I did a similar thing but with pink gloss undercoat and matt black overcoat and just threw it around for a bit. Granted, it was a rubbish 'Rockwood by Hohner' 3/4 size guitar that I was ripping the frets out of anyway. Its actually a pretty interesting look!!!

Hey guys, I know.... Ashdown!!! I hate them too, but he really likes them and its not like he's got a load of spare cash to blast on a good Ampeg rig (He's a ROAWK bassist). I'll put the idea of eminence neos to him, any more suggestions? Dan

Hey Guys, My mate has an Ashown MAG 300 2x10 and the right speaker had started to fart and clip a little. It was moving much more radically than the left speaker, so we took it out to have a look. All was well except one of the copper braided wires that led between the spade connectors and into the cone had snapped. We didn't know what the wires did, so we tried to repair it with a bit of solder and insulation tape. We put it back together and all was well until we turned it up and the problem re-occurred. I've recommended that he replace the speaker/speakers and maybe upgraded. Does anyone know of places for parts and have any suggestions on what the problem was and replacement speakers? Ta fellas, I know your collective wisdom will help me get to the bottom of this. DaN

Darkstar. Tractor it up in all black!!! Dan

TWICE I've put a new set of strings on and busted the nut, but I've never had it mid-rippage. If you're annoyed now, just don't think of the next seven days without your bass while your luthier fixes it, or longer if you don't have a go-to tech guy. Its poo, but at least its not fallen from a wall hanger onto your multigym, snapping the neck and killing your gran in the process!!!! Dan

My main gigging amp is a BassState B150. Nowt flashy, but its put up with some SERIOUS abuse during my teenage years and I'm still using it on sessions and tours. I love it!!!

Kustom Amps have (and i'm not too sure here) an exclusive distribution in the UK with John Hornby Skewes, who also distribute 'Dunlop' accessories, 'Vintage' guitars and basses and 'Ovation' Acoustics. The guitar shops who use JHS as their sole distribution company tend to be the local guitar shop, targetting the lower end of the market. I think this seems to have seriously effected JHS's brand identity, and Kustom's by proxy. Kustom are signing up quite a lot of the Metal fraternity with their bass amps, but generally I think they're considered a bit too 'lowly' by the type of player with a decent budget. I'm choosing my words carefully here as I have yet to hear or play a Kustom amp, but I'd like to see how they fair against a Markbass, Thunderfunk, Peavey or Ampeg head. DaN PS. I love red wine!!

I work quite a lot with producers and songwriters that know what they want. Its got to the point where I can (most of the time) predict what they are going to ask for and do it before they ask, thereby reinforcing the idea that I'm offering value for my services (a key thing in such a cut-throat world). Inevitably, what I always do is ask myself "Do I need to play this note?" about every single note I want to play. If the answer is 'no' or i'm unsure, I don't play it. I'm hired because I don't detract from what they already have: a song. I offer simplicity and a basic fattening-up of the sound they have. Sure, when I'm playing improvised Drum & Bass I'll rip it up, but in a song situation, I'll play crotchet root unless it's really needed. But yeah, I also know bassists and teachers that hate the fact I play in the first 5 frets most of the time, and they're still good. Dan

WOW!!! I'm a devotee of 4s but this MIDI system has me a little aroused!!! I'm sure its gonna be ACE, and insured against fellow bassists wanting it?? DaN

The eternal stream of bands going nowhere...

+1 on Frodo's advocation of a band leader. I am either the visionary or the follower in my bands. I like directing musicians and I like being directed as a musician, and having a driving force creatively and professionally (until a decent manager turns up) is very important. I don't mind baying to someones ego, as long as they recognise it and the band do. On stage it might look like a equal partnership, but in practise a leader is incredibly important. And i don't join a band that hasn't got: 1. Market potential 2. Decent tunes 3. Musicians who can play That's my thinking anyway Dan -
Andy Rourke of The Smiths. Pay attention and he'll blow your mind!!! Really ornate, confident and suitable. Rourke and Marr are a scarily good duo!! DaN

I play with a live DnB band and we've had a string of gigs where everything goes right. Its so unheard of!!!!!!!! DaN

Its a perspex blank from Allparts, taken to my luthier to cut into shape to fit the darkstar and an unusual body route. There's loads of pickguard blanks out there with all sorts of cool designs. Its a great way to make major, non-permanent aesthetic modifications. DaN

I've been after an ASAT since I was about 17, but the price tag has always been a bit scary (I love doing up cheap things). If you ever want to trade for some used chewing gum, give me a shout!!! DaN
lookin sharp dAn what DHA stuff did you want to have a whirl on?
Hey dAn I'd love to hear the comp and maybe one of those overdrivey gizmos, but since I'm now based in Wigan (Aaaaaargh, get me out of here!!!!) players with gear are a bit thin on the ground!! I still reckon my P is more precise than yours!!! DaN

Hey Si, It's a complete rip-off!! Allparts body, mightymite neck (I think), no-name hardware; it came with the decal but it's not lacquered so when I can be bothered, I'l replace it with something custom. The bass was about £200 from the old bassworld and all the mods cost about the same, but it plays amazingly and sounds like the Dog's proverbials!! The fact it's cheapo raises it's 'boast-ability' for me. I generally use cheaper instruments but customised up to buggery and set-up by myself and my luthier regularly. And Steve: Ta mate!! My guitarist/band leader/best mate has moved back to LA, but the plan is that I'll move there when he's got some more support for the band. I'm gutted he's gone, but c'est la vie!!! Dan

Thanks Paul. That record was done with Jon Withnall at Parr St studios, and was a great laugh. The producer was ace, the engineer was ace, and the band leader is/was my best mate!!! All the kit and bass was done together in a very large, beautiful, wooden room... I could wax lyrical about how it was easily in the top three sessions I have done (and I've had some real fun sessions!!!) Dan

Hey Ped, I usually go for 'fliptop' or 'motor city', and just phaff. I'd love some DHA stuff for bite and compression, but for now I'll just play with the knobs 'til it sounds somewhere near good. When playing live, I rarely use the POD (although that'll change for my new project) as the DS-P sounds the bizzle what ever I'm using!!! Toasted: Yeah!! Wow!! Dan

My DarkStar'd Precision in the Bass Porn forum. Everything I could ever want!!!! It's odd too, that it's not that expensive either, but I suppose that's all part of the thrill of it!!! Dan

You can hear the bass at www.myspace.com/frameworkmusic and check out 'Hot Legs'. I may give recording some samples a go later today but my strings are very 'one-trick pony' at the mo (dead rounds). To me, this is the vintage precision sound. It honestly makes no sense to me having a precision without a darkstar!!!! Dan

Well guys, this baby's been in action for nearly a year but I never felt I had pics that did her justice. I had a session in Rockfield Studios, Wales, and the MD hired a photographer. She took these: And here's one of my early attempts: The parts bass was bought on the old Bassworld, but I've added the ashtray, DarkStar and the absolutely Pimpin Paisley pickguard. This is always how I imagined I'd sound. Many times I have nearly bought a bass, only to spend an hour at a good volume with my trusty old Bass POD and kept my money!!! Its great when an instrument gets you work, too!!! Dan

Anyone buy any good gear this weekend?
