. I use a laptop for work (and being a Systems Engineer, I also spend most of the day writing reports, spreadsheets etc) and have a screen raiser, external keyboard and mouse, keyboard wrist rest and mouse pad with a wrist rest also. If I was dealing with written letters and reports a lot (I don't, it mostly is electronic now), then I would also be provided with a document holder to reduce twisting to swap my view between the screen and the document. Before I had the wrists rests, I mentioned to OH that I occasionally had numbness in my hands at the end of the day. The wrist rests arrived on my desk the next day. This is the way it should be, CTS etc is now considered a workplace injury.
14.
Can anyone explain the difference between fuzz, overdrive, drive and distortion?
http://www2.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Features/en-us/effects-explained-overdrive-di.aspx
15.
At least the basses have escaped the AWFUL Min-Etune which comes as standard on nearly every Gibson guitar model in 2015. Such a poor quality, needless bit of design and you void the ENTIRE warranty if you choose to replace them with standard machine heads. Just crazy.
Just to show two sides to any idea, I love my Min-Etune. Works excellently and is bullet proof so far.
16. No rust, no and I have taken the tuners apart to fit them the other way around (yes, the leftie conversion was a success ).
17. Slash feat Myles K and the Conspirators - World on Fire Not as immediately accessible as Apocalyptic Love IMHO, requires a couple of listens. Exceptional track: Beneath the Savage Sun.
18.
Exeter?......mmmmmmn!
They are on about having one in Totnes shortly too.
19.
I think the next step would be to find a guitar tutor willing to teach him, and discuss it with them.
Might be worth seeing if your local authority has a school music scheme (for example, we have DASP in Dorset). This scheme then arranges for various music tutors to go to local schools and sets an agreed lesson rate per pupil in the session. We have this scheme from Primary School right up to Upper Schools.
20.
Bedrock Music in Burgess Hill. Do you know the area?
No but going to see if they have a website.
21. I think most teachers will teach whatever guitar most encourages the kid to learn. If your kid is rock orientated, then I am sure an electric will be better for that. If they like acoustic artists, then acoustic would probably be the best bet. Both of my girls are more 'rocky', so they have moved over to electric - although the youngest is now thinking about having a new full size (probably parlour) acoustic for Xmas.
22.
My local shop stocks SX - only tried the guitars, not basses, and they are very good for the money - even recommended one to a friend who bought one and has been very happy with it.
Which shop is this, out of interest?
23. Worth noting for us South Westerners that Exeter Library seems to have one of these Fab Labs too: http://fablabdevon.org
