Don't like funk? Nah, you just need a better definition of it or something. Jamerson was the original funkster and everybody copied the spirit of his lines, they still do....it's not infallible, but the funk reaches the parts other genres can't reach. Hope you get back on board, in the meantime I have to prescribe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mC-sbplJZ9E - Sweet Charles Sherrell or: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njU3TYBuGHQ - Bootsy Collins or: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fllTMtl6dxs - Will Lee or: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZbRXyeRr_I...feature=related - Verdine White
Same attitude I was talking about in my original post.

Geddy, the guy from The Stranglers (Jet Black?) sung didn't he, Claypool.

I'm just talking from observation about Dave Holland, but I've talked to a few pro double bassists about the low action technical aspects that have developed for upright bass, I'm pretty much repeating what I was told word for word so I'm not really getting into an argument on their behalf over this, agree with it or don't, my opinion is set. Also read back to my first post and appreciate that I'm not knocking the abilities of the players in any way, just pointing out that its possible to do things these days that wasn't int he past.
-
Just going by what I see on that video, any good bassist will be able to play on basses of any action but some of the the highly technical stuff is certainly only possible on a bass with low action. I'd like to see Stanley Clarke do any of his double bass heroics on a bass with a regular setup.
-
Thats amazing regardless, but his bass looks like its set up for amplified playing only with a very nice action, I doubt you could pull that off on an upright set up for playing acoustically. Its the same with Renaud Garcia-Fons and Edgar Meyer, all 3 are completely mindblowing musicians but they probably have easier setups on their bass then most electric fretlesses heh.
-
Pretty good, if only he played some proper music. (kidding) I bet hes better than that without the camera too, you can see hes got a mild case of red light syndrome, its more obvious in his video playing wootens 'more love'.

See if you can pick up an Alesis SR16 on ebay, shouldn't set you back more than £50 and its probably the best drum machine ever built. I did the same thing and it was one of the single biggest points of improvement in my playing.

Arrangements of popular songs. For pub stuff I'd stay away from effects and looping, too. I used to play some tapping arrangements of Beatles songs I made and they went down really well, had people singing along, coming up to me afterwards telling me they'd never seen anything like it (not the most up to date crowd heh) etc. Its a great way to get into solo technique and composing and pretty much the only way to get any real appreciation as a solo bass artist at most open mic nights imo is to play something that people recognize in a new way. After you win the crowd over then move on to new grounds.

Ah heh ok, I don't think they're really that bad , a little unorthodox but cool all the same, the fire one specifically reminds me a LOT of Philip Glass and the bass tone on it is just great.
-
Is it a 'solo bass' CD or just a CD using the name of the bass player?
-
Yeah I like those ideas, part of the judging criteria is going to be how closely it relates to the image so all info given by the composer to show how they made that link is going to give them a better chance, I'll post their descriptions in the voting threads with their entries. I don't really want to start too many threads about this, already been 3, I'm ok just combing through this thread to find all the entries, I'll definitely start a new one for the voting/feedback though.
as different as fire and ...... water. from my old solo bass cd's "When Dreamland Burned" "St. Barts Blues" tracks 5 & 6 on the link below, burning and soothing lyrics posted on the blog.
Thanks, listening to the fire one atm, I know it wasn't specifically for this pic but I think it fits the image quite well. Could you post the entry in the comp thread? It'd be tricky to keep track of a bunch of individual threads.

My concept of earth is a state of fragile serenity, its completely calm but threatening to explode with irresistible power at any time.

My main complaint is that all the best songs are available to listen on myspace for free, most having been there for a looong time already. The rest of the stuff on the album is good but a lot more forgettable than those few.
Just to check, we are allowed to use other musicians to do the non-bass parts, right? Anddd is it okaeey if we want to make more than one entry? I doubt I'll want to enter loads (probably one for Earth and one for Fire)
Theres no way of stopping anyone having someone else recording non bass parts so its allowed, I don't want to go down the route of everyone just uploading a track their band recorded one time though so I'd say to try and keep the music as a piece as personal and/or relevant to the theme as possible. You're welcome to submit as many entries as you want, depending on how many total entries there are it'll be judged either piece by piece or user by user (if its user by user I'd recommend picking your best piece and labeling that as so otherwise people might just listen to a lesser piece and vote based on that though). If you go to the effort of making two pieces though I think you've earned the competitive advantage that buys you and I'll definitely listen to them all at least.

Anyone interrested in a basschat bass competition?
the deductive reasoning is from number of views/plays - if they don't listen in the first place it's a lack of interest. if you get the plays but no (or negative) comments, you might assume there is interest but no one likes it.
Yeah, I always found the main problem to be that everyone just listened to small fragments and/or voted for their friends, thats why I'm enforcing the 'all entrants must give feedback' rule, I'm also considering collecting votes from posts too rather than using the voting function of the forums. -
Been listening to it all day, its pretty sweet, 'Be Water, My Friend' is my favourate so far.

I'm planning to do a piece based on earth in a week or so, that one for me has the most characteristics that can be translated to music.

Maybe hes a good player but I can't stand his smooth jazz/pitch corrected singer/cliche bass tone style of music.

Posted a test run comp, keeping the rules pretty relaxed for this one. URL= http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry199638 -
